Some information to share - Someone asked me WHY is there so much cancer and what is ACS doing? - I WAS an RN in the field of cardiac nursing from 1961-1981 and saw a lot of improvements there due to scientific advancement AND the education put forth by our American Heart Association. Cardiac nursing was no longer a challenge, so I studied Oncology Nursing in depth from 1981-1982 and moved to that field until I retired in 2001.
Heart disease and strokes are STILL a little above cancer deaths and responsible for 40% of all deaths in the U.S. The the age-adjusted death rates from cardiovascular disease (CVD) have declined 60%, representing one of the most important public health achievements of the 20th century. That leaves more people who are living longer to get cancers.
NOW our American Cancer Society is doing what the Heart Assn did in prevention of cancers and extension and improvement of lives. The death rates are going down a little over 1% a year for the past 20 years, although the incidence is going up for many cancers because of longer lifespans and better diagnosis. If we count the non-invasive skin and cervical cancers, one in two men and one in three women will get some form of cancer in their lifetime.
THAT is why I am trying to help our ACS do in the 21st century what our Heart Association did in the 20th century. I DO see many results. We have better survival for many cancers than we did when I first became an oncology nurse. My first husband (died of malignant melanoma in 1974 at age 39 and my Dad (died of colon cancer in 1975 at age 73). Both would still be alive if diagnosed and treated with today's methods, some of which were developed with ACS research funds.
I HOPE this answers some of your questions also and encourages some of you to donate something for coupons when you need them. I can also send you personalized address labels or RS slips to send with your coupons and many other items that are donated to me. Just ask. While you help our A.C.S. prevent and cure cancers when you get coupons, You are protecting yourself and family and future family members from a horrible disease. I cannot do it without help from others.

My sister-in-law has worked with brain cancer for many years. I have a friend that works with children's cancer. I have lost many loved ones to all kinds of cancer. I have also had friends beat cancer. There are so many people behind the scenes that are helping everyday. What works for one will not work for another. It is wonderful your spreading the news. I do not sell coupons - I get them donated - EACH insert by an individual neighbor where I live, then in the mail from others who want to help. Just got envelopes from NY, NJ, MA, TX. and Colo. I send to people in return for their donation to our American Cancer Society. I set up a team in Relay for Life where the monies go to recieve the donations. Some people send their donations directly there each week. Most send to me in Paypal gift, concealed cash or a check payable to our A.C.S.; and I move it there each month.
