o I just gave a good friend this past week a pair of hand made crochet bootie/sock slippers I made & a huge bag of my hba stockpile items for a christams present, she loved them! I am also currently crocheting some socks for my dear son, and giving him a big basket of food I stockpiled for him. And if I have time I want to crochet 2 pair of bootie/sock slippers for 2 little girls I know that are in need, that don't have much...Just wondering if anyone else is doing hand made gifts and stockpiles this year as gifts, since money is tight for most of us.

It was a blank journal and I took a bunch of mementos from our DC trip (maps, smithsonian photos, etc) and made a collage on the front and back sides. He goes to a lot of meetings and has to take notes and I know that seeing all of those things that we both loved will make him happy.

I'm making some little felt animals for my girls. I started needle felting (and Joy, I owe you photos and our camera took one last tired sad breath and will not work, so that's why you haven't seen them yet) and made several little animals for the G Monster's birthday and she loved them, so I will make some more between now and Christmas. M likes them too. I made koalas, panda, giraffe (he looks SO goofy), cat, ferret and it seems like there was something else too. I want to make a unicorn and a dragon (probably will have to make 2 of each so they won't argue over them) and some owls. Here is an Etsy example of a needle felted koala (made by someone else). http://www.etsy.com/listing/82392261/needlefelted-koala

I made felted soaps and sent them to my mom and my Aunt.
They looked sort of like this as they were in similar colors: http://www.etsy.com/listing/45655305/felted-soap-in-peacock-colors-and

And then there's fudge. Lots and lots of that! I shipped a bunch off to family and will make some more batches for local friends between now and the 24th.

I love crafting! It feels good to hold something that you've made yourself with your own hands and time and know that it will be enjoyed by someone else. Just like my V bag! I still have it, use it and love it! :) 4|2|Those ideas for gifts sound wonderful ladies! o I'm making my son slipper socks and he has big feet! I already used 2 skiens of yarn to make the leg part for 1 pair of socks and just opened another skein to do the feet..he wears a size 12 shoe.

8|3|Oh my...I can get several pairs out of a skein.....but I made them all anklets....except for the one pair I made for Shelly K.....those were like a crew length. It also depends on the stitch and yarn weight used.....|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|20:31:25|12/12/2011|

When I used a thicker yarn for my friends socks it took 1 skein to make her pair crew length, but with my sons I am like wow, a lot of yarn lol! I'm gonna make him some shorter socks too. I am double crocheting them.

10|5|I mainly used 8 ply acrylic, used an H or I hook depending on the size I wanted to end up with.....there were some I used a thinner yarn with, so I used a G hook for smaller sizes and an H hook for regular sizes...they were hdc stitch so still compact and warm :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|20:37:43|12/12/2011|

12|7|Ah, ok, a 2 oz skein....that's why it's taking you so many! LOL :) I use 6 oz skeins or even larger (red heart super savers are 12 oz I believe)....and when you are making a larger size like that , you might want to try a hdc but use a larger hook, like an I ....will make it go faster, use less yarn, and will still give a nice solid stitch :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:03:19|12/12/2011|

Those of you who can crochet wonderful things. Im telling myself ill learn this next year. I am left handed. Iv seen pics of Saints projects too and they are so neat!

As for making home-made gifts. Iv gone thru alot of recipes and chose diff cookies and goodies to start making maybe by the weekend. For my kids, i will just decorate my sideboard with the goodies and let them fill their owm treat boxes. I will take treat boxes to a few friends and family who wont be coming over. This year i didnt have the time and energy to make things but i have some cut outs like dolls and teddy bears that i want to stuff mayb this week to give as "huggables".

14|2|Liz, I`m left handed too. If you decide to start crocheting or knitting, you will have to reverse the directions. |driller|harj@frontier.com|21:40:25|12/12/2011|

I used to make tons of afhgans, sweathers, hats, mittens, gloves, pot holders, slippers, socks, scarfs, dollies, little dolls to slip over renuzits, etc.

But no time to do anymore. I gave away all that I made to people I cared about soo much.

I taught myself how to do it, and can do either left or right handed.

