19 0|0|Beware! DHA in baby formula from GMO algae|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|04:51:27|12/10/2011|

http://www.naturalnews.com/034364_infant_formula_DHA_genetically_modified.html

The story of how this state of affairs came about reveals much on how politics and profit can undermine food safety. Here's a timeline on how the word "organic" is being undermined, creating a health threat for babies who are fed with formula.

2002: Food manufacturers begin supplementing infant formula and baby food with synthetic forms of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). These polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, naturally present in breast milk, are important components of the human brain and eyes. Although the form of DHA/ARA used in infant formulas is structurally incompatible with the form found in human milk, food manufacturers market their products with the claim that their formulas will make babies more intelligent.

2006: In spite of the fact that its synthetic DHA/ARA is from laboratory-grown fermented algae and fungus through the use of hexane, a petroleum by-product and EPA-identified neurotoxin, Martek applies for organic status for its products. The USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) tells Martek its synthetic DHA and ARA does not quality as organic. Martek attorney J. Friedman ignores the decision of NOP staff and contacts NOP director Barbara Robinson to have the decision reversed.

2009: A front page Washington Post article, "Integrity of Federal 'Organic' Label Questioned" uncovers the Martek story. The article quotes Martek's lawyer saying "I called Robinson up, I wrote an e-mail. It was a simple matter."

2002-2010: Parents and medical professionals observe reactions in babies fed with products containing Life's DHA, the product name Martek gives its patented GMO version of naturally occurring fatty acids. The range of infant health problems includes difficulties breathing and gastrointestinal disorders. When affected babies are no longer fed the formula, the ailments disappear. Although Freedom of Information Act requests reveal hundreds of FDA adverse event reports, the FDA is slow to react.

2011: FDA announces it will investigate claims that DHA/ARA infant formulas support brain and eye development. The National Organic Program is now trying to remedy its 2006 decision by asking Martek to formally ask permission of the NOP's National Organic Standards Board to use its DHA and AHA in organic products.

Products Containing this GMO
In the meantime, Life's DHA is being sold in many so-called organic brands which many consumers trust. Paying higher prices for products labeled as organic does not necessarily mean your family's food does not include this particular Frankenfood. From Martek's own website, here is a list of infant formulas containing their product which is both genetically modified and typically manufactured using a known toxin:

Earth's Best Organic Soy with DHA & ARA (Hain Celestial Group)

Enfamil LIPIL (Mead Johnson Nutritionals)

Enfamil Next Step (Mead Johnson)

Isomil 2 Advance (Abbott Laboratories)

Nestle Good Start Supreme with DHA & ARA (Nestle USA)

Parent's Choice Organic (Wal-Mart)

Similac Advance (Abbott Nutrition)

Ultra Bright Beginnings Lipids (PBM Products, LLC)

There is also a long list of pre-natal supplements as well as vitamins and dietary supplements for infants, children and adults containing this product. A surprisingly wide range of foods and beverages use this GMO substance including Apple Bran Muffins sold at Starbucks; Farm Pride Omega-3 Eggs; Horizon Organic Milk; Kroger Active Lifestyle Premium Light OJ Beverage; Minute Maid Enhanced Pomegranate Blueberry Juice; Pediasure Children's Beverage; Pompeian OlivExtra Plus and Silk Soymilk. The list of products containing this GMO is multinational, with products in many countries across the globe. If you want to check whether a supplement, food, or beverage you use contains Life's DHA, the full list is here:

How can an average person REALLY have a diet with all non-GMO foods? It sucks. I wish it were easy but the only way to do it is to shop exclusively at expensive organic markets, and even then (I'm looking at you, Whole Foods) some GMO ingredients slip through the cracks. It's just so hard to afford and keep up. It's so disheartening. It's like trying to make sure your drinking water is free from contaminants. 3|2|yep and the "organic" label is owned by our gov|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|16:11:26|12/10/2011|

Posted on Dec-10-11 at 04:11 PM (Eastern) by 207.255.32.70

Which really complicates matters if the fed gov owns the organic label. So now we have products labeled as organic, priced high and aren't even truly organic!

I agree, it is nearly impossible to buy and eat food that is GM0-free, there is cross pollenation as well, even with organic farms who are really trying. 4|3|You can blame Mosantos corporation for most of the GMO`S and the cross poluation. :(|driller|harj@frontier.com|17:20:36|12/10/2011|

Posted on Dec-10-11 at 05:20 PM (Eastern) by 50.42.142.114

Very sad. Right now the state of Missouri is sueing Monsantos over cross poluation. It will drag on for ever.

