found out about the dangers of canola oil few years ago mainly used in baked goods. Only oils I use are olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil - all organic. 2|1|Wow!I have been using...|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|10:48:15|01/27/2012|

Beside olive oil, which is what i use almist for everything, iv been using canola oil as my secondary when a lighter oil is required in recipes. I switched to canola oil from vegtable oil, lard or shortning because it was grilled into me that it was the healthier choice! Fortunately, as i mentioned, i use mostly olive oil. We buy big containers of it at Costco and its cheap this way. SO i wont buy anymore canola oil and THANK YOU for the heads up. QUESTION: what should my secondary oil be then for frying and baking cakes? Something that isnt expensive?

I prefer coconut oil, organic virgin, for everything but it can get expensive. Lard would be good as well, and more affordable.
I'm with you, not going to use canola anymore at all, cannot believe they allow this stuff on the market! 5|3|I have a new bottle I bought last month|pattyo|pattyolc@aol.com|15:56:14|01/27/2012|

But did you also know, there are issues with certain brands of olive oil? Yep. You have to do your own research, but have read more than one
article on the way they process it too. Main thing with buying olive oil, is to buy it in metal can or dark bottle, and turn the bottle upside
down to see if it is cloudy. If it is, then it is the better olive oil. I can`t remember what all I read about it, but they are selling
tons of the bad olive oils, and YES, they do go rancid. Never, ever buy olive oil in a clear jar or one that is out in the light. Something
to do with the light makes it go rancid quicker. :((

I use only my homemade butter, which nothing taste better . I do use organic olive oil, but my # one oil is organic coconut oil.

Now on the lard, you have to read the label once again, if you buy in store. I personally make my own with grass fed beef, pork with no nitrates.
Some of the lards in stores, have added ingreds including oils and some even have hydrogenated oils. You just have to learn to read all the ingred
label before you buy. I would refuse to buy if it has any addivtives I can not pronounce. Some states I have heard , down south have to good lard
that is very good, but just have to know the source and ask questions.

So much to learn about all this so called good food ingreds they want to suck you into buying and will do everything in their power to sell no matter
what, even if it is not healthy.

12|2|ty, didn't know that about olive oil!! and the lard, I do read all the labels|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|00:53:47|01/28/2012|

I also keep the bacon grease in a jar for frying and I do read the labels on the lard packages. We have a great little market in our town that has stuff from local farms and dairies, they seem to have the best items. And the meats cannot be beat, the prices are really good too.

Thank you for the information about olive oil, I had no idea! Any suggestions for what brands to buy? I can't afford the pricey ones but I don't want an unhealthy one either. 10|1|cinda?? The regulators don't care about keeping us healthy at all, it is a flood of lies that comes from all those "protective" agencies. I study how they do it sometimes. Manipulate the data in studies, promote studies done with corporate bias...and boom, the next thing you know it all over the news about this new "healthy" recommendation. But they don't stop there, at the very same time...there are movies about it, articles in magazines, radio shows, tv shows...it is simply indoctrination. We are bombarded with lies about foods and other health issues because you know if you say it long enough and loud enough...people will believe it.

Just look how strong the belief is for the lipid hypothesis, nearly everyone I know believes fats are harmful and cause heart disease, obesity, etc. The lipid hypothesis has never been proven to be true, in fact is has been disproven. Those good fats actually help heart disease and keep us thin! But what do we still hear? Low-fat dogma everywhere...and diabetes, for one, is at an epidemic rate. The low fat religion hasn't been around very long, about 30 yrs or so but nobody even questions it anymore. It is so sad to me, we have so many people who are sick from these foods.

Another sinister thing I notice too: The women's magazines and tv shows and such that are targeted to women...they always push this health dogma to women. Why? I think because they know that as mothers and wives, we are the ones who are shopping, taking the children to the doctors, etc. We want to care for our families so they target us with nice charming advertising, warm celebrities and such...so we will fall for their recommendations. Dad is usually too busy to investigate it (and he is being bombarded with the ads too), Mom is shopping at stores with aisles filled with harmful foods and it is overwhelming at times.

One particular thing that has made me cry more than once, the Gardasil targeted campaigns in women's magazines. Pushing Moms to get their girls and now boys too, vaccinated with this dangerous vaccine. So many girls have died from it or been permanently disabled for life with serious neurological problems. Oh! And the push from schools and ads to get our children on psychiatric meds! I have cried so many times about this! I weep for those children...for well-meaning loving Moms who fall victim to this. It is so sad to me. The amount of kids on antidepressants and other strong meds like these is rising all the time. The only ones who are making out here is big pharma...not our babies, not our families at all.

And you are right, we have to do a lot of research on our own to find out the truth. Pay no mind to the nice lady on the morning show and skip past that dandy new article in family circle...go straight to the history of these things and read the actual studies for yourself, as often as you can. It is a lot to weed through but we have to do our best for our children and families.

Sorry for the rant but these things bring me to tears. I cringe when I see this manipulation being done to the public and I pray that more and more parents see past the glossy pages...and the charming celebrity...and find the truth about our foods and drugs. 17|3|You nailed it Cinda....|Sharon|corvettelady@lavabit.com|23:01:38|01/28/2012|

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canola-oil/AN01281

Health concerns about canola oil that are being circulated on the Internet are unfounded.

Misinformation about the safety of canola oil may stem from the fact that, years ago, oil was produced from the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil contains very high levels of erucic acid, a compound that in large amounts can be toxic to humans. The canola plant was developed by natural crossbreeding from the rapeseed plant. Canola oil is produced from canola plants, not rapeseed plants. Canola plants have very low levels of erucic acid.

Canola oil is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact, canola oil is very low in saturated fat and has a very high proportion of monounsaturated fat, so it's a healthy and safe choice when it comes to oils.

I think I'll continue to use it. I was freaked out when this was posted but after doing some searching of my own, I've come to the conclusion that it's safe. No offense to any previous posts, just my opinion.

Do you know that all polular brands of peanut butter(a supposeingly healthy food contains hydrnated oil (another name for trans fat). Read the ingredients list. They said "Canola oil is produced from canola plants, not rapeseed plants."

That is simply a lie. There are no "canola" plants, that is absurd. The name came from "canadian oil, low acid" and it is indeed rapeseed.

From wikipedia:

Originally, Canola was bred from rapeseed in Canada by Keith Downey and Baldur R. Stefansson in the early 1970s,[5][6] but it has a very different nutritional profile in addition to much less erucic acid.[7] The name "canola" was derived from "Canadian oil, low acid" in 1978.[8][9] Genetically modified rapeseed is sometimes referred to as Rapeseed 00. A product known as LEAR (for low erucic acid rapeseed) derived from cross-breeding of multiple lines of Brassica juncea may also be referred to as canola oil and is considered safe for human consumption.[10]
