I have only had two so far, and the first one, I learned that your monthly cycle has alot to do with having any pain issues.

I haven't had one yet either. My dr. has recommended more than once that I start having them regularly, just to play it safe, but I keep hedging. He's agreed not to hound me too much now but said he will be more insistent once I reach 50. So.... I have a couple more yrs. to stew about it. :-p LOL
There is NO history of breast cancer whatsoever in my family so I'm grateful to have that positive edge in my corner. :)

unless there is a problem that needs investigation, I wouldn't have a mammogram. Think about it, it is radiation, directly on your breasts. 6|2|Yes, I agree, that it is radiation. I had the two done years ago, and will NEVER have another one. |driller|harj@frontier.com|22:42:25|01/27/2012|

~Judy in MI~ :) No breast cancer in my family, but that doesn`t mean I can not get. I just do the best I can by eating the right choice of foods, and using
nothing on my skin that I would not eat myself. The skin is an organ, so anything that you use on it, that you can not eat should not be applied.

I'm tired right now so I might be wrong on this info...but aren't there studies that have shown that an iodine deficiency results in cysts in the breasts? I seem to remember something about it. I do take iodine each day for other reasons.

No breast cancer in my family either but yes, doesn't mean I can't get it. I don't want to invite it by having a mammogram though. The less radiation the better.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, I wish the media would talk about heart disease as much as breast cancer. 8|4|My understanding is, that if there are cysts present, that you can have them shrink or go away, just by changing your diet habits...|driller|harj@frontier.com|23:02:23|01/27/2012|

This one gal I just did a job for last month, her hubby had cancer really bad and was almost gone just by changing his diet
and what he ate. But now I can not remember what she told me he consumed, but it is not legal in the US.
They were in Germany and did natural healing. I think most all of the other countries have these beliefs.

She also said that he got deathly ill when he ate store bought eggs, but he was fine eating the farm ones.
Go figure on that one. She said it had something to do with what the chickens were fed.

I sure wish I could remember how he got rid of his cancer. Sigh. Guess I must be getting old. Gosh..., that is terrible.

Gesh. If I can remember I will LYK.

I have heard there have been several cures for cancer but they have been suppressed by big pharma. I know one thing that sticks out in my mind, how the cancer cells need sugar to survive, is that right? So if you remove the sugars, grains, starches from your diet it should starve them out. Worth a try anyhow and I know that a low carb diet is good for heart disease too. 17|6|I hate to say it but I've been hearing this too. :(|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|10:11:14|01/28/2012|

They don't want a cure for cancer cuz there's too much money to be made off the cancer drugs.
All I know for sure is IF this is true, the poop is going to hit the fan at some point when it blows up & then, SOMEONE had dang well better be held accountable for all the senseless & needless pain & suffering & deaths!

It really wasn't bad at all. The worst part was being topless in front of the tech! No, but really. The test wasn't bad at all. My mom told me they 'flatten it like a pancake!" Well, yes and no. Yes they flatten it out but, for me, just as I began to feel a twinge, it stopped. So it wasn't bad at all.

I was really nervous too.
I would also suggest that if you decide to listen to anyone who says "don't get one", that you talk that over with your doctor before you decide.
Some women really are at a higher risk for breast cancer and I know and understand the concerns over radiation, but these kind of things need to be weighed and decided on an individual basis.

I really need to get another one. It's been a few years and with no insurance it is hard to get an appointment here without going through the clinic (which costs some money), but that is on my list this year too. Just know that it wasn't bad and the tech told me that I could take Tylenol after if I did feel pain (I didn't need to take anything). Good luck to you! 13|2|I agree with you...|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|07:44:31|01/28/2012|

this is a very individual thing. Some woman don't need to go as often as others. I go every year, have a couple areas that they keep an eye on.

Have a friend no family history, very healthy, just over 50 lost both breast last year, thanking God she decided to get a mamogram. The doctor told her the only risk factor she had was her age, and if she was not so healthy, it would have developed at a younger age.

DANGERS OF SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY
Mammography poses a wide range of risks of which women worldwide still remain uninformed.

