I have been feeling terrible this week...like I was beat up and kicked in the gut! Slept a lot, achy all over, no appetite, fever, and then I noticed the dreaded rash on one side of my back and knew what it was. Went to the Dr. this AM and was given the diagnosis of shingles. It's just beginning so I have a long, painful road ahead of me. Meds are very expensive so I'm going to see how long I can go without them. We are without health insurance since hubby was laid off his job. Had Cobra, but of course that has run out. I probably will get the pain killer Rx filled because she said I will need that! Prayers would be appreciated for a quick recovery. I'm feeling down in the dumps this afternoon!

I love my computer because my friends live in it. 1|1|I had shingles at 32 years old not good the meds were over $1000.00 but I had Ins. |STEVE|STEVBOLT@WMIS.NET|16:59:37|08/09/2012|

After seeing the information on TV, I asked my doctor and she highly recommended the shingles vaccine. So hubbie and I both got it this year. The vaccination was $225.00 each. Fortunately our insurance paid for it.

I have heard from so many people that shingles is a horrible, painful disease to get. I got scared after hearing all of that.

I recently asked my doctor if I can get it again & she said YES, I asked if I could get the shot to prevent ever getting again & she said NO not until age 55 because that is only when the insurance will pay for it :o(

I knew what it was right away. I had achy back pain in a specific area in a couple of the bones in my back for a about a week before it showed up as a rash on my left side. Ironically it was my chiropractor who said keep a eye out for a rash as it might be shingles. I have had back problems for many years..went to chiro as a kid even...so when the rash showed up one night first thing in the a.m. called and got into Dr for meds. I have limited insurance and it paid for the meds. Had 2 of them and probably cost me around $30 for both. Think one was like the Acylovir..probably generic brand and a one for the pain. It's only contagious if you let it get to the blister stage as it's the liquid from the blisters that spread it. Luckily I knew what it was and never got past the rash. Would have been a disaster if my girls got it ..could have cost them their lives. :( The pain..that took a long while to go away..long after the rash was gone I would still get those 'lightening bolt' type pains in my side and under my breast on the side of the rash. GOOD thing is, it will never spread to the 'other' side of your body. It follows the nerves and will stop midline on your body. So my rash was on my left side..would spread to middle of back but stop at spine and stop right in middle of your body in front as well. Imagine a line drawn right down your body vertically in the middle ..split it in half so to speak. Found that bizarre but oddly fascinating. :)
DON'T let it get out of hand..the sooner you get treatment the better it is. It can cause other major problems for you besides rash and pain..if it gets in your eyes it can affect your eyesight even.
Be SURE to ask if your insurance company will pay for the Shingles shot. Majority will not..even my Dr said that. I called my insurance company and even though I already had it ..and can get it again..they will not pay for the shot. It's VERY expensive and cannot afford to pay for it myself so am out of luck. Dr and chiro dr said age and stress are the 2 factors that usually bring it out. 12|1|So sorry...I have heard of more and more cases.....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|07:23:37|08/10/2012|

my doctor says there are more cases now because of the chicken pox vaccine the kids now get, there are no longer young ones with chicken pox so we are not exposed as adults to that booster you get if you are around kids with chicken pox.

Praying you get a light case.

14|1|What kind of med did she give you for pain? The regular analgesics or even opiods don't generally work for shingles pain as it is neuro (nerve) pain...something like Neurontin would probably help more than a narcotic like Norco......I hope youre feeling better soon....|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|13:07:40|08/10/2012|

She gave me Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen 5mg-500 mg for pain. As long as it knocks me out for the night and I can sleep I will be happy.
The other script is Acyclovir 800 mg 5x's a day for five days. Hope it works fast because the rash/blisters are growing!!!

Thanks everyone for your concern and well wishes. It means so much to me. If you are over 55, I would strongly recommend getting the vaccine because this is so painful . I never thought I would get shingles!

I love my computer because my friends live in it. 16|3|Ok, as long as the Norco works for you, that's great :) If you find it isnt helping with the pain after a day of taking it, definitely call for something else.....there is no reason for you to suffer with the pain while the antiviral med is taking effect and the shingles resolve!|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|14:57:05|08/10/2012|

wasn't sure what it was as at that time it didn't hurt, no pain. Then a couple days later the pain started. Never experienced so many different kinds of feelings, pain all at one time. Went to the Dr. he said it was the shinges, never heard of it. Asked what it was as the only shingles I knew of was the one on the roof. He too said it follows the nerves and it did, went around the rest of the back and onto the left side and then stopped. I had no medication then. I don't know if there was anything for it at that time. He said it would stop. I put that pink stuff (can't think of the name of it at this time) that you put on kids when they get a burn and it helps with the pain. That's all I used. Never want it back again. My insurance doesn't cover it also. The cost here would be $238.00. Don't have the money, so won't get it. With volunteering at Roswell I thought maybe they would cover it as they give us flu shots for nothing but they don't give you the shingles shot. So with luck I won't get it. However I seem to be getting everything else. Get rid of one stupid thing only to get another problem. So here's to luck.
