My financial situation sucks right now and I don't know what to do. We still have another 10 days to see if my husbands job is going to appeal his workmans comp claim. In the mean time I am getting shut off notices for my utilites and I have tried the Salvation army and one other place but the Salvation Army has a 3 week waiting period before getting an appointment and my electric is due to be shut off on 9/28. I haven't paid my gas budget in 3 months so I am sure I will get the shut off for that. I don't want to apply for food stamps because the last time I had to it took 5 weeks to be approved. By that time we will hopefully be getting workmans comp checks and won't need them because we will make to much money. Between now and then I am the only income and I can't keep everyone happy. I sold over $3000 worth of jewerly for $700 to keep them from shutting off the electric last month. The one food bank I found in my city you can only go there once a month. Do you guys no of any other places I can call for help with the utilities and food? You don't have to be affiliated to receive help from them. But on that subject, do you have a church that you are affiliated with? Churches are usually good to help anyone in their time of need or the Ministers/Priests at least know who to put you in touch with to receive help. Some have Food Banks/Pantries as well.
I'm kind of surprised w/the Salvation Army in your area as most usually have emergency funds along w/food or food vouchers to help in situations like yours where there is no waiting period. I mean, they can't expect someone to wait 3 wks. to eat!

Maybe they know where you can try & get help w/your bill. They usually have a list of places to help people w/their bill since they want their money & don't care how it gets paid. If not, ask them if they'll work w/you & except a smaller payment for now.
Also, do you have Energy Assistance in your area? They usually have emergency funding throughout the year so not just during the winter months. Or a Community Action type program? CAP is there to help people who can't afford to pay their rent/mortgage & utility bills due to illness, job loss, etc. They also have a weatherization program (insulation, sealing doors/windows, etc.) & emergency services to help w/heating repairs/assistance in winter & cooling/air conditioning in hot summer months.

... you never know what one does what till you ask. One church here, does a bi-weekly "Angel Food" and another one offers all kinds of bread items every Saturday morning. See if there are any neighborhood community centers around - just not in your neighborhood.
We have a GodsPantry here that not is it only a food bank, but they do the Thanksgiving and Xmas food baskets.
Our local newspaper posts people in need of help with utilities on Wednesday - call your local paper and just ask.
Maybe call the Fire Department and see what they offer for assistance. I know ours sponsors a lot here locally:
school supply drives, food drives, toys for tots, etc.
I'm sure other towns have programs similar to what we have - it's just a matter of finding them.

