My DD was a third grade teacher for many years and every year she would get out her button box during class time and give each student a handful of buttons and told them to seperate them in any way that they wanted to - then she would go around and ask each student why he/she arranged them the way that they did. Some seperated them by the number of holes - 2 or 4. Or maybe if they had a shank on them. Or by color. One boy had his seperated so odd that she could not figure out what was his idea - seems that she had "borrowed" her Grandmother's button box. The boy had seperated the buttons to those that had threads still on them and those that did not.
