10 0|0|Son's off to college, what do we need?|dragonmom|sueedelmann@yahoo.com|22:01:46|07/05/2012|

My first born is off to college in August, I am trying to come up with a list of things he needs to get before he goes. He will have two roommates, we haven't been given info yet for him to get in touch. I have put together a list of what I think he needs, with some things we need to discuss with roommates to see if they have or should go together on costs. Here's what I came up with, and would love any comments/thoughts/suggestions as to whether he really needs things, needs more of something, shouldn't take somehing or anything I forgot.

2 Twin XL sheet sets
foam mattress pad
Pillows, pillowcases
Comforter
Extra blankets
Bed Risers/Loft
Underbed storage boxes
5 towels
5 washcloths
Desk Lamp
Lap Desk
Back Rest/study pillow
alarm clock
wastebasket
surge protectors/power strips
Extension cords
Fan
storage crates
wall safe adhesive for hanging stuff on walls
First Aid Kit
First Aid book/guide
Tool kit
Duct tape
scotch tape
scissors
school/desk supplies (pens, paper, paperclips, stapler, scissors, pencils, highlighters, sticky notes)
laptop (He has)
printer for laptop
Sewing kit
Door stop
toiletries
Flashlight
Batteries
Hangers
Over door organizer
COmmand hooks for shower
Iron/ironing board
bottle opener
can opener
microwave plates/bowls
cups
eating utensils
desk organizer

Umbrella
Laundry detergent/fabric softener
Hamper
Laundry Basket

Things Needed - shared/check with roommates
Microwave
Mini fridge
ice cube trays
vacuum/hand vacuum
cleaning supplies - Tilex, Soft Scrub, Windex, Comet, Scrubbing bubbles, Scrub Brush, rags, Pledge, broom, dust pan
Shower curtain
bath mat - non slip for in shower
bath mat/rug
area rug/throw rug
Shower caddy for in shower
Over toilet shelf unit
Over Door mirror
Light Bulbs
Black out panels for windows
Air freshener

They can have a microwave but no hot pads, toasters, etc. I don't have the room dimensions to know what they can fit, but they said a fridge is fine if there is room. They get a bed, desk, chair, and wardrobe per student.

Thanks for any tips and suggestions!

wait until your son can talk to the other roommates and see what they have. Every dorm is different. My DD could "check out" things that they needed at the front desk - they even had a complete kitchen downstairs for the students to use. I don't think boys will do much cleaning though - or ironing - or cooking. JMHO

I also remember doing quick sewing repairs, for the boys in my dorm, and some ironing for that matter.....LOL!! They will manage to survive. 5|1|Also, if you go to the college site, they should have the details on the dorm room dimensions and layout there....I found it in the Student Life pages at UWP's site....|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|07:11:12|07/06/2012|

You might want to consider some of those multi-item hangers. You can hang around 4-5 hangers on the loops then drop down one side. It really depends on how much of clothes horse they are---or how often they intend to do laundry.

Other than that:

Microwave popcorn is a must!!!
Some type of air freshener is a must for males
QUARTERS!! For laundry and possibly snacks.
Also, I agree with Joy---- lean toward the Purex 3-in-1 sheets for laundry. Less space, lighter to haul, and NO SPILLS!!!

And back when I was in the dorms (back when we had to clean the cave floor)...we didn't have carpet. It was all tile/linoleum...whatever. So a true vacuum cleaner might be overkill... find out if all they will need is a broom or mop first. If so, I'd probably get a swiffer stick and then just the wet and dry cloths for them. I know it may cost more than bottled cleaners, but space is a valuable commodity in a dorm. 7|1|Thanks for the tips|dragonmom|sueedelmann@yahoo.com|15:58:04|07/06/2012|

I don't plan to buy a thing until after he talks to his roommates and we get deails on the rooms. There are several buildings with differnt layouts, so we won't know the specifics until he gets the assignment.

I thought of another "must" with multiple guys using one bathroom - a plunger!

when he was getting ready to go off to college last year - 2 hours away - and requested everybody bring food/snacks for him to take with him - he got a huge amount of things to take with him - mostly snack foods - he stayed in a fraternity house and had a house mother/cook - but needed the snack food for in-between times and evenings and weekends.
