Does anyone have a Vitamin D deficiency? My number is 16 on a scale of 30-100. Doc put me on 50,000 IU's once a week. Any symptoms involved with deficiency? Any ideas, suggestions? Greatly appreciate it. 1|1|Yes, I'm always D deficient|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|21:58:42|04/21/2012|

I'm on 50,000 units two times a week for most of the year.

For me the symptoms are a funny numb twinge kind of feeling in my jaw. That's the first sign I see. I'm running in the 13-15 range myself. It may cause fatique, depression, disinterest... It may also impact your bone and teeth health.

It's very common in the north east or in areas of the world where the sun doesn't shine a lot. My doc says if I were to expose 50% of my skin surface to the sun for 10 minutes a day, 3 times a week, I wouldn't need the supplements. However... 50% of your skin surface is a lot of area...so I figure 25% of my surface for 20 minutes a day 6 days a week might work... but I hate the sun!!!

As stated at Dr. Mercola's website: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and autism.

And that’s just for starters. Recent studies have also linked this miraculous vitamin to the prevention and potential cure of many other devastating and debilitating conditions including cardiovascular disease, blood pressure issues, high cholesterol levels, neurological system disorders, kidney failure, reproductive system disorders, muscle weakness, obesity, disorders of the skin and even tooth decay.

The problem is 85% of us aren’t getting enough of this “sunshine vitamin” which helps fight bone loss, infection, and abnormal cell growth.

as you stated 85% of us suffer D deficiency - and since probably 85% of us will encounter AT LEAST one of those other issues I'm not sure how that linkage can be valid. Its like saying people who breathe air may have xyz. Well of course because all people with xyz breathe air.

As with any issue, it needs to be treated... But do not lose sight if how many people this affects so naturally people with this D problem may experience these other things. That may be a link but it may not be a contributing cause. 4|3|Oh my...I am sorry that I asked (lolol)|BarbaraK|bkupiec@comcast.net|12:22:13|04/22/2012|

I always had a great level and this time it is down. I asked the doctor what the cause was and he really didn't have an answer. Besides this issue I am dealing with horrible allergies...I am dizzy, sooooooooo tired, my eyes are heavy/tired, so don't know whether it's the deficiency, the allergies or a combination. And I also take one mg of a relaxant before bed (due to anxiety/panic attacks. So I am thinking that could also have an effect on me the next also. I am a mess!!!!!! I appreciate everyones input. 8|4|My daughter had some of the same symptoms|bish8|bish212@earthlink.net|15:29:38|04/22/2012|

which is main reason why the elderly die early because of Vit D deficiency! Plus why all these years they brainwashed us into using sunscreen all the time to block out Vit D from the sun....holy cow! And reason why we had high cases of skin cancer (melanoma) for years because our bodies weren't getting the Vit D it needed...unbelievable!! I don't trust any conventional doctors anymore as I read books on health/nutrition, etc. for information plus go to a naturopathic doctor. All conventional doctors know is surgery, radiation, chemo, prescription drugs to treat the symptoms not the underlying problems! 10|2|I deal with possible MS issues.....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|17:13:52|04/22/2012|

I read some studies regarding vitamin D and MS, and started paying more attention to how things got worse for me in the winter. Since making sure I get enough vitamin D, I am having symptoms much less often. This have been enough of a difference to make me a believer in that area.

I take 8,000 I.U. Vitamin D3 daily. Must be Vitamin D3, not Vitamin D2 which is the synthetic formula. If you're considering supplemention with Vit D3, it would be wise to have your Vit D level tested from a nutritionally oriented physician. It is very important that they order the correct test. The correct test is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Vitamin D3 is found in eggs, organ meats, animal fat, cod liver oil, and fish. It is the equivalent to the vitamin D3 formed on your skin from UV-B. Vitamin D3 is not a vitamin, it's actually a hormone! Hope this was helpful - Sharon:) 5|1|I am too! diagonosed with osteoperosis|tonyas30|tonyas30@hotmail.com|12:45:01|04/22/2012|

Here's a website with info on it. I have gastroparesis and Ulcerative Colitis, so there are digestive issues and probably absorption issues for me... and I have also had kidney problems because of sleep apnea and I'm overweight. You just reminded me to take me vitamin d supplements every day. I always forget how important they are and tend not to add them to the 8 pills I already take each day. I'll start putting them in the pill box again.

Good luck, hope you figure out the cause.

Doc checked my levels about 2 years ago and they were very low. She had me on the large doses of the Vitamin D until she rechecked sthe levels in 3 months. The number came up into the normal range and since then I just take a 1000 tablet daily. It had stayed ok on that since then. 11|2|I am low as well, my dic has me on 3000 per day, i try to get sun exosure as well, am gradually inproving.|BMOREGAL|bmoregal2000@aol.com|21:12:43|04/22/2012|

IT blocks the UV rays that burns your skin. So do not stop using it in the summer. Unless you are going to the beach or live near the equitor, 1/2 1 hr at a time should not require suntan lotion. particularly if you do it on a regular basis.
Most of us seniors need exercise anyway, so take 2 to 3 30-45 min walks 2-3 times a week. Best yet, get a dog so it will require you to walk it. Walking will help you with everything. Dementia, Osteroporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes.

but you can make sure you are getting enough through your diet or spend small amounts of time in the sun without it. Elderly have a hard time making vitamin D through the skin, because of aging skin receptors

than Vit D deficiency, so use your suntan lotions. But it is not necessary in the winter, the sun is not very strong then. You need to use it only on exteneded exposure to the sun, If you exercise regularly, the gradual exposure will toughten your skin . Anytime your skin burns or gets red get out the suntan lotion.

Another saving grace for NE people, is they eat a lot of fish. Fish has the highest natural content of Vit D. aAs your mother used to say take a cod liver oil pill in place of plain Vit D. It contains lotsa of it. 1 tabs of cod liver oil has over 1300 IUs besides lots of Omega 3 oil for your heart. 16|1|I was in the same situation, very low Vit D ...also on a mega dose. My son..now 11 was diagnosed with alopecia when he was 8. He completely lost all of his hair. I was diagnosed with lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis in August of last year two months after my 35 year old hubby had a heart attack. I found a dr. who did extensive testing..my son and are are both in the 11-17 range. We are both on mega doses of vitamin d & get it rechecked every three months. I will tell you I am only 37..so age doesn't matter. In August I thought i would be disabled. Now I am back to working full time..I would take the vitamin d. and see how you feel in a few months.
