I put them in the ground and very tall healthy plants about a foot tall, it has been very cold. Is it safe to cut them back. If I cut them back how much do I leave at ground level?
Thank you for information and any help, I thought plants died when it got cold and you were to cut them back.

she told me to transplant in July that said if it was me I'd go ahead and put them in the ground in a extra deep hole then next spring take rake most of the dirt from them they need to be almost on top of the ground or they won't bloom. I put some leaves over them and around them. Hope this is ok. I did not cut them back. I left them alone.

I live in a northern climate. We always cut them back in fall Oct/Nov.
We cut them all the way down to the ground. Our experience is that
they are very hardy plants and multiple rather easily. We don't even
bother covering them, although some leaves from the tree next to them
may cover them up a bit.
