We actually got a t-storm & some badly needed rain Mon. night & last night. Fortunately, no nasty storms, but the dew pts. & humidity didn't ease up til mid-afternoon today.
FINALLY able to give my a/c & elect. bill a much needed rest & if no idiot burns in a so-called fire pit, we'll be able to sleep w/the windows open tonight for the 1st time in many weeks. Yay! :)
I was SO relieved & happy that I actually baked pork ribs in the oven to go w/mashed potatoes. LOL

Hope the heat will finally give you all a break as well. :)

My DH raises register Angus cattle and he only feeds hay in the winter time when there is no grass - those HUGE bales of hay that you see in farmers fields. But this year he has been feeding hay for about a month because there is no grass for the cows to eat - they are even reaching up and eating the leaves off the trees. Last year he could buy a bale of hay for about $15 and this year they are going for about $50 per bale. It is taking about a bale a day to feed his herd. He has been supplementing the hay with "range cubes" that you buy by the 100 pound bag at the feed store - in about a week, they have gone from $10 to $20 per bag. So, as a result, many farmers are selling their herds for slaughter as they cannot afford to feed them. That will mean that there will be lots of beef at the slaughter places - so prices should be cheaper - but next year there won't be any cows to take their places - so higher prices. I am not too sure that I would want to stock up on beef right now because you would be eating the "mommas and poppas and their babies". They won't be able to be fattened up but grass fed and that meat does not taste very good to me. JMHO

Yes, DH was within days of taking some of his cows to market when our son's boss heard about it (from our son) and said that he had a huge farm with no cows on it so they made a deal where we took 14 bred cows to his farm and he will feed them until they have their calves next spring and we will split the calves - he gets half and we get half and we still own the cows. I have my doubts how it will work out - but am trying to stay out of the farm business. Next thing we have to worry about is water - the ponds are drying up. We do have a spring fed creek on our place but it isn't putting up much water. Cows drink a LOT of water. Oh yes, and some of them have pneumonia - DH says they have been breathing in so much dust while trying to nibble on what little grass there is left.

Oh yes, DH went to the "sale barn" yesterday to see how the cows were selling and he said that they were bringing about half of what they brought a month ago. None of the big buyers out of Iowa or Nebraska or wherever were buying because they have all of the cattle that they can handle themselves - wether they feed them out or butcher them.

when beef prices drop, and before the projected price increase. Carnivores cannot be choosy at such times...if the beef is a bit less flavorful, so be it. That is what seasonings, marinades, and marbling is for.

Arkansas is King of Rice. More rice is produced in AR than anywhere else in the nation. The high drought we are now in, is doing a number on the rice crops. That and 34 commercial rice farmers are suing RiceTech, a hybrid company which sells quality rice to farmers to grow. The allegations are that RiceTech sold substandard rice to these farmers, which have produced substandard crops this year. And down the road, rice prices could also rise...so I'd be stocking up on rice as well. Rice will keep indefinately in an enclosed, air-tight container. 18|2|Minute Rice for 28 oz was $4.99 last week.|lv2qpon|jcummins1@rochester.rr.com|14:29:02|08/02/2012|

111-degrees! Arkansas is baking under extreme heat, and extreme drought. Hold onto your wallets, because by Winter, food prices should be rising due to the drought and heat in many states within the food basket region of the US. Seriously, watch the news over the next six months or so. Increasing drought and heat may continue to spread across the US, pushing cooler weather farther north.

A really savvy person might even try to get a duel US-Canadian citizenship, so that if the time comes, you can move yourself and your family north across the border...BEFORE any sort of mass-migration that would surely cause the Canadians to try to shut down the border with the US. And it wouldn't hurt to have an idea of where in Canada you might relocate to, if it comes to that. 12|1|Today's high temperature in Little Rock was...|inthesticks|inthesticks@windstream.net|18:34:53|07/31/2012|

We've always been in the 70's. I HATE THE 80's. Want to order topsoil to put around the yard and garden beds, but unable to do so, I would die with this heat and especially the Humidity which is what we've had pretty much of the summer. Tomorrow it's suppose to be in the low 90's. and Humid. But I've been a lot of work done inside instead of outside. This winter I won't have anything to do inside. Told hubby we can order the topsoil Dec 15th and just shuffle the snow around and put the topsoil down. I do feel sorry for those of you in the 100's. I couldn't take that. Have a good one everyone.

o Yesterday worked on my herb garden in the front yard and planted things added top soil and compost. Bf built me 2 big flower beds for the backyard, I am going to put my sunflower plants that are grown in one of them, not sure what I am going to put in the other. I still have to paint the beds and will do that early in the morning around 4 a.m. before it gets hot.
