We are looking to get away for 5 nights and are wondering about vacation packages. Should we get a rental car? Does anybody have any experience with Las Vegas? Looking for suggestions. Would like to do this as cheap as possible. Where to stay? Where to eat? Thanks!

Thanks!

Take a shuttle from the airport not a cab because they overcharge. Stay somewhere older, like Tropicana or Luxor because they're where all the action is but still really want to offer low prices. There are free and low cost shuttles and trams on the strip, and walking is always fun for people watching. Get on the email lists for Luxor and Tropicana because they offer super low specials. I got married there and lots of my family got rooms at Luxor for 39 per night. Just think of it this way, you're not going to spend a ton of time in your hotel, you will be out and about. If you don't want to stay on the strip, you can stay at the Golden Nugget on Fremont, it's just a different experience. Fremont does have that nice and free light show every night. As dar as restaurants, there are all kinds of places. What kind of food do you like? There is a mall on the strip with a food court for the days when you just want to eat quick and there are also some McDonalds scattered around the strip for fast food cheap options. I've been to Vegas more times than I can count so I can offer answers to basically anything you need to know. Either ask on here or on email. :) 4|1|I disagree on the rental...|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|19:03:18|01/08/2012|

While in Vegas, it makes a lot of sense to see the Hoover Dam and even the Grand Canyon. Without a car, this trip is a very long, expensive and gross bus trip and you have no control over your time. Both of these things are very close to Vegas...

The rest of the time you can walk ... however, keep in mind that these casino/resorts are HUGE so even being next door is a lengthy walk. Be sure to check out the insides of some of the resorts -- they are awesome and it doesn't cost anything to visit. The water display outside Bellagio is really cool; the gondolas at the Venetian; the longest wooden roller coaster in the US (or is it the world?) is at New York New York; I think you can see the white tigers at Mirage; if you go down to Fremont Street there is a light show that, well after 3 minutes you've seen it all, but the old-time Vegas stuff is interesting.

I agree for lodging - Tropicana, Luxor or even Harrahs and the Flamingo. Excalibur is reasonable also. Most of them have deals, so check online. 5|1|Thanks for the ideas/suggestions.|vickijo|vjdesmond@rochester.rr.com|19:57:47|01/08/2012|

We have both been to the grand canyon and death valley and the other places mentioned. Not together but me when I was younger and him when he went on a motorcycle run with the guys. We really would like to just visit Las Vegas and see what is offered there.

Any other ideas/suggestions are welcome! thanks again!

Thanks!

Vicki, NY 6|1|When renting a car, DO NOT take any extra insurance, you are automatically covered under your own insurance coverage. No matter what they tell you. You don't need to take their insurance. They will try to sell it to you. If you are uncertain, call your insurance agent before you leave for Vegas and he will tell you the same thing.|flapper|joyphalen@yahoo.com|05:38:14|01/09/2012|

And some even require valet. Which is not cool when you're watching your budget! :) 8|1|las vegas trip|ASWEENEY|tgif246@aol.com|09:47:02|01/09/2012|

You really do not need to rent a car as would be more of a pain to go from point a to point b
They have bus service which is much easier.

Flamingo is probably the best part of the strip and not on one end or the other

Stratophere is one one end and MGM is the other you can get a map online.
Circus Circus is next to that not really that great a place they have circus acts and lots of kids.
Sahara but you are way down the end and I personally do not like that section of town.

There is always downtown Vegas but not close enough to go to the strip walking Cheaper hotels downtown,

I cannot think of the name next to the flamingo that one is not too too bad.

Hooters has super deals it is the back of the strip but down by MGM we stayed there but just did that end.
New york new york, Tropicanna, MGM and lots of store coke cola, M & M.

You can do that bus I forget what that is called the day pass you ride all day for the price you can google online we did that one day just to see the other end of the strip you can get on and off all day.
Near where Bally's is on the strip in back there is a great cheap steak house I forgot the name very reasonable. We told our friends from Arizona they go to Vegas all the time and had never been to this place now they go all the time.

You can google online and find a lot of free stuff discount coupons.

We're going too! We got a good rate at the Excaliber, now I'm wondering if there is anyway to get food discounts or coupons?
Food used to be cheap in Vegas but last trip it wasn't!
We're going with 4 people who have never been. Can't wait!!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If you need one for a trip, you can always get it at the hotel. The traffic in LV is very confusing. I've been there many times, with and without car rental.

To and from the the airport: if there are more than one person togetther, get a cab. The fare is the same for as many people as will fit into the cab. However, do not let the cab driver cheat you, tell him NOT to go thru the tunnel./ That will add $5 to you fare. On the strip, fare would be aroun $10 . I was there in NOv and my fare was $15 because I stayed at a hotel several miles away from the strip. Do get the cab number, inside the cab. Report him if he does go thru the tunnel. During one of mine trips, a top exec of the cab company gave me a card and said to report any violations. They are not supposed to do that. One time, a driver did that to me after being told twice not to do it. He did not get a tip.

If you do opt for the shuttle, get a one way fare. The discount is that that great and they are not always reliable. They got your money.

Why eat at MacDonalds? There are many cheap all you can eat buffets. Also 2 meals a day is more than sufficient, you are eating all you can. Often I would have a real light breakfast, and then a late lunch buffet. Do not eat at the downtown buffets, they are not very good. Vegas casinos are divided into 3 groups: Strip, Downtown, and outer limit. I usually stay at an outer limt one, its much cheaper. and they have free shuttle bus to take me to the strip.. However on your first trip, you are better off staying at the strip. The "GOLD COAST" haas a cheap but decent buffet. free shuttle from "Bill's"(across the street from Harrod's on the strip.

There is a shuttle that runs along the strip to downtown, you can get an all day fare, usually, i would stick to the strip or downtown. Not enough time to do too amny things at one time

Coupons are available at lasvegas.com and lasvegas forlocals.com Also check the magazines in you cab, your room, and at the bell station at your hotel. 13|1|vegas bound|melf39|melf39@comcast.net|21:27:57|01/09/2012|

we are also goin to Vegas the end of the month. We have been there many times. Every time we go, things are different and there are new casinos. We go to the newest casino each time we go.

Generally, we stay downtown. Love it!!! There is a buffet we always go to called Main Street. It was always very good (cant wait to go there again). Golden Gate has always had the best shrimp cocktail. This time, we have a condo off the strip but will be going downtown alot.

Anyways, has anyone ever been in the Pawn Shop that is on TV? The one with the father, son, and grandson & friend? Going to try to check it out.

Also, we took a bus trip to Laughlin from Vegas. It was beautiful. If you need to stay out of the casinos for a day, this is a great place to visit. There are casinos there. Just thought I would add some ideas. Good Luck!!! 15|2|I love LasVegas. We golf everywhere there and it is just great! o We booked out room 2 months in advance and when we got there in vegas they didn't have our room available(we stayed at Harrah's) so we stayed in a $300 per night suite for 3 days and they charged us the same price as our discounted room would have been! We only charged up about $200 on our rewards card before our trip to vegas but the money spent before hand was well worth it!
** I posted a earlier post about vegas when someone else was asking about entertainment and food...I posted some great deals, do a search.
