Call me cynical, but this is no different than product placements in movies and tv. What is the difference between you seeing someone get 20 bottles of Tide for free than to see Dunkin Donuts coffee cupin a movie, or a Coke on a tv sitcom? There is nothing "real" about this reality show. Nothing. Its all about publicity - and there is no such thing as bad publicity (Madonna made this an artform). Safeway, Price Chopper, Kroger, etc. - they all make sure their signs are visible. And how many times has someone on this very site posted that their XXX grocery store didn't double, but it did on tv; or that you could only use 4 of a kind, but on tv they used 100; etc. etc. This show is the same, every episode. It's several carriages of "stuff", several hundred coupons, a customer with no money with them, the customer fretting and/or crying, spending entire DAYS in the store (apparently their frozen items don't defrost!). The cash register ALWAYS freaks out -- too many coupons, etc. etc. and the manager who is always smiling comes over. Sorry, but his bonus is attached to the PROFIT of the store so I'm sure he doesn't like to see this stuff leaving for free (even though they get reimbursed for the coupons, that still means people to process them). The manager always fixes it, the customer is okay because that $5 bill in her wallet will be enough afterall; her kids survive the day in a grocery store; hubby will be impressed; she will squirrel it away in her garage and because she has enough ketchup and mustard to feed the entire US for the next decade, all is well.

But, at the end of the day... what do you remember? She got Tide for free!!! And THAT is what P&G is banking on...
5|2|Well said, Robin!! And the same works for the stores that are featured on that show! I HATE that show with a passion!|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|11:23:13|01/04/2012|

I ate a WHOLE bag of salt & vinegar chips.. yep, a WHOLE bag.. boy did I ever have the runs... but I LOVED the brand and this brand didn't normally come out with coupons so I wrote the company and was very honest. I read on their bag that they offered coupons for complaints so I wrote them and told them I wasn't complaining... That I loved their chips but they gave me the runs and it was my own fault for eating the whole bag and that I would just love to have some of their coupons.. They sent me loads of coupons and also a coupon for a free bag.. So many times, you don't have to find a reason to complain, just let them know you love their product or would purchase their product more if you had coupons. :)

I thought i saw a reply to a post a while back who was an extreme couponer and was greatly defending the show. I hope they see this thread and can honestly let us know where and how they get all those coupons. If we dont hear from anyone, then it may be apparent that there is no honest way they got them.

I myself quit watching Extreme Couponing because i didnt enjoy watching some of them being rude, greedy, and apparently dishonest. I realize not all Extreme Couponers are like that but im not going to patronize a show like that.

To make the show as interesting and sucessful as possible, maybe the producers are providing all those coupons. Lol.

13|1|It's the same as buying advertising time for any show...|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|14:52:31|01/04/2012|

Posted on Jan-04-12 at 02:52 PM (Eastern) by 173.48.121.223

So, P&G says... hmmm, how can we capitalize on this stupid couponing show. I know...we will supply the show with X number of coupons. Remember, this is NOT ad lib. This is not real. This is scripted, like any other show. It is MUCH cheaper for P&G to give away 100 bottles of Tide than it is to buy advertising time. Say a 30 second ad cost $100K (I have no idea...) and it's on once. During that 30 seconds you left the room to get a drink. They didn't get to you, did they? But on the other hand, they give out coupons for free products and you see bottle after bottle after bottle go down that register belt. Subliminally, the next time you need soap, the first name in your head is Tide. That's a win for P&G. 14|1|Yes you do have answers...I've worked in marketing -- this is how it works...It is much better to give away free product coupons and get face time that way...|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|15:02:05|01/04/2012|

Posted on Jan-04-12 at 03:02 PM (Eastern) by 173.48.121.223

It happens ALL the time and you never even notice it. When I was a kid, every products name was blacked out... you never knew what products Lucy used. But you knew that Proctor & Gamble sponsored the show. At the same time, a competing soap company would not be allowed to advertise during this prime time because P&G was. So, marketing got more sophisticated and they are now able to have their cake and eat it too. One company can be an outright advertiser and the other has product placement. When you watch a show and someone is on their laptop and you see the big apple or the Dell logo -- that's not coincidence and that is not FREE. Those companies PAY to have their products there.

So, while you think P&G is shunning couponing, Barb, what they are actually doing is putting money in another location. No, you and I cannot get 15-20 coupons for Tide. No freaking way. BUT, as an advertising expense -- drop in the bucket. In effect, what P&G is doing is putting their name out there front and center so we think of them, they are supplying the show with product, and then by limiting us to 4 coupons per trip, making themselves exclusive.

Same with the stores. Kroger wants you to think you can get $1000 worth of groceries for $12. But we all know you can't. It doesn't matter. I'll bet that the Kroger chain has acquired thousands of new customers because they "want" to believe.

Don't kid yourself -- there is nothing in this show that is magic, coincidence, happen-stance. It's all scripted and planned out. But it has the desired results. For those new to couponing, it puts stars and dollar signs in their eyes; for those of us more experienced, it draws out the envy.. the why can't I do that. Why? Because without a few companies backing you and supporting you and giving you the tools to do it, no normal shopper can accomplish this on a usual basis. You may be able to do it once in your lifetime, but really... this is just a big farce. When you save $5, $10, $40 on your groceries every week, YOU are a success. When these people save $1000, they are actors!!! 19|2|I bet the TV show "Mad Men" made a KILLING on product placement revenues...whole episodes would revolve around some famous brands, even famous still today though the show was set in the early 60's!|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|15:21:27|01/04/2012|

True, I see it everywhere and the companies do pay for it, when a label is blacked out or otherwise hidden, the manufacturer hasn't paid for the placement.

