I just did this for my son earlier this month.( He was just medically cleared to return to school since he left last April :)
They have really made it easier this time round.

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Since you are a first time user, a PIN will have to be created at the site. Since I didn't have to do this process as we already had a
PIN, I am not sure if it is instant or if you have to do any kind of wait.
You just pick what school year you are applying for and they do ask for the name of the college your son will attend.
All tax information can be done via the site with your permission which makes this process a piece of cake.
It is very self explanatory and each page can be saved and you can come back later.

My kids are 24 and 18 and thankfully, neither one is interested in college. Of course they could change their minds but I don't want them to go at all.
I remember doing the student aid application back when I went to college and it was just a paper form then, not at all too complicated. It sure sounds a lot harder now!

Not sure if they know where they are going to school yet but at my daughters university they give priority to the kids that have it completed by Feb. 14th so that may be something you want to check into.

you dont need to have your taxes done to fill put the form, you can put what you think is the closest $ amount in the boxes and you need to use last year's taxes the first time you fill out the form.
I will tell you to keep a print out copy for yourself as a guideline. helps make it easier each time you have to do the form. Also, dont worry to much, if there are any errors they are really good about getting back to you to fix any missing info,etc..
