When I ring out at the store I am in the habit of putting my coupons on that tiny shelf and leaving them there until I get all the stuff out of the cart. I use an envelope to keep them in until I ring out and have them sitting on top of my envelope. I just happened to have grabbed a doctor's office envelope to use this last time and of course it had my name and address on it. Kinda personal so I felt more than a little violated when the cashier just grabbed my coupons and envelope before even ringing up my items.

This has happened to me more than once, felt like someone rifling through my purse. I only sit them there so I can have my hands free to get my items out of the cart, it is my personal property and I really hate when they grab my stack of coupons.

How do I handle this? I mean, what is a nice way to say, please don't touch my coupons and envelope? What do you all do? 1|1|Sit your coupons on top of your purse in the cart|jdlaurie|savethosepennies@aol.com|18:33:48|11/05/2012|

They always grab them if I lay them on the counter as well... so to avoid that lay them in your purse... they won't go into you purse. 2|2|Having cashiered....we are taught to look thru the coupons |BusterBrown|srfreezerqueen@hotmail.com|19:10:23|11/05/2012|

for dates, frees, bogos etc....so I personally start to do it while the person is unloading..my thought is once it is put up there I look at it the person has turned it over to me....If the person does not want me to have em they should hold on to them....I take the coupons...hand back paperclips, lists, envies without paying attention to them....It helps keep the line moving, and makes my job easier.... 4|3|I see what you mean|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|21:15:02|11/05/2012|

I'm sure the cashiers have to check for dates, frees, etc and they usually do but most wait until after I give them the coupons. I do put the frees first on the belt and hand those over at the beginning so we don't have to go back and check prices, etc. I take a long time to check out and try to make it as fast as I can for everyone, I can't lift with my left arm at all so it takes me longer. I don't like being rushed because I need to watch things ring up to make sure the price is correct, especially with clearance items...sometimes they ring up as full price.

Sometimes the cashiers ask if they can take the coupons I put there, they are kind about it but once in a great while I get one who is really nasty about it and grabs them in a huff.

I didn't know that cashiers thought it was ok to take things from that shelf, sometimes I put money and my cards up there too, won't do that anymore. My fault then, I will just try to keep it all in my purse/coupon box until I am ready to pay, except for frees, rainchecks and bogos. Thank you for the info! 3|2|yes, good idea|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|21:05:19|11/05/2012|

I think I will leave them in my purse from now on. Just in the habit of putting them on that tiny shelf. I usually do that first to show them the free ones I might have or a raincheck, etc. 5|3|JODIE IS RIGHT, I GIVE MY COUPONS TO THE CASHER FIRST AND THEY CHECK THEM WHILE I'M UNLOADING...|JOYHAPPYONE|DAIDOLA5@AOL.COM|21:35:13|11/05/2012|

I like to unload my cart and give them the coupons, my point is that they are just taking them without asking. Not all of them do, just some. 7|1|I've never felt...|inthesticks|jbsimon@ymail.com|10:22:44|11/09/2012|

disturbed that the cashiers will take my personal stuff off the little checkout shelf while I'm unloading my cart. Then again, I'm a guy, so I don't usually have anything with me other than coupons and perhaps a store ad circular. Once I begin checking out, I hand over my car keys (which has my store card on it) to the cashier, who swipes it and hands the keys back to me. I then hand over my coupons to the cashier. He or she will finish ringing my items up, then begin going through the coupons. I don't need to pay too much attention to the items being rung up because once I get the groceries to my truck, I then look at the store receipt for any discrepancies, and to ensure that store items were scanned correctly. I do this before ever leaving the parking lot. I can always return to the cashier to correct any problems I might find.
I don't think that cashiers would ever swipe any personal items off the little shelf or off the conveyer belt (besides coupons). That goes for male or female cashiers. Any cashier who would take personal items (except for the coupons to be used there) from a customer without the customer's express approval is a thief, in my book, and shouldn't be working there anyway. 8|2|I give them first too|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|12:16:34|11/09/2012|

My point is that I give them over, I don't appreciate them being just taken from the shelf. I always give the frees, bogos, rainchecks first because it helps to run the line faster and then I put the rest of them on that shelf. I don't mind giving them the coupons at first, all of them but I do mind them just taking them without even asking.

And I can't afford price mistakes, don't have enough money to do that, it has to be right. Which is why I need to watch the items being rung up so I can catch them before it is time to pay. 9|3|I give them in the beginning but watch as they ring in at the end to make sure they all go in.|glennie58|glenn_scott@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu|22:30:59|11/16/2012|