My brother in law, had to quit his 36 acre organic farm a few yrs ago.

He had the state certification, but found out that with his crops being 100% certified, that also those who were not
the 100%, could still say they were. So kind of a bummer. They paid the same amount for their cerification seal,
as the next that was not the same percentage.

I have started growing much larger garden now, and
eat in season, do canning and freezing for those months that the products are not in season.

Did you know, that most companies, can say organic, but are really not? Yep. This is just a way for
them to still try to sell their products and get customers to buy. And they can also use natural, but if
you read labels, (which I read all) you would be very surprised at what is actually added. :(

Is just like when you see the front of a pkg, that says NO TRANS FATS, but then when you read the
ingred label, it has hydrogenated oils. YUKKK I refuse to eat any product that has hydrogenated
anything. But is my choice. I like to know where the product came from, where the seeds came from,
how the crops were grown, etc. Guess I am just too picky. But have no choice. I would rather be
picky, then to be sick or deathly ill from some of the additives, they are saying are soo good for you.

5|4|What I was trying to say is , just because the product has the certified seal that is stamped 100%,|driller|harj@frontier.com|17:33:37|12/10/2011|

Posted on Dec-10-11 at 05:33 PM (Eastern) by 50.42.142.114

means that it doesn`t have to be 100%. It could be 70%, 50%, etc. So very misleading, and very sad.

Did you also know that you have to deal with a bunch of bull just to get this seal?
You have to , for two years in a row, be able to provide where you got your seeds , then
have the soil tested , etc. But if it is not organic certified, they will
not check out those crops or the soil. So each person has to make their own decision on what
is best to eat.

I just found out last week, that when the product says fresh, did you also know that it was frozen
before it became fresh? Was news to me. My BIL explained how they are allowed to do this, even
though the product was frozen before it was called (fresh) He keeps up on all the farming stuff.

I love his fresh organic garlic. He has tons that he keeps in his barn to eat all winter into spring.
YUMMM

~Judy in MI~ sorry for going on about this. Is a very touchy subject........ 6|5|Judy thank you, wow lots of information|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|18:57:43|12/10/2011|

Posted on Dec-10-11 at 06:57 PM (Eastern) by 207.255.32.70

I had no idea how much goes into getting the seal and the fresh but really frozen is new to me, wow. Sigh. It is getting harder and harder to find and eat real food, what a sad situation for all of us. :(

Thank you for going on and on! I love reading about this issue and want as much information as I can get. I would love to have a garden but I can't. Hopefully if we can save enough money to buy a small cottage in the country, we can have a garden someday. My landlord now might let me have a small one, I should ask him.

The organic garlic sounds wonderful!!! Oh my I would love some of that!! If he is interested in selling me a small bit of it, please do let me know!! I would love to make sauce with that! 7|6|Well did you ever consider being creative (about having a garden)???|driller|harj@frontier.com|22:55:45|12/10/2011|

There are ways you can plant veggie garden if you don`t have space.

My dear milk lady actually rents plots at her farm. I can`t remember off the top of my head, but very cheap per footage.

I think this last season she had 25 people who planted there. Was pretty cool, and some even had extra produce to sell to
use that get our milk there. It helped them get what they wanted to plant and harvest themselves. Be creative and ask
even a neighbor for just a little sunny spot , if you can offer them $5 to plant. Most wouldn`t probably even charge you to do so.

You don`t know unless you ask. Can`t hurt....... all they can say is NO.

Well, not sure about BIL selling any garlic. He mainly just grows for them, but has more than enough all year to share. I never
run out of it. Will see, maybe when I ask him for more, and I get enough, I can maybe ship you some. He may have to start farming
again, due to his loss of job indefinetly of over 30+ yrs. very sad......... Times are tough everywhere. I am soo hoping he
will start up their farm again soon though. I soo miss his produce. They even sold to local farmers markets and had a CSA membership.

I was at this one job last year, and the gal had cancer, but started changing her diet, and now she is cancer free, but she had
to show me her indoor garden. I was pretty neat. She had it in her basement , off in one corner about the side of a double bathtub.
I was just a metal frame with like a insulated tarp, in the shape of the small building. I was shocked when she opened the door
it had three tomato plants with two tomatoes on the vine, then she also had lettuce just growing in a shallow flat and cucumbers.
She said when those crops were done, she just replanted and started all over again. Main thing she suggested is that before the crops
were totally done producing, she started more seeds. This was in the dead of winter months. Oh, she also had a light on a timer. I would
think you could build something like this just to put in the corner of any room.

