A couple of free things to do, if you have little kids...............Storybook Island and Dinosau Park in Rapid City.
I lived a few miles north of Rapid City for 17 years a few years ago. Other than 2-3 weeks in August when motorcycle rally is held, nothing in Sturgis. My sons both graduated from HS there.

Yellowstone has basically one main road that you can drive which loops around and hits the main attractions - Old Faithful, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Mammoth Hot Springs, some of the geyser basins, etc. Plus along the way you're sure to see the bison, marmots, antelope, etc.
Jackson Hole is an upscale touristey town. They're known especially for skiing during the winter, but even in the summer there's some stuff to see. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to go through the town, but if you're passing nearby, it's a nice town to stop and get souvenirs or to go to an old saloon type bar.
I lived in Yellowstone one summer while I was in college, the year of the great fires (1988), so if you have any questions, I might be able to answer them.
Yellowstone is beautiful, though I tend to feel that hitting the tourist attractions is just scratching the surface of the beauty of the park. Some of the most beautiful spots I saw were places I had to hike to where no one else was around.

IF you're venturing to Devil's Tower which is really cool (I thought) then are you coming thru Montana?
