We've got 6 good reasons why sipping soda is a habit you should kick.Do you spend most days with a can of soda by your side? You might want to break that habit. Turns out, all soda -- even diet -- is bad you, and new research suggests it's especially harmful to women. Here are six reasons to give up soft drinks for good.

1. Soda makes you fat. Both regular and diet soft drinks are tied to obesity. In one study, people who drank diet sodas had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference over a few years compared to those who skipped soft drinks.

Diet soft drinks are particularly insidious, says RealAge cofounder Michael F. Roizen, M.D. "Sweet diet soda fuels your desire for other sweets," he explains. It also has a "health halo" effect. "You view choosing a 'diet' drink as virtuous (all those calories saved!). So it feels like you can afford to reward that virtue with a hot fudge sundae."

2. Soda boosts your risk of serious disease. The extra belly fat that often comes with a soft drink habit is linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A recent study in the Journal of Internal Medicine also tied a daily diet soda habit to a higher stroke risk.

3. Regular soft drinks may cause cancer. New research from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health finds drinking two or more regular soft drinks per week may almost double your risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers speculate that the sugar overload from regular soda triggers insulin production that fuels cancer cell growth.

4. It's bad for your teeth. Yep, your mom was right about this one. And here again, even diet soda is bad news because sugar isn't the worst offender in soft drinks. The big culprit is soda's high acid content: phosphoric, malic, citric, and tartaric acid strip tooth enamel. Citrus-flavored soft drinks are the worst -- they dissolve enamel up to five times more than colas.

5. It's bad for your bones. The same acids that are bad for your teeth also coax calcium from your bones. That goes for regular and diet caffeinated soda. Can't give up your Diet Coke? Roizen recommends upping your daily calcium tally by an extra 20 mg for every 12 ounces of soda you sip.

Instead of soda, try this surprising sipper to build your bones.

6. It's bad, even if you don't gain weight. New research from the American Heart Association finds that women are more vulnerable than men to the harmful effects of drinking two or more sugar-sweetened drinks -- including soda -- per day. Soda-sipping women are likely to have a larger waist size, higher "bad" LDL cholesterol, higher levels of triglycerides (harmful fatty acids that can cause heart disease), higher blood sugar, and lower "good" HDL cholesterol -- even if they don't put on a pound.

Tho it's much better than soda. Because tea has tanic acid, used in tanning leather, causes hardening of the arteries. Green tea is better, but still has the acid. KOOLAID IS COLORED, SUGARED WATER, gATERADE TOO. The coloring is from petroleum by products. I drink mostly water, juice , and tea with ginger and lemon added. A small amount of other bad stuff is OK, JUST DON'T OVER DO It. Your body can get rid of small amounts of bad stuff. Stick to the more natural stuff. 90% of stuff in the supermarket is bad for you.
Canned food contains PCM, from the can itself, causes cancer. No wonder one of 5 has diabeties. Look at the sugar content in your food, and it is getting higher. I prefer food with lower sugar and salt content. But not many others do. Everybody likes the ultra sweet stuff.
ALSO STUDIES SHOW DARK CHOCLATE helps fight high blood pressure. But most chocolate in the market has the dark part taken out, because people like the sweet better. Hot cocoa is a better drink, but make sure it is real cocoa. Swiss miss, DOES NOt contain real cocoa. It has a fake cocoa, because it is cheaper. Read the ingredients label. Do you know that peanut butter, not labeled all natural, contains hydronated oil? Another name for trans fat.

Sounds to me like the food companies and the drug companies are in cohots with each other. One to make you sick and the other to sell you pills to offset that, at a very high price. 8|2|Kind of off-topic but.....|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|12:39:40|02/21/2012|

Back when I was a teen, I babysat for a gal who always put grape or orange kool-aid in her little boy's bottle or sippy cup. Drove me nuts even as a teen & believe it or not, she was the same age as me. I babysat for him from when he was not quite 1 yr. to about 4. I swear the poor kid was always puking up that horrid grape or orange kool-aid, probably from too much sugar. :( It was awful! As soon as she left, I'd dump that crappy kool-aid & give him a fresh bottle/sippy cup w/MILK. She tried to tell me she couldn't get him to drink milk which I thought rather odd cuz he eagerly drank it just fine for me!
That's been many, many yrs. ago but I often wonder how he's doing now as a young man, & how his teeth & stomach are. Plain water would've been SO much better. He was such a cutie & always so good too.
And to this day because of that, I am not overly fond of any kool-aid (except lemonade or pink lemonade flavor once in a great while), especially orange or grape. Can't even stand orange or grape soda pop. Just the site of it makes my stomach queasy. :( Ooof!

Smile... it makes people wonder what you're up to!

sodium bicarbonate. Soda drinkers NEED TO take extra potassium. We should take equal amounts of sodium and potassium. But sodium is used more. You ever wonder why after eating a particularly salty meal, you cannot satisfy your thirst no matter how much water you drink? DRINK A GLASS OF ORANGE JUICE AND NOTE THE DIFFERENCE. 6|3|BOY i am learning alot here just from posts keep the info coming along |lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|22:37:13|02/20/2012|

after learning about the dangers of aspartame causing weight gain & cravings for more sweets. I also have been using a water filter system for over 20 years because of fluoride, chlorine and many other nasty chemicals put in drinking water. I brew my own iced teas daily consisting of white, green, red & herbal teas using stevia/xylitol for sweetener. Ones like mt dew, orange pops, gatorade, etc. They contain bromine which will slowly poison you. Look for "bromulated vegetable oil" or any variation of the word bromine. Bromine is also added to some enriched flours and hidden in breads, baked goods. We are the only country that hasn't banned its use in foods. Its crazy, the gov has very detailed instructions for how to clean up a hazardous spill of bromine and yet at the same time it is an approved food additive. Our family takes iodine supplements to push out the harmful halogens like bromine.
Edited to say that bromine is a harmful halogen.