~Judy in MI~ :) 16|2|Thanks Joy, that makes sense! Will use a bigger ply next time. I am left handed but learned to crochet with my right hand, was easy for me as I have always cut with scissors|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|21:48:55|12/12/2011|

every bag is different depending on what they like. I use my home canned jams and jellies, jalepeno, raspberry, strawberry, caramel apple, grape, and spiced peach. Then I have salsa and relish I also give. I make small loaves of strawberry, and apple streusal bread, and then fudge and different candies. I put everything in a brown bag tied with raffia, it turns out looking very rustic. The nice thing with having the canned goods, you always have a quick gift to give someone.

All my kids and son in law always get a health and beauty and snack gift bag, from my stockpiles. They say this is there favorite thing. I try to find deals during the year on brands I know they like.

I did a stockpile food basket for my daughter when she got married, and for a missionary friend who just came back to the states, I think that is always a great idea. Also for my mom one year, I did a freezer meal box, so I made and froze all the meals, along with instructions and any extra ingredients needed, then put it all in a large rubber made box to wrap.

I want to do a soup basket for someone sometime. I freeze soups flat in ziplocks, 1 and 1/2 cups for my lunch, and I thought that would make a nice gift, to put several frozen soups with a large soup mug, and crackers in a basket.

quitting the smokes I needed to keep my fingers busy so:
1 hat and 12 pairs of mittens for my almost 5 year old "Ton"
3 hats, 3 pairs of mittens and matching scarfs for DG Vanessa
A knitted afghan for my Mom
a crocheted and knitted afghan for my Dad that I really wanted to keep for me, LOL. I used white yarn and did plain hdc afghan. I then chained a green chain and wove it thru all around the 4 edges and tacked it down so when it is washed it should stay nice. On the top and on the bottom, I knitted 3 sets of holly leaves and berries. LOL, I love it, not trying to be braggy! The hdc afghan took me forever and a day but it looks so neat and is so warm, just what he needs and it really is not as large as an afghan but larger than a lapghan.
Amy and I always must make each other something so I made all the pages for a strictly Christmas scrapbook. She usually does something Mackie for me to make me cry, LOL.
Also for my Mom, I made a journal jar. I had the mason jar and the material for the top. I got a journal for about a buck at Staples and I printed out the label and the journal promptings from the Christmas site I visit at the Library. This cost me all of about $3, most was for the printing costs.
Again for my Mom who is about as bored as I am I made a knitting kit for her. She used to always knit but she has gotten a little "lazy" about doing it. I got a clear binder at the $ Store the same one that they have in Staples for a few dollars and some dividers. My big cost again, was for the printing I had to do at the Library. I made sections for household items like placemats, etc, Barbie doll clothes, mittens etc. Using my 40% off coupons, I got needles, 1 set at a time appropriate sizes for some of the patterns I picked out for her. I have special yarn for Barbie so I threw some of that in, 1 pkg of yarn so she can start on mittens right away (I know she will want to and she will be with me for Christmas)and a gift card to Michaels.
3 pairs of Mittens for Anthony's Mitten tree at school and the mittens I am donating.
LOL, also cookies and I made the sugared fruit peels, will put some in with the cookies in the tins, and dang! One more thing. I made an orange and honey vodka for my very good friend Scott. It smells good.
I guess I shouldn't reallt complain about being bored, I DID keep myself busy. All of my homemade gifts are wrapped in white craft paper that is decorated with cut out poinsettias and homemade poinsettia tags. I collect just about anything poinsettia and use it all year!

About poinsettas. Wish i could give you mine, Cathie. For some reason, iv never cared for them. Last week one of my daughters gave me a huge potted one. Iv got it sitting on the back porch because i have indoor cats and they would chew on it. I did go on the internet to check if it is toxic to cats but it isnt. I love the gesture by my daughter though. I will bring it out on Christmas and then maybe see if i can plant it outside.

anything! They just make me so happy. Amy brought me a Christmas gift last week that she shouldn't have but she didn't want to keep it in her car any longer and being my child, she did buy for 50% off a complete dinner set for 8 from Pier One. I am in LOVE with it. So brightly green and red and white and happy! I have the Better Homes and Gardens from Wal-Mart set that I bought at 50% off 2 years ago but this just blows that one away. I wish I could take your poinsettia Liz, LOL. When you look at it know I am loving it, LOL!!