I am sure you have heard of the CSA. You pay a fee for the whole growing season, and then each week you get what is ready for harvest.
Just depends on how nice the weather is, etc. These boxes were huge. So there is another option you could check into. You should
be able to just google farmers, and CSA`s for your state or area. They are popping up all over the place now. I just found one
that I could join for the winter months. They have hoop houses that they grow their veggies all winter in.

So that is two options for you to choose from the above that I mentioned. You juat have to be creative and never know until you try~~

Sorry once again going on & on. Oh forgot my BIL`S farm was/is named Garden Patch Farm in Pinckney MI. Actually you might still stumble
onto it. They also had homemade raw fermented saurkraut and my sister`s famous beef and chicken homemade bone broth. :) He can never make
enough kraut, that is how good it is. and it is only cabbage and sea salt. YUMMM I like the dark purple better than the green.

I will ask my landlord, he is generally flexible so I think I will ask him. I'd have to ask my husband if he would have time to do it too as I'm not able to do much physical work at all. He wants to have one too so if we get permission I'm sure we could.

Oh no worries on the garlic, I just thought he might sell a bit but if not thats ok! :) It just sounds so good but maybe we could do it ourselves too. I have winter to prepare for a garden if I can do it so garlic would be one of the things I would want. Thank you!

The indoor gardening is interesting too, we do have room inside. So much to learn but I'm sure I could find plenty of information online about it. That would be so neat to have a garden inside, during the winter even.

I heard a doctor on the radio talking about cancer and how it feeds off sugar and carbs. And that to starve them, just cut out carbs in your diet. I really think that would work with cancer and other diseases too, infections, etc. It is certainly worth a try. My Dad passed away with lung cancer and the worst thing was the chemo. It was end-stage and didn't help anyhow, just made his last few weeks pure misery. I don't think I would take chemo if I ever got cancer, after seeing what my Dad went through. It was just horrible, cancer is an awful way to die.

I haven't heard of CSA but will definitely google that for my area, it sounds like a good idea. Thank you so much for the information! We have to do whatever we can to eat well and I really need to check into all the options and do the research. 9|8|You can always plant in lrg pots inside and get natural light from southern window, or doorwall|driller|harj@frontier.com|12:35:15|12/11/2011|

A note about the garlic. I will see what I can do, but can not guarantee. Right now I am getting low on it myself.

I`ll see, and if I can get maybe one or two extra will LYK.... :)

But all I have to do is ask for more. I usually share it with mom & dad. Dad loves the stuff. I also take 5000mg garlic tabs
that my sister gets from her holistic doctor. So thankful for that. Can`t afford to get them myself.

Do you take any form of coconut oil???? I get it in the one gallon bucket. Between that, the raw milk & cream , farm eggs (no soy),
grass fed pork, chick & beef and of course my homemade beef & chick bone broths. I do know w/o the broth , my bones ache if I don`t
drink it everyday. Usually drink about half cup with every meal. I do it plain, but my sister adds, either or coconut cream or coconut
milk. Can also experiment of course. Something about the bone marrow that feeds your bones itself. Works wonders for me anyways.

I agree with you on cutting out all carbs & sugars. I haven`t had a soda/pop in a long time. Once in a while but when I do, it makes
me feel terrible afterwards. I have actually lost a few inches in the mid area. Which really I didn`t need to lose. I don`t weigh that
much to begin with.

Have a super day and yes, do you research. I am still learning so much not only from research but from those who have had cancer and changed
their diets, etc. Plus my BIL is such a huge help also. So thankful that I realized just how important it was to change my diet and feel
so much better w/o going to doctors, and taking any meds. I don`t even take anything for a headache. If I get one, which is very seldom,
I eat some fresh or canned pineapple or better yet, if I don`t have any pineapple I eat about two tablespoons of my raw butter that I make.
And it takes my headache away. Not sure why? But I say whatever works do it.

~Judy in MI~ Sorry for going on & on again. Just trying to give you some info and tips. You may or may not know already? :) 10|9|I do use coconut oil|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|16:32:59|12/11/2011|

Right now I have Kelapo coconut oil, I used Nutiva for years. It does help a great deal with so many things, I always keep it in the house and try to take 3 tablespoons a day. I love how it boosts your metabolism, gives you energy, kills bacteria, etc. Could go on and on about coconut oil! My doctor and I were discussing it too, about the medium chain fatty acids and their differences from other fatty acids. He said another patient was mentioning coconut oil to him so maybe word is getting around! I sure hope so, its so beneficial. I feel my best when I take my coconut oil, my hair and skin is very soft too. It is moisturizing from within, just a wonderful food for so many things.

