My son is 10 tomorrow. He is in desperate need of eyeglasses,he has 3 pairs, but 2 are missing and the only pair we can find is missing a side! I don't know what he does with them! We are having a hard time affording the co-pay for right now with all of his other medical bills and mandatory flood insurance, etc. So, I was going to check into a free pair online. However, I have no idea what size glasses he should be wearing. I don't see a size anywhere on his current glasses. He's a big kid, about 106 lbs. More like a 12 or 13 year old. Adult glasses appear to be too big and the childrens ones are too small. Anyone know what size range I should be looking at? If anyone will know, I know someone on this board will... you guys always seem to know everything!

Thanks.

Get his current glasses that fit him well.

Measure the leg length from the place where it joins the front to the end over the ear. This is tricky since it's curved, but you don't have to be completely exact. This is the "temple length."

Measure the distance across the lens from side to side at its widest point. This is the "lens width."

Measure the nose piece from side to side where it connects with the lens holders. This is the "bridge."

These 3 measurements should help you decide what frame to order. Someplace like zennioptical.com lists all of these measurements for the frames they sell. You want something that has numbers close to what you measured. Some variance (1-2mm) is ok, but since your son is growing I would err on the side of bigger rather than smaller.

The other things you will need are his prescription (ask for it at his eye dr) and pupillary distance (PD). Hopefully, your eye doctor or vision center will measure this for you. When looking straight ahead, it is the distance between the two pupils. This is important so that the focal point of each lens is in front of the pupil. If you can't get a professional to measure this for you, just google "measure pd" and there are instructions available.

My DH recommends www.eyeglassdirect.com. They are in the US. Not all online glasses places are.

Hope this helps. 3|2|Thanks. I picked up two pairs for $8 shipped...|jdlaurie|savethosepennies@aol.com|23:19:14|07/17/2012|

they were on major clearance. Not sure how reputable the company is...I guess we'll see. Used paypal so I didn't compromise my bank account! Keeping my fingers crossed. That's a great price for two pairs... in his exact size and prescription.

we've never had a problem with them and super cheap with cheap shipping and such as well. www.zennioptical.com Go to Walmart and spend the $50 or so for exam and make sure to ask for the paper RX for them and have to have the Pupillary Distance written on it. Just go to Zenni website and easy peasy..fill in info for ordering right off the script you just got. Will receive the glasses in hard cases in 2 weeks or less. 5|4|We love Zenni!
