12 0|0|Q??? about providing at home elderly care.........|couponsnsamples|cpsnsamples@aol.com|20:54:09|01/12/2012|
Posted on Jan-12-12 at 08:54 PM (Eastern) by 64.12.116.68

anyone know of a link....or have information...about this.........

what i want to know.......since medicaid and social security pay for a elderly person to be in a nursing home...........

will they pay for at home care........im in kentucky

i am sooooooooo sick of walking into that nursing home and finding my dad in unsuitable situations............

i am considering taking him home.........but....i need some kind of help....for the time i cannot be there for him

today.......my dad had been up and in his wheel chair since around 9:30....i was down there from app 9:45 till 11:30
i could tell he was getting tired.....but it was almost lunch.......one of his nurses says....soon as he eats lunch i will put him to bed

my brother walked in at 4:15 this afternoon to find him slumped over the bedside serving table...sound asleep....(if table had not been there...he would have fallin in the floor)
my brother tries to wake him,,,,finally he wakes up...couldnt even sit himself up in the chair straight......my brother has to push him up......then realizes his hands are covered with

dried blood....face covered...down to his mouth....down his shirt....ect......
my brother puts him in the bed.....starts to clean him but decides to get a nurse.......he ask who his nurse was....they had to chase her down....then all of a sudden.....

4 of them makes an appearance in the room.....trying to be conserned...
had he been put to bed after lunch....he would have still been in the bed........

so many of the old workers have quit.....its all newbies.....but that still does not excuse them for leaving him up.....from 9:30 till nearly 4:30 without being put to bed! 1|1|They pay for specific home health services only, not for 24 hr care...ie, they will pay for a bath aide to come once a week, or for home therapies if warranted, etc....but a caregiver isnt covered on a daily basis...and it is very expensive. :(|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:15:56|01/12/2012|

ETA: You may be able to find someone 'privately'...contact one of those caretakers from the nursing home that you liked, see if they can come sit with him a few times a week while you do shopping, etc..you could pay them their going wage rather than paying the agency wages (which are usually at least double the average wage rate)...some of our CNAs where I work also do "private duty" on the side :)

Also, you need to speak to the Director of Nurses about your concerns and complaints....see what kind of response you get from her/him....they may be able to lay down the law a little and get things straightened up at the nursing home.

Also, if you can give the staff specifics about what you would like to see as part of his daily care, they can careplan that so all staff are aware of his 'routine' and care needs....for example, if you'd like him to lay down for one hour after breakfast, and one hour after lunch for a nap, they can put that in place routinely. I would advise he not be in bed too much, as then he may sleep too much during the day and be up at night....plus it's better for the skin to be up for some of the time, but repositioned every 2 hours (ie, in bed for one hour, then up in a recliner chair or wheelchair for a couple hours, then to the bathroom, then to a meal (he could be seated in a regular chair for that at the dining table), then down for a nap, etc....

Joy :)

3|1|I guess I'm wondering where the blood came from & why he was so out of it that he couldn't even sit up by himself?|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|22:22:57|01/12/2012|

Is he unable to sit up by himself due to health reasons alone or is he possibly being overmendicated? If there's a possibility of him being overmedicated, I'd be checking w/his dr. to maybe have the medication reduced or changed, as long as it brings no discomfort or pain to your dad, so that he isn't so out of it. Elderly people are more susceptible to side-effects of many medications, especially pain meds. or other meds that can cause drowsiness.
I sure hope things work out better for your dad.

Smile... it makes people wonder what you're up to!

Please identify yourself in 1st email w/name/username. Due to recent problem trades, if I haven't traded w/you before, I will probably require you send your end 1st or I'll need LEGIT trade references/feedback. I will be happy to provide the same. bumped it on the table............he was so tired from sitting there......he was getting stiff from being in same position i guess.........

all i can say......is they better be glad my brother is the one who walked in...........

as far as what the nursing director will do............she isnt much good.....we have had a couple problems that i brought to her attention.......one being..2nd shift.....if dad is

asleep when supper comes.....they didnt bother to wake him......they would leave supper sitting......and then send it back as refused.....

another time i went up to speak to the director......and a staff member was in hall......said....shirley wants to talk to u about a little problem....she didnt know i could see her

but thru the crack in the door.......i saw her stand and kinda roll her eyes......

and im thinkin..........about one more roll......and shes gonna see the real --------- come out!

i read something on a google search.....where they will pay family members to do in home care......something about 3 times the ssi check they draw

if thats the case.......i could pay someone a few hrs a wk.......but im not sure...... 5|3|Not sure if you might have been hearing about the Cash and Counseling programs that was active in about 15 states, KY being one of them....but that grant program ended in 2009 (IL was also a C&C state).....more inside.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|06:20:35|01/13/2012|

Is your dad a Veteran? He may qualify for this program

VA Aid and Attendance Improved Pension--this does pay the child of an elderly parent needing assistance with care, but not sure of the qualifiers/requirements/amount paid, etc. If he is a Veteran, check with the local VA chapter for more info.

