I'm just a little frustrated and wanted to get opinion. We have this new coupon forum where I live for trading coupons, sharing deals, etc. So, one week I received a bunch of extra papers from my paper man. Now, I pay him for the papers, just not the $2 per paper. He normally recycles the papers anyway and to make a little extra money he sells the papers to me.
So, I put a post up on this site that I have extra papers and will sale (which probably wasn't the best term to use) for .50 each. Then after a few days I posted that I could let the inserts go for .25 each. Well, someone on the site emailed the moderator and here is the message I got " A fellow Savvy Shopper forum poster has been asking if it's legal for you to sell these papers and where you are getting them. I deleted your post so that if it is you won't get in trouble. I'm not sure if it is or not, so rather safe than sorry."
This was my reply back to her. I understand. The way I look at it is I'm going to the trouble of getting these by driving and using my gasoline and time and pulling them from the newspaper so they don't have to (although I hadn't done that yet with yours). I considered people were paying for my time to do this while at the same time saving them money. It's the same as if they are ordering online from a service or going through Ebay.
Why can't people just be happy that they are getting them at a great price instead of paying $2 per paper? Why do they have to throw the "illegal" thing out there? I would not do anything illegal. I simply thought I was helping others out that might not have the money for several $2 papers.

Why does a $2/1 any Tide coupon take more time to clip than a .50/2 Cool Whip coupon? It doesn't. they just feel more comfortable. Pure and simple...it isn't illegal. In regards to that little blurb that people put when selling them, "the fee is for my time to clip the coupons, not the coupons themselves", interestingly enough, ebay actually says in fine detail that it is against their rules to put that in, that you should just say you're selling the coupons, not your time. Here, from their own help pages: Also, sellers can't claim that the price of the coupon is based on the value of the labor involved in clipping the coupons instead of the coupons themselves. Under eBay rules, the coupons themselves are the items being sold.

The blurb on the bottom of a coupon that says it cannot be sold, transferred, etc. etc.? I mean, taken literally, I can't "transfer" a coupon from my paper to my neighbor. But I have often wondered. 6|2|They can write ANYTHING on the coupon....they print them! But that doesn't make it law. I can send you a piece of paper declaring myself queen of America if you opened the envelope....but writing it doesn't make it law. There is more about the transferring....supposedly that means from one medium to another (scanning an insert coupon to a pdf file transfers it). I am not worried about it. no law exists. Just like the form that are "void if sold".....ummmm, I sold it. Someone bought it. It didn't fall to ash on the way over voiding itself. You will not go to jail because you do not follow them. But someone along the line may not get paid. That said, they will have to prove it.

I appreciate all of your replies. Now, they are saying it's not the coupons themselves it's how I get the papers. Why do they care? I'm not stealing them. I pay for every paper I get I just don't pay the regular paper price. I don't feel I should give the name of the person I get the papers from either, do you? And, I don't get the same amount of papers every week. Some weeks I get 10, other 20, and sometimes others 50. It really just depends.
What I thought was going to be something to help people out now seems like it may turn into a big mess.

If you go to a gas station or grocery store at closing time Sun. night or at opening time Mon. morning (hopefully before the Sunday ones are retrieved) & ask, most places are more than willing to give you the leftover Sun. papers for free. They just tear off the top part of the paper 1st, but leave everything else intact.

Alot of people do, whether they're trading coupons, forms or upc's. It sums it up that you're not selling them, per se, but merely asking for a h/f for the time & work you put into obtaining them, cutting, sorting, listing, etc., kwim? ;)

on telling them on where I am getting them for that very reason. I'm not sure what the rules are for our paper. I do know that the ones that are not distributed are either throw in the trash or recycled.

out of my paper that I have delivered, lol. I get the Chicago Tribune delivered on Sunday, out of the last five weeks, I have only gotten one full set of inserts. The plastic bag is slightly opened and my inserts are being taken out. I keep calling and it keeps being a problem. So somewhere along the line of delivery, someone is nabbing inserts.

the ss c/o's after sunday if you ask. They have
to return the papers for credit but can take out
the c/o's. Some of them also will keep them for
themselves. If you know the manager or owner of
a small mom and pop store just ask. The most they
can do is say no and no one will be in trouble.