Looks like Tide got a lot of mileage from a few free coupons, I can imagine a lot of companies wanting a spot on this show. 15|1|ABT electronics gave out free tide coupons when you purchased an appliance.|alz|pleasebeprompt@yahoo.com|15:05:21|01/04/2012|

Consider that when you pay $8.99 for a bottle of Tide, that it doesn't "cost" $8.99 to manufacture and ship. It's probably more like $1. So by giving out coupons, they are out $1. A 30 second commercial costs $100K... They could GIVE away 100,000 bottles and get on screen placement through out the hour long program or the same price as a 30 second commercial.

Shunning customers using coupons and giving away coupons are two totally different issues. Two totally different marketing schemes. 34|4|free coupons were relatively cheap compared to other marketing/adverstising|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|23:18:50|01/04/2012|

I live in mid-CA where is no doubling except for Kmart once in a while but thats a whole new joke and subject. One of my daughters saw the Extreme Couponing show and got the stars in her eyes. That lasted all of two weeks. She quickly found that its totally impossible to even come close to saving that kind of money on her food bill. I am lucky if i can find one good deal a week here and prices are so high, even with a coupon i wouldnt buy it.

28|2|Robin, we can just agree to disagree. P&G is NOT going to encourage coupon use. They were the first in the industry to put a limt on ALL their coupons in their inserts. They are the only catalinas that print at my store that have instructions not to use oynso catalinas on their products (attempting to stop "rolling" them into more P&G products). I am a smart cookie and understand marketing (though not the expert you are, I concede this)...but can't see this being the place P&G wants to promote themselves. P&G knows that so many people will watch the show and want to replicate it themselves, hoping to somehow get cheap or free Tide. Of course that won't happen with the coupons available but it doesn't matter. It is about perception, they want the consumer to perceive that Tide will be free when they shop too. It is a lie of course and the majority of advertising is about selling fantasy, a lie.

So Susie Consumer watches the show, is amazed and can't wait to get her free Tide either. It will have her looking high and low for the free coupon that was never made available to the masses. But she saw it on the show! It has to be real and she has to find it! Through all this, how much do you think she is thinking about Tide? Extremely smart marketing on P&G's part, not honest, but smart. Truth is that these free Tide coupons aren't around for Susie or the rest of us, P&G just wants you to think they are that generous.

As we know, the show is geared towards the shock factor and fantasy. Seasoned couponers know that most of those deals are not available to us on any regular basis. Susie Consumer doesn't know this and the manufacturer is capitalizing on her ignorance and seducing her with fantastic deals that are simply non-existent.

It doesn't matter if P&G delivers on the promises and fantasies portrayed on their show...their mission is accomplished. You'll remember Tide, you'll remember that show where they got it free. You will notice it in the store more and buy it because you need it. You may even feel somewhat of a coupon queen yourself if you save a 1.00 on it...but the fantasy never comes through. Its simply part of marketing, akin to the hotel never living up to the brochure. 29|1|*tiptoe-ing my way into this convo* Barb & Robin I think you are both right and talking about |jilda|vze4gj4m@verizon.net|21:49:21|01/04/2012|

two different things.

I agree P&G does NOT encourage Extreme couponing use. However, them calling the show and saying we want to give the shopper free coupons has nothing to do with couponing and encouraging its use. It is all about advertising which is totally different. They want the shopper to buy the Tide so it films on the tv. But nowhere on this show does it say WHERE they can get these coupons. P&G won't put out free coupons. The show is all smoke and mirrors and P&G never has to back up where the shopper got the coupons. What do they care? It isn't about you the couponer it's about you the consumer.

Posted on Jan-05-12 at 07:38 AM (Eastern) by 173.48.121.223

The coupons is pocket change for P&G. That's the bait. We, as humans, always want what we can't have. So they cleverly put a limit of 4 on their coupons. Who is really policing that? It's a store thing, if they choose to do it. P&G doesn't really care. Hell, they won't even know. When stores submit for their reimbursement, they supply their purchase order... to prove that they BOUGHT the item... not that they sold it. P&G doesn't care. THEY sold it to the store, so they already have their money. They don't care if or how the store sells the item.

So, P&G has created exclusivity, rarity.. whatever you want to call it. But the fact of the matter is, they still have a huge control of the market. Do they care if you have a coupon? No, it's just another form of advertising. I read recently that 85% of all coupons printed go unused!!! Think about that... They spend millions on that advertising knowing that most of it becomes trash or lands in the bottom of a bird cage. They don't care. It's chump change.

However, subliminal advertising -- it sticks in your mind. And that's the pay off.

None of us knows what happens after the cameras stop rolling. We are all assuming these actors bring the bags home and put them in the stockpile garage and use it. But perhaps the big Kroger truck comes by later and brings it all home.

It really kills me that everyone gets hung up on how they can get these coupons when, bottom line, you can't.

So, Barb -- I will not agree to disagree, because I do not think we are talking about the same thing!!! I'm no marketing "expert" by any means - just some really good mentors early in my life and some great professors later.

Howard - the letter idea is a good one, however, unless we had a contact in the marketing department I don't think we will get the information we are looking for. However, I do know a couple people in their IT department - I'll see if I can get an "in". 39|2|Makes me wonder|eiramnoaj|eiramnoaj@aol.com|10:09:13|01/05/2012|

just how devious P&G is. Maybe they realize that EC is not good for couponers and maybe that's something they like. They could be contributing to this show as a way to hasten the downfall of extreme couponing.

Just my 2 cents.