There might be more programs out there by state....you could contact your local Agency on Aging/Counsel on Aging and ask for more info.

Also, the govt programs have very stringent requirements from what I've been reading.....and the money paid is a pittance (some people had commented online to an article that they get around $10 a day).

The best thing you could do is to get info for your state, and the programs he might qualify for.

6|3|Also, if you still need to have him living in a nursing home, the link inside will take you to the CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) website to review nursing home ratings....there is a new-ish program that give a rating, using a star system, to nursing homes....factors like staffing numbers, quality measures, and health inspections (or as they are called in the longterm healthcare world, "surveys" results).... more inside.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|06:26:21|01/13/2012|

www.medicare.gov/nhcompare

You can look by state, county, town, etc...or if you know the name of a specific facility, like the one your dad currently lives in, you can search for that too.

Read the description of what each catagory of rating factors means, as well as the overall "star" rating given.

7|1|I am sorry you are having difficulties with your dads care....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|07:54:15|01/13/2012|

Don't let staff intimidate you, continue to push for the kind of care you want him to have. I would encourage you to keep a log, and even take pictures. When they are aware that you are on your toes, and keeping a close eye on things, those are the patients who get better care.

With that being said, cna work is hard, find ways to praise those who are doing their job well and treat workers nice even when it is hard to do. Every place seems to have a few hard working angels, and if you can link up with one of them, it really helps on keeping an eye on your person.

I would try to do extra thing during my visits that would make the staffs job easier, and they seemed to notice and appreciate it. Like shaving, and grooming things, taking to the bathroom.

Praying things get better for your dad. Spent many drives home in tears, and I know how hard it is to want to do something else but not be able to.

I've always thought it made NO sense...but we've been thru this already..
asked many questions and were told no. i'm sorry for what your going thru.
It's really hard!! 9|2|no....hes not a veteran.......there are a few nurses there|couponsnsamples|cpsnsamples@aol.com|09:38:34|01/13/2012|

Posted on Jan-13-12 at 09:38 AM (Eastern) by 205.188.116.68

that has done a wonderful job......but to be honest most are lazy and dont do anything more than they have too.....

they will bathe them......shave them fast as they can......then they are covered with nicks and cuts.....so i went out and got dad a razor that cost over $100.....to prevent that problem

and still walked in and found him with cuts.....and his ele razor sitting in plain open site.......

its kinda obvious.....if you a patient with his head nearly in his lap......hes tired......and needs to go to bed.......but yet..u see it all the time.......

if he sat there all day.....without being put to bed.....then he sat there with wet diaper...all day.......and that totally pisses me off........cause to me

you know that has to be degrading to anyone..........and my dad is in his right mind..........i often say.......if u want to go to bed or something ......tell them.......

his reply is ...dont do any good...........

i dont like to stir the stink......because im afraid someone will be mean to him.........but trust me...they sure as heck dont intimadate me..........

and they better know...i will go over their heads.........

right now..im waiting for my road to clear abit......and im off to the nursing home........ 11|3|So you really are talking about aides not actual nurses If you become aware of certain ones ho you know don't |teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|16:41:09|01/13/2012|

do things right tell them that that aide is not allowed to handle your Dad I am thankfull that my Mom speaks up and if shedoesn't like yu you won't be takeing care of her again lol 10|1|What kind of insurance does he have? Does he have medicare plus an advantage plan?|lv2qpon|jcummins1@rochester.rr.com|15:54:38|01/13/2012|

Posted on Jan-13-12 at 03:54 PM (Eastern) by 72.230.176.187

Some insurance covers an aide to help with bathing, nursing etc. If you bring him home, there are things you can buy to make it easier, like a shower bench. 12|2|the problem is........he hardly ever talks since hes been in there......to us.....or to anyone.......|couponsnsamples|cpsnsamples@aol.com|18:44:38|01/13/2012|

Posted on Jan-13-12 at 06:44 PM (Eastern) by 64.12.116.68

if he would speak his mind........they would surely put him to bed...........

he has medicaid and medicare..........the thing is...if i take him out of there...........he wants to go home......not to my house...........so therefore i cannot

be the only one taking care of him......i have kids at home......

nursing director......and i have had two conversations today......first conversation was this morning.....and she didnt get to do much talking.....LOL
