Though I think most of their detectors are fairly expensive (couple of hundred dollars to over a thousand). Fisher and Minelab and White's are also good names, but again, not cheap.

There are so many detectors out there with various features designed for different types of detecting, I would think your best bet would be to go to an actual store (if you can even find one in your area) and talk to someone there who could ask you questions about what kind of detecting you want to do.

I used to have a Garrett way back when I actually had money, but I could never get the hang of metal detecting - I could never differentiate between the tone for junk and the tone for gold or silver! Though nowadays they have detectors that can actually tell you what you're digging for.

Edited to add: If you don't have a store near you to go to, the next best thing would be a metal detecting forum...people there would have a good idea of the latest, best detectors for whatever kind of detecting you're doing.
