I live in NY and my Dad lives in NJ. Is it practical for me to be his guardian when there are other family members in NJ? How often do you have to go to court and where would this court be? (Which state) Can a NY lawyer take care of this issue? Is anyone a guardian out there and how much work is involved doing this job. On one site it mentioned filing out a form once a year. Is this correct? Hope someone can just shed some light to help me. I did email 3 lawyers twice. One finally emailed back that they would get back to me on Monday. Let's see if they get back to me.

Yes, you would fill out paper work once a year and send it to the courts w/a fee.. When you go to court make sure you ask for guardian of the person and property. Guardianship should be done by the person who has his best interest at heart..... Hope that helps a little...

Call the court where you would be filing the papers. I have guardianship of my niece (and have for 14 years). We did all the filing's with the court ourselves for about $250. We are sent a yearly recertification that we mail back in (no fees) and they let us know if we need to appear in court or if we are good until next years filing. You only have to go in if you are having problems, been arrested, want to give up guardianship etc..

However since you don't live in the same state I don't think you can get Guardianship. If you are talking Conservatorship (control of monies, medical, residency etc..) that is different.
