I have an appointment on Wednesday and I know they are going to be "pushing" this. I was a new patient in July and said I was not going to have it done then. Had some other issues to deal with at that time. I have read some stuff about it and it really seems like it is not necessary. I am 36 years old never smoked, don't drink. I think my risk would be so low it would not make sense. If you have been offered it and not taken it do you have to sign a rejection form or somehting. I had it done last year right at a cancer institution. I keep getting little white spots (just like kanker sores) but they aren't. They keep coming back. I was nervous about the spots and my dentist said it would be a good idea to get it done. For peace of mind I did. I too never smoked. wasn't around anyone who did, and had developed lung cancer and had to have chemo. Due to the chemo, the spots starting forming in my mouth, very small and they were hurting besides, and I was told that after the tests they were not cancerous, just that some patients get them (for life will never go away) due to the chemo. And some don't. I was one of the lucky ones to have it for the rest of my life. BUT I'm glad I did it!!!
Will have it done periodically. ( I think they told me every 1 1/2-2 years) just to make sure even though they told me they wouldn't turn cancerous. It wasn't painful. Took from about 20 minutes or so -1/2 hour. I don't think it would hurt to get it checked out if the Dr., recommended it. You never know. And it's better to be safe then sorry.