he is a shuttle driver for Ford and he was cranking up and down a dolly and it got stuck and somehow he injured something in his left shoulder. He is going to go tomorrow for a cordizone shot and then they are scheduling an MRI as the x-ray did not show anything. I have paid out over $98 for scripts for him and I guess I have to wait until the 28th to get reimbursed for those. If his work appeals it we are screwed. There is no way I can go without his pay for any longer. I have sold all I can think of to sell just to keep from stuff being shut off and to keep gas in the car. Nothing pains me more than to hear my daughter say she is still hungry an hour after she eats dinner. I try to make meals out of the food we got but it is hard and then to stretch it between 3 people. If it does get appealed then I will be going to apply for food stamps. I called a few places yesturday but couldn't find anyone to help with the utilities. I am sure before he does start getting checks I will be having stuff shut off. Check in your phone book for HRDC, Human Resource Development COuncil. LIEAP (low income energy assistance)should be coming out very soon if not already. This can help heat you home in the winter. Your OPA, Office of Public Assistance should have emergency food stamps (now SNAP) appointments available. You mentioned a child (school age??)- have you applied for free/reduced lunch? If you have under the old income when hubby was working, then ask to redo the form under your current 1 income. Churches will usually help with food, but every now and then if you get the right person on the phone and explain what is happening, some may help with your utilities. One suggestion is to look in your phone book for a community mental health agency in your area of some sorte and ask to speak to one of their Case Managers. They are a wealth of knowledge because they should know all of your community agencies on where to get help. Sometimes there are little charities out their (here we have Chase Hawks, in your area you may have something that the Case Manager knows about) and they are very helpful when other agencies are not able to help. thank you guys so much for what you did it means the world to me and I can't say how much I appreciate it. I just got home from work a little while ago or I would have posted sooner. I came up with enough money from my check and some computer work my husband did to pay the amount on the electric bill they needed. I swear I sold jewerly 2 weeks ago and paid them the previous months bill and 2 weeks later I get another bill with a shut off notice for Oct. 1st. It's a never ending cycle. I haven't got my gas bill yet. The water I am only behind one month and they let you go 3 months before they send a shut off notice. Cable is due at the end of the month and then I will be 2 months behind in that. House payment is not paid for this month but that is $1000 so I don't even think about that. My husband goes for his cortizone shot in the morning and hopefully gets his appointment for the MRI. I just hope they can give him a script that comes in generic because I can't afford to pay more than a few bucks for that. I will see if they have samples he can get. The last script for pain meds cost $28 and I can't run it through my insurance because then I can't get reimbursed through workmans comp. My daughters birthday is Saturday and I feel so bad that I can't get her a cake or any gifts right now. I was explaining to her last night and crying the whole time but she said she understands and its okay but it just makes me feel like crap that I can't do anything for her right now. She's going to be 12 and is so grown up. The food bank down the street I went to last week said you can only go there once a month. I haven't had much time to research other options because I work either 12-7 or 1-9 most days and just want to go to bed when I get home. I was hoping it would show up today as I don't go into work until 3:15 and I could go to the grocery store and pay some more on the electric. I haven't bought a newspaper in the last 3 or 4 weeks because I didn't want to spend the money on it. Alot of the ones I had were expired but I did manage to save a few bucks with what I had. Thanks to you guys I was able to get some food needed toilet paper also the one thing I didn't have stock piles of, filled my car up and, paid a little more on my electric and kept a few bucks to do me until I get paid again on the 4th. When I get my water bill it will be double again but should not be due until the 15th of next month. When I get the gas it will be almost 3 months behind. I have never got a shut off for it before because it is on the budget and was never hard to pay. So I am guessing it will come with a shut off notice. My cable/internet will be double when I get it and will have a disconnect notice but I should have until the 21st of Oct. to pay that. Hopefully we will be getting workmans comp checks way before that. When I get paid on the 4th I think maybe I will have enough to pay the car insurance and the past due part of the gas bill and fill put gas in the car again. As long as there is no appeal we should be getting the first check soon after that I hope. I owe this months house payment so with the first check it will be back pay from 9/3 so will have to pay that out of that check. As long as everything works out in our favor then we will slowly bounce back. It may take a month or so of getting caught up though. as far as spending money on gas to go to other foodbanks, they are to far away and some of them you have to live in that city or county. I might as well use the money for the gas on food. I have no 401k at work. We are waiting on a call back from the lawyer. The appeal could take up to 45 days to get a hearing so we are hoping the lawyer gets it a lot faster. And who knows there can be more than one appeal. I tried the 211 site and called them but have not heard back from them I got a recording. The salvation army you have to get an appointment with a shut off notice and since I just paid on the electric I won't get one for another few weeks. Have not got the gas bill yet and the salvation army doesn't have any funds left for that. The other place that takes the apps for the gas bill doesn't start yet. I have to find out what I need to take to welfare to apply for food stamps because I don't want to have to make 4 or 5 trips there since they are 15-20 minutes away from my house. I would rather try to take them everything on the first visit. We have enough food now that we can stretch it out for a couple of weeks just not alot of meat. In the mean time I will be two months behind in the house payment and will only be able to pay what I can on each bill. I have house, gas, water, electric, car insurance, cable/internet, phone plus gas in the car, food and two dogs to care for on just my income until he starts getting checks. And yes I realize that I am going to be in the same situation come next month but there is not much I can do. And if I do get help with the utilities don't they only pay the current bill for you? And if so I will still be in the same situation within a month or two if this drags out. We are a family that lives paycheck to paycheck with very little for extras unless we save up for it. I know you're overwhelmed, but unfortunately there is no quick fix. As Barb stated, the RS help was a bandaid.
File for benefits online and save the gas. I have done this numerous times for many, many people. It is by far the most effective, quickest and easiest method and you don't have to deal with any attitude from the workers.
Call the utilities, explain, and make a payment arrangement plan. Pay what you can. Call your mortgage company and see if you can put a payment to the end of the loan. Many will do this as a one time thing.
Call your churches and such when your food is running low. You may have to call ten of them until you find one that can help, but there is usually the one that will.
Along with the free lunch program for your daughter, she should also qualify for the free breakfast as well.
Be proactive, be creative, be frugal. Look for freecycle or like companies. I have seen numerous in my area that donate food. I have also seen people posting saying they need food and it is recieved.
Join a few rewards programs. Some ones that pay out quickly are Swagbucks, Irazoo and Gifthulk. There are boards and facebook pages to help you find points. I make $51 a month just by running videos on my cellphone on Swagbucks.
I am currently making close to $200 from these programs. Yes, it takes time during the day, but I don't have to leave home and I get paid.
This won't be forever and you have to take one day at a time.
Always remember as bad as you have it right now, there are many others with worse problems.

Most of the time the foodstamp office will want 3 consecutive months worth of bank statements, and paystubs or any other papers that show you have assets (stocks bonds etc). You don't rent so will not have to show a rental agreement, but you may have to provide mortgage statement.
As a side mote, check with your work for an EAP (Employee Assistance Plan). This usually gives you access to free therapy (6-9 sessions depending) for yourself and or family members. You may need emotional support, but the therapist may also be able to refer you to places that have yet to be discovered.
This is a shot in the dark but when you are talking to the utilities companies about shut off notices do mention that your husband is disabled due to a work related issue. Here in my state it is law that if someone is elderly or disabled in a household the main source of heating cannot be turned off during the winter, plain and simple. You may have to provide a letter form your physician for documention but it is worth asking about. Not sure about your area.

I did not realize you can do that online. Emergency ones can take between 24 hrs. to 7 days which I hope we qualify for or else can take up to 30 days. Need insurance on both vehicles as we drive both of them, myself to work and hubby for when he has to go to his appointments. Cable/phone/internet is as low as I can get it and need these 3 to stay in touch with the lawyer, BWC and to make any extra money I can online. I can only do with what I have and what I can get so until things change I will just have to keep trying to sell stuff for extra money and save every penny I get. Since I am disabled and usually just need to go to the store or drs appointments we descided to cut back, it has save us alot on Insurance and on gas. If he doesn't use the car that much you might want to consider that.

he is a shuttle driver for them but through another company. He is not a vet, only 49. No help from work as they know the situation and there are only 9 of us there. Heading to welfare this morning to see about food stamps hopefully that will go through fast and I won't have to worry about that. A few years ago when he got laid off we got food stamps. We had a income of $1,500 a month and they gave us $115 a month for a family of three. My house payment is $1,068 plus at the time I had a car payment that was almost $400 so I don't know how they figure stuff but that wasn't enough for a week let alone a month. This time we will have less than halve of that as income so I hope we receive more. I am tired of thinking about it. I can only do what I can do so if stuff gets shut off it gets shut off. I can't make any more than I do. My manager actually has been giving me 3 or 4 more hours a week for the past month but with insurance and taxes coming out I don't bring home much. There is a halloween shop opening up in the same shopping plaza where I now work so I am stopping there today before I do to work to see if they are taking apps.
