Well, tomorrow will be 11 months and 2 days since the accident and RODNEY IS COMING HOME!!! Thanks so much for all the prayers ... that is absolutely what got Rodney through this. The morning of April 24th 2013 was a cold morning in Kansas City and a patch of black ice changed our life forever. Rodney sustained 3rd & 4th degree burns to 65% TBSA (total burn surface area), had seven fractured ribs, acute respiratory failure and a huge gash on the back of his head that wasn't even noticed for a couple of days because the burn and breathing were what they were focusing on. He had both legs amputated above the knee from the burns and he has suffered many MANY very serious and life threatening infections since then. Rodney never lost consciousness through the entire accident and was awake and aware when the firemen got on scene. I was working as a Deputy in Clinton County, MO, and was on duty when it happened. The wreck was in Clay County and when I first heard radio traffic a small thought flitted through my mind that the location was about where Rodney would be in his morning commute to work but it couldn't be Rodney ... More and more radio traffic made me think I would go and see what I could find out. I called Ronette, the dispatcher on duty, and asked her if she could find anything out even though I knew she wouldn't be able to yet. When there's a bad wreck like that first responders are more concerned with getting the people to safety than they are in running plate information. We turned the TV on though and the wreck was on every channel. The first shot I saw was the front of a gray truck and I thought, "whew, that's not Rodney ... our truck is white". Then I saw another shot of the truck ... what I thought was a gray truck was just the burned part of the truck. The back view that I was seeing now was a white truck. But I still didn't get too upset ... what in the world were the chances that this could be Rodney?!?! But I had started sending him several texts just to check on him ... several UNANSWERED texts! When I found out it was him I headed right to the hospital ... the longest trip of my life. When I walked in the hospital I was still in uniform and the staff knew that I was coming from work and would be in my CCSD uniform. Walking down the hall, one of the nurses saw me and started crying. I thought I was going to pass out for the first time in my life! And, the odd thought that went through my head was, "my duty weapon is on my right side, if I pass out I need to try to fall on my left so my gun doesn't hit this floor". I didn't pass out, though, and the nurse immediately told me that he was alive but that she had worked in the burn unit for 10 years and he had the worse burns she had ever seen! Not very comforting :(
Though this whole year though, Rodney has kept such a positive attitude. Never complaining of pain and not once saying out loud any version of "poor me"! Prayers have absolutely pulled him through and will bring him home tomorrow!