Radiation Risks
Radiation from routine mammography poses significant cumulative risks of initiating and promoting breast cancer (1- 3). Contrary to conventional assurances that radiation exposure from mammography is trivial- and similar to that from a chest X-ray or spending one week in Denver, about 1/ 1,000 of a rad (radiation-absorbed dose)- the routine practice of taking four films for each breast results in some 1,000-fold greater exposure, 1 rad, focused on each breast rather than the entire chest (2). Thus, premenopausal women undergoing annual screening over a ten-year period are exposed to a total of about 10 rads for each breast. As emphasized some three decades ago, the premenopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, each rad of exposure increasing breast cancer risk by 1 percent, resulting in a cumulative 10 percent increased risk over ten years of premenopausal screening, usually from ages 40 to 50 (4); risks are even greater for "baseline" screening at younger ages, for which there is no evidence of any future relevance. Furthermore, breast cancer risks from mammography are up to fourfold higher for the 1 to 2 percent of women who are silent carriers of the A-T (ataxia-telangiectasia) gene and thus highly sensitive to the carcinogenic effects of radiation (5); by some estimates this accounts for up to 20 percent of all breast cancers annually in the United States (6).

I know several women who wouldn't be alive now if they hadn't had a mammo that showed a problem. To me its well worth the brief discomfort and possible radiation risk.

Prevention is key. Would you not get your teeth xrayed? Ignoring your oral health directly impacts heart health. Its all connected. 16|1|I had one recently... it doesn't hurt|jdlaurie|savethosepennies@aol.com|08:58:53|01/28/2012|

It's a little uncomfortable because the squish your boob on a cold flat machine... and they move it around for you... but that's it... Just a little pressure, no pain.

I certainly wouldn't skip the mammogram. My mother died of breast cancer. If only she had regular Mammograms.... I'm sure it helps more people than it causes cancer on. I would much rather submit myself to radiation to make sure I don't die of cancer, than roll the dice. The doctors said that because Mom had breast cancer, my sisters and I have a one in three chance of getting it ourselves. There are three sisters. So one of us will likely have to deal with it ourselves sometime in our lives.

It's really not that bad at all... and it's only once a year.

I'm smaller in breast size and its not the most comforatble experience but its not that bad either. I guess it depends on what you consider painful - we all have different levels of pain or what we think is pain. Stay off caffiene for a week before you go - it will help if you have cysts. I have what they call very dense breasts and even staying off caffiene I'm very cysty (if thats a word lol) Anyway - bring a good book because it can take awhile.

Thanks!

getting flattened like a pancake and yes to me it's painful - not going to lie!! I stopped going 4 years ago after gyno telling me to go yearly and I knew the more I had it done, increases my chance of getting breast cancer. Thankfully never had any problems with lumps, cysts, etc. Next time I go will get a Thermography which is much safer. However, most insurance companies probably don't cover this. HTH, Sharon:)

They've had these out for the past 3 years and I haven't experienced any pain but before I used to bite my lip with pain.I do think the least you are exposed to radiation, the better. I am going to start going every other year now. Soon Insurance companies may not be covering a free mammogram and I'm not sure what I will do when that happens. I only go to the doctor now when I HAVE to simply because of the cost I have to pay since my insurance sucks compared to what it was. Nothing gets better

I think the worst part was no deodorant allowed since it can affect the pictures. But really, they don't care. They're used to people's pitties smelling a little, LOL!

If your boobs get sore before your period, schedule it to avoid that time. You can take some pain reliever before hand if you're worried about pain. In talking with other women, those who complained about pain for the test had lumps that were getting investigated. So if you don't have any lumps you need looked at, you should do fine.

It literally takes just a few minutes and then you're done.

If you're worried about radiation, ask if there's a low-rad test or if they can maybe do an ultrasound one. I had a smoosh and an ultrasound. My friend who has implants can't get a traditional squooshing one and will have to get ultrasound kind because the smooshing might pop a saline bag (for safety's sake).

It's quick and easy and worth the peace of mind.
