Went to the dentist today. I go to a dental office owned by a larger company. My previous dentist left and there was a new one there today. In the last year I have had a root canal, couple crowns, and couple fillings done by the previous dentist. Today went to see this new one. He poked and poked around on my teeth. He asked the hygentist which crowns I had done there and which were done previously at another dentist. He then sits me up and says 2 of the crowns you had done elsewhere have a small space between the crown and the tooth. So what we will need to do is get you in and replace these. I said NO. I DON"T THINK SO. He said if bacteria gets in there it will eat away at the tooth. So I said the tooth would get infected and I would have to have a root canal? He said yep. I said I was not having anything done. He said it would only get worse. I said I would think about it but had no plans to have it done. He said well it's your choice, glad to meet you and left the room. I asked the hygentist which teeth (he did not tell me). My previous dentist never said anything about this. They were done by 2 different dentists several years apart. I cannot see anything or feel anything. Plus this guy did not ask how old they were or anything.

What is your experience with this? What would you do?

I have been trying to research this on line but have not really found anything. 1|1|I would go to different dentist for second opinion....|Sharon|corvettelady@lavabit.com|22:46:35|01/25/2012|

and seeing how it goes in the next couple months. 4|4|I asked once and if you have a crown on a tooth and need a root canal on it later... they drill right through the crown. Those suckers are glued on tight.|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|09:49:32|01/26/2012|

Who did those two suspect crowns? I would go back to that dentist and ask the dentist who did the first ones. I imagine he asked because he didn't want to have to fix it for free because of the other guy's workmanship. Crowns are designed to last 10-15 years... so if they're older, they'd need replaced at some point anyway.

I am not going to go back to the old dentist. That is not an option. 6|1|I'm suspicious...|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|12:39:27|01/26/2012|

I would definitely get another opinion. Talk to friends and get a reference. It IS possible for stuff to get in. I have a crown where there is a tiny little opening and I have asked my dentist about it. He said it's not an issue now - we'll keep an eye on it. This is not a root-canalled tooth, by the way.

And, yes, they can do a root canal through the crown. So if you already have a crown, you shouldn't have to get a new one after a root canal.

7|2|sounds like he was trying to make more money off you to me i would get a 2nd opinion (m)|lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|14:07:37|01/26/2012|

i have a tooth that completely fell off after having a root canal and my dentist juts fills it in with the temporary filling stuff cuz i refuse to get a crown i can't afford and don't want to swallow
plus they were going to have to cut my gum and put something else in it to make a tooth before they could put a crown on it and i don't feel it is worth it

don't bother me at all

you a good recommendation. Too bad you don't live near Canandaigua N.Y. I have a wonderful dentist who is not in it for the money. He only does what is absolutely necessary. There are dentists and others out there that puff up the prices and are over cautious, wanting everything to be perfect. 9|1|Definately not going back to him...|Julie|juliejulie1975@yahoo.com|14:38:36|01/26/2012|

He was very brusk and as I think about it now I wish I would have asked more questions. He did not explain anything to me at all. Just said this is what we will do. Maybe to be perfect in a perfect world it could/should be redone. But I really don't think it is a problem. Even if there was a problem, it would not rot out of my mouth tomorrow! 10|2|I have crowns that have been there 20 years. I also had a crown drilled through to do a root canal. tooth. A good dentist would take the time to go over everything and treat you with kindness. 11|1|Update...|Julie|juliejulie1975@yahoo.com|22:40:28|01/26/2012|

I called to the office this afternoon. I asked them to look and see if anything had been written about this "problem" in my chart before. The answer is NO. I also asked the hygentist if she say this but she did not say she did. She said the dentist found it with his special instruments. I saw the previous dentist for treatment of the tooth next to one of these crowns the middle of November and she said nothing. She was a great dentist. (Wish she didn't move half way across the country to get married and be a dentist there. When I saw her in November for the last time she hugged me and thanked me for being a great patient. I just feel she would have said something if she say anything as an issue or possible future issue.)
I
Also found out that this new dentist just graduated from dental school and has only been practicing for about 7 or 8 weeks. Yes he has education but little experience. So I have decided that I am not going to go back to him. For the time beeing, I am not going to worry about this. If I notice any changes I will do something right away. I am going to ask around and find another dentist. I am going to go to that one and not tell them anything about this and see what they say. If I say I am coming for a 2nd opinion they might side with the other dentist. Also I have a follow up appointment with an endodontist who did my root canal in a couple of months (see you again in 6 or 7 months). I might ask him what he thinks. 15|2|That's great, you taking charge of the situation. Today we do have to be our own health advocate at times. Even if I needed to have these replaced I really don't think I would be comfortable having this done by someone with so little experience. 13|1|went|joseph|parkerjoe3@yahoo.com|01:14:22|01/27/2012|

to the dentist today was thinking about this a little between drilling and pain well not so much but if the crown doesn't hurt don't think you need to do anything i know if the pain is bad then you'll need a root canal i guess it's also called an abcessed tooth 14|2|No Joseph No Pain|Julie|juliejulie1975@yahoo.com|09:05:28|01/27/2012|

I cannot tell any difference in them from other teeth. I have had an absessed tooth before so I know what it will feel like. LOL Just going to see how it goes from here.
