I would appreciate any help on this subject. My childhood friend lives in Va and was just diagnosed with lung cancer. Really has no family to help her. I am pretty much the only one she can count on. Problem is I live in New York and no able to help her with getting her to medical appointments. I am concerned that she will be alone and I will have no way to check up on her. Are there any services for cancer patients with limited income that would cover, transportation to medical appointments, home health care, maybe over night lodging near a hospital. She basically lives in the sticks and does not drive so all these things are a concern Maybe down the road if she needs help with getting food etc. Thank you for any suggestions

I have an older family member that gets a certain amount of money a month paid out to someone to, get her to appointments, run errands for her, or anything that needs done around the house that she can not do.

Sorry for your friend, praying you are able to figure out ways to help her.

I believe they do help with transportation costs as well as other things she might need. And they should know what is available in her area. Kindly, Vanessa 3|1|local nursing agency should help|cinda68|null@yahoo.com|03:05:11|01/31/2014|

Hopefully there is a local home nursing agency in the area or a senior citizens help center may help too. I know they do here with rides to appointments, housework, shopping or whatever the patient may need. Funds were cut for these things here so that may be the case in other areas too. 4|1|The americian cancer society is great!!!! hosparus too|kawanti|kawanti@twc.com|07:54:56|02/01/2014|

In the Northern VA area, most counties have a cab coupon booklet. She buys these for like $10 and gets 10 coupons good for a $10 fare, Check with her county senior office.

Also tell her to get some fresh ginger from an Asian store(much cheaper there). Make a cocktail with about an inch square of the root in about 4 cups of water. She can flavor it any way she wanns. Refrigerate and sip on it. It was ease the nausea cause by chemo treatments. Doctors are recommending this. Have 2 friends on chemo, no nausea whatsoever. 6|3|she is in Goochland County. Is that cab book even if your not a senior citizan?|spilleliz|saving4spending@gmail.com|07:18:45|02/03/2014|

the policy there. But she can check. It may be available to lower income familys. 8|1|The hospital or oncology dept. should have a social worker to help in situations like this. (m)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|22:20:54|02/04/2014|

One of my aunts passed away last year of lung cancer. She didn't have anyone that could help her get to dr. or chemo treatments after the diagnosis & her income was limited. It was either the hospital or the oncology dept. that hooked her up w/a social worker who knew how to get it arranged so that my aunt had transportation to/from all her appts./chemo treatments, & so someone would check in on her & help her w/groceries or whatever she needed at home as well. This was BEFORE hospice came in that last month. And if I remember correctly, there was also an area of the hospital where my aunt could stay overnight if she didn't want to go back home that night, kind of like a motel room for patients.

She has no computer so can not do alot on her own I am trying to find as much free help for her as I can 10|1|Here is a list of some information for you for your friend. You can look these over and see what would help your friend. Then, maybe you could get information for her or fill out online forms for her since she has no internet.
Social workers at her hospital should also be able to match her up with what help is needed. Also, remember, so many people need help that sometimes you have to be the polite
squeaky wheel to get results :)

P.S. You're a good friend.

I always tell everyone to start at Benefit.gov
There may be help available that you may not know about.
