More than 1.4 million families in the US do. This is from USA Today. TLC should maybe do a show called Extreme Poverty! One in five of these people do live in some sort of subsidized housing, but what about the other 4?

I watched a few videos and read a few articles about the kids at Whitney Elementary in Las Vegas, a good deal of those kids are homeless. They were taking ketchup packets from the cafeteria to make ketchup soup at home. Just broke my heart. One little girl said they ate a rat once for dinner. Here is one of the news clips:

Oh, also in that article you posted, I see they quoted that guy from the heritage foundation. He is probably the worst person to ask about poverty and it drives me nuts when they ask him and quote him...he thinks having a vcr makes you "not so poor" and the heritage foundation brags about how they wrote the welfare reform legislation. Imagine that, they were not elected but they wrote the legislation! Wow, huh? 2|2|I know. It's all so bad!|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|11:45:38|02/25/2012|

There's just so much corruption and it makes me crazy too.

In my little college town we have 71 homeless kids enrolled in our school district. They did a homeless count and found 213 homeless here, but the actual number is much greater because even homeless advocates will tell you that homeless people become good at hiding. They have to or else they get ticketed for trespassing, sleeping, etc.

Homelessness is something that I really care about. 3|3|me too, we've been homeless|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|11:59:59|02/25/2012|

One time it was when my daughter was starting kindergarten, we were going from motel to motel until we ran out of money, still had a car though. An agency paid for us to stay in a better motel for a few weeks and it was the beginning of school. I didn't dare let that school know we were homeless and living in a motel because I know they would have taken my kids away. So I drove her to kindergarten and we hid it from them, I didn't look much different than the other Moms dropping off their children.

About 3 weeks later, we got into subsidized housing and I was so happy I cried. That was a very hard time for us all and I can't imagine living like that any longer than a few weeks. But these kids at this school in Las Vegas, live this way all the time. In those weekly/monthly motel rooms without a permanent home or just on the street, period. So this story broke my heart and I found the contact information for the school and I am going to see what I might have here to send over. I was actually going to post on here and see if anyone else wanted the address to send a box of food or toiletries, etc. At least at this school, the principal cares a great deal about the families and instead of ripping their kids away, gives them all that she can, just a beautiful story.

Amazing to me, right there in the midst of such wealth..near the strip in Las Vegas...are children this poor. Something is wrong with it, horribly wrong.
