As you may know, I lost both of my dogs in recently. I want to rescue a dog from a shelter, but am waiting til May when my son is home from college. Anyway, my plan is to go to a shelter and get an adult dog, preferably a large one, hopefully at least partially trained.

But I was wondering, should I go to a no kill shelter and adopt a dog, or should I go to one and try to get a dog that is in danger of being put down because it was there too long? Not sure which way to go. I know the hard part is going to be only bringing home one or two dogs (I am thinking two, since I've had two dogs all my married life).) But my husband pointed out that the reason is as soon as we got a dog, within months somebody gave us another one, so he thinks I should just get one and see who gives us another one. But I know how hard it will be to leave any dog at the shelter, so I bet I'm coming home with two.

Anyway, what do you all think? I know a lot of you help out at various shelters, and wondered which would do the most good or give me the best chance at a great family dog.

is a pup I was fostering for our Humane society and we loved him so we kept him ( foster fail lol) the advantage to doing it this way is that they both came spayed/neutered and the one from the humane society is chipped One was $150 and the one was $100 Our local shelter here is a kill shelter BUT they work with the humane society and have a very low kill rate
If you are willing to pay for all the vetting, spay or neuter yourself them by all means go to a kill shelter but make sure if you take two that you let them spend some time together in a room at the shelter or a fenced in area to make sure they get along Also make note if you have cats most shelter dogs have not been cat tested Which ever way you go rescue is the best they know you saved them Good luck

If you're willing to adopt two dogs at once, you might ask the shelters if they have any bonded dogs they're trying to adopt. Sometimes dogs will come in to a shelter that have lived together and the shelter will try their best to adopt them out together. That's oftentimes very hard for them to do.

Just an idea you might want to consider.

Good luck! Adopting a dog is a wonderful thing to do!!

I would have never thought of that.

Also, I got mine from the Humane Society and he was partially trained.

6|2|A no kill shelter OR adopt a dog -- either one is great Sue. The pet that you do get will be FOREVER GRATEFUL and give you "Unconditional Love"!! |cashcoll|cashcoll@yahoo.com|14:50:55|02/07/2014|

7|1|I saw a report that black dogs are less likely to be adopted than dogs of other colors. It is a shame that|lv2qpon|jcummins1@rochester.rr.com|15:42:46|02/07/2014|

prejudice exists in the dog world too. I would adopt a dog from a place that puts dogs down. A no kill shelter would be less likely to do that. A dog in that place would have a chance of being kept. But it all comes down to the dogs that speak to your heart. 8|2|I know, I love black dogs|dragonmom|sueedelmann@yahoo.com|17:19:06|02/07/2014|

Used to have 2 big black dogs when I first got married, a collie/shepherd mix and a black lab. Both wonderful dogs. I think I will do to regular shelter, since the no kill ones will hopefully eventually find their dogs a home, while a kill shelter may end up putting one down. There are so many shelters in the area so full of dogs. I really want to go right away, but know it will be best to wait til my son is home so he and the dog will bond.

T 10|2|Our shelters here are no kill, and i'v always got my cats & dogs from them for the most part; our last yellow lab came from a neighbor who just worked so much & the dog was home alone so we started what we call"rent a dog, rent a freind" during the week but finally adopted her; she is such a sweet girl..|loopylops|zachsarah25@gmail.com|11:05:35|02/09/2014|
