o This will be my first spring I ever got to plant a garden, I am so excited! My seedlings I ordered come in this week. I am planting 10 tomato plants, green onions, hot peppers, mild peppers, sunflowers, strawberries, green peppers, cucumbers and basil. I have some seeds already and plan to start planting them this weekend.

**Hoping my garden does well as I want to give to friends and family, donate some to a local food pantry and home can a whole bunch!

We always grow a garden every year. My husband has already planted strawberries. We will plant tomatoes, greenbeans, squash, cucumbers this year. The deer usually eat our tomato plants though. 9|1|So happy you have a place to do some growing....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|09:40:15|04/21/2012|

good for you in more ways than one. Healthy food, but also a free healthy workout, good for the mind and the spirit.

I put in a fairly large garden, I have most of my seeds in the ground, little cool now, so could go either way. Sometimes the cool spring rains cause seeds to rot. Will wait a bit before I put my plants in or if I put them in early I cover them with milk jugs, makes a great green house.

Hoping your garden comes up beautiful

This is my second year of having a garden. Last year I did really good at the beginning and then my dad passed and I was away from home so much that most of my plants did not survive the late summer heat. I had a young girl coming over to water, but it just wasn't enough. So this spring I started again. Our front porch is covered with tiny little seedling pots and everything is growing! I have several types of flowers including sunflowers too (love them), tomatoes, several types of lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, peas, and several other things that I can't remember at the moment. I just went crazy. Every morning I go out and check my little plants as I wait to get them into the ground. I still have to work and prepare a few more planter boxes (have 2 ready and am building a few more). My backyard has some areas that are too shady for most plants so I am still searching for the right ones to go there.

I just adore the old house we live in and the yard! We never had a yard before (always lived in apartments with the kids and they finally have a white picket fence around them!) Life is pretty good!

Hope your garden takes off! I know you'll enjoy working in it and watching it grow and change. V. 12|2|I was out today in the backyard getting the ground prepared, pulled up tons of clovers|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|19:19:43|04/21/2012|

o And still have more to pull up. I found some bricks in the yard and am using them like stepping stones in my garden. My boyfriend is then going to fence it all in,using chicken wire.We have rabbits, racoons and squirrels in our backyard. And 2 dogs living here mine and the upstairs neighbor and don't want then pooping in it lol. We are living in a old house was built in 1910, many years ago the lady who owned it raised geese in the backyard, I think that is soo cool!

I could grow everything. 2 tomatoe plants gives me 1/2 bushel of tomatoes every week. 2 zucchini clumps supplies, me, my office, and my neighbors.

key to success.
1. fertile soil: lots of mulch-- all grass clippings, leaves, etc goes to mulch pile. Dont toss out your clover, mulch it. Clover ias a legume, that means nitrogen.

forget about the chicken wire, It will not keep out any pest.

2. Proper amount of sunshine, leafy stuff likes shade.

3. To keep out weeds, I lay down ONE layer of newpaper between the rows and throw mulch on top to keep it from blowing away. One layer, so it will rot, unlike plastic. Kepp piling the mulch on top.

4. Because of the hudge amt of mulch, you will not need to water it ever, except the first 2 weeks after planting. Most people make the mistake of watering regularly. The regular watering causes the roots to be shallow. You want the roots to go deep. Bad especially for the tomatoes. Too much water and then soil dries out, not enough water will cause the bottom of the the tomato to turn black, Dry Rot.

5. For my tomatoes, I dig a deep hole art leeast 2 ft x 2 ft fill it will mulch and plant the tomato deep, usually bury the first 2-3 leaves. This gives it a good root system. I use heavy fencing, not chicken wire, made into a circle 3-4 feet in diamter. Put this over the plant. no need to stake it. Tomatoes like acis, so leaf mulch is great.

6. To keep out pests such as rabbits(they will eat up all your bean plants), dilute hot sauce such as tabasco, put in a spray(windex type will do. fror beans, as soon as the first 2 leaves open., You need not worry after the plant grows a bit. They seem to like it only when it is young and tender. for corn,, the actual ear to keep the deer off,

I am too old to work a garden for just me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. 16|6|Thank-you fbutte for the gardening tips and advice, very useful, I appreciate it!|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|02:59:31|04/23/2012|

although with the weather ...being cold...then warm.....then cold.....they seem to be tough this yr.....and not nearly as many in the patch

as last yr......we already have green beans about 2 inches tall....corn,i did have broccoli.....but rabbits ate it down to the nub

we also have green onions..and tomato plants are looking good............if it would stop getting cold......and frost holds off...ill be canning a bunch 19|8|Happy for you.. deer got into my strawberries last year....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|07:08:59|04/23/2012|

so I won't get many this year. First time we have had a small herd of deer here in town. This year I was all excited about my black berries, but we have had so many days of frost, and there was one night I did not get them covered, so thinking they will not do well.

is it keeps plant diseases that have wintered over in you garden from splashing up on plants when it rains.

I fence the area of my garden where I plant beans, spinach, lettuce, peas, or any thing else bunnies like to eat. I never had luck with the sprays, and they do love those young tender bean plants.

Anyone have any good tips for planting a garden in pots? I live in Florida, it's hot and there are lots of bugs... what is good to grow down here. I have very little luck...I usually wind up with little white bugs in the plants or they get moldy. So any advice would be great. I'd love to cut my produce bill back a bit.

I've had luck with lettuce, but not much else.

Thanks!

For people who just starting, you may not have enough mulch so buy a couple bales of straw and use that.

Also if there are horse stables in your area, the owners will be happy to give you the maure for free. Throw that into you milcj pile. My chestnut tree always triple its production of nuts when I fertilize it with the manure.