I hadn't heard of the bone marrow but it sounds about right. I grew up on a lot of stews and soups that Mom made and we were rarely sick like other children. I used to make a lot of soups myself but haven't done much cooking due to my health. My daughter cooks for us a lot and I'm so thankful so does. I will look into the bone marrow information though and the broth, no wonder chicken broth is good when you have the cold or flu.

I do take a lot of medications, 8 different a day. If I took everything that the doctors wanted me to take, that would be 11 kinds a day. At age 30 I was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy, a virus attacked my heart, they think most likely the flu virus. As a result, I have CHF and at the time of my diagnosis, my ejection fraction was 19 and my prognosis wasn't good at all. They sent me to the heart transplant doctor but he was honest with me and told me that though it shouldn't work this way, you are poor and won't get a transplant. He advised me to do all I could to keep my own heart going, as long as it would. I don't want a transplant anyhow, should it ever come to that, I've already told my husband and children. I just want my heart to go as long as it is supposed to go. I have other health problems on top of the CHF and my cardiologist told me that when I leave his office, he has to take a long time to read my chart because my case is so complex. I shouldn't be alive right now, by medical standards. They gave me no more than five years...but that was 12 years ago and I'm still here.

So I have tried to only take the necessary medications and refuse the rest. The statins are ones I will not take at all. They give me severe muscle aches in my legs where I can't even stand or walk. And I don't believe that cholesterol is the monster they make it out to be as our bodies need cholesterol. I did ask my doctor if I could just stop all my medications and see how I do on my own, so tired of taking it all. He told me I would be in ICU in a week. I'm not going to try it out. But I do what I can with supplements and diet, the best that I can afford and it does make a difference. Another thing my cardiologist mentioned is that he wants me on 300mg CoQ10 per day. He said it is as important as the meds and maybe even more so and wishes he could actually prescribe it. He told me to make sure I had it no matter what it costs. It is that important. And it really does help, I notice a huge difference when I run out of it.

Thanks again for all your information!! I really appreciate it! :)

The ones I prefer are

Tropical Traditions >> can be bought online
Radiant life >> can be bought online ((my favorite))
Green Pastures >> can be bought online
Nutiva, some stores carry it , here spartan store and a few others
365 which is Whole foods brand

I do not recomment spectrum. It taste terrible.

So just depends what you like. If you don`t like the taste of coconut, there are other options. A few places online have the gelcaps you can take.

I prefer to eat it right off the spoon daily. I have replaced my cooking oil with it for everything, but still use olive oil as well.

Can be also put into smoothies, soups, stews, roast, or whereever. It gives you a boost of energy and also makes your skin soft from the inside
out. I used to have very dry cracked heels, but not no more. Also you don`t feel hungry as much during the day if you do the coconut oil.

Also use a moisturizer on my face. I love it.

I`m sure there are other brands, just have to buy small jars and see which ones you like for yourself. This is a form of a solid, but will melt
which it is still okay. I get mine by the one gallon container, much cheaper, but like I said try a small jar first. I prefer the radiant life
because of the texture plus is not over processed. Some are smoother textures. Really you can not taste the coconut flavor that much. I love
to use it in place of oil for cooking stovetop popcorn. YUMM

Sorry for going on & on. :)

Happy Holidays.

I hear a lot of recommendations for it and just haven't ordered it yet. Thanks for letting me know about spectrum too before I wasted money on it. Right now I have the Kelapo and it is very good. I never heard of Radiant Life, will have to check that out.

I had the very same results as you, very soft skin and more energy and because it is 100 percent fat, kept me fuller longer when I had it after a meal. I love it right off the spoon too! There is also a chocolate you can make with it, cocoa and sweetener. Hmm...I know I have that recipe somewhere. I made it a few times at first because I didn't think I would be able to take the oil by itself but I love it that way, love the taste of it. 17|13|I take Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil|Sharon|corvettelady@lavabit.com|22:01:57|12/13/2011|

I take 3 TB melted every morning before I start my meal of the day. I first read about coconut oil over a year ago by Bruce Fife - Eat Fat, Look Thin & Coconut Cures books. I hesitated at first trying coconut oil because I hate the smell and taste of coconut! Organic Nutiva & Barlean's were my first tries, too much coconut taste for me, then did some searching and found Tropical Traditions. This product was perfect and could handle the taste better than the others I've tried. I only buy this by the gallon on sale and free shipping of possible. Taking this also gave me more energy, kept me satiated longer and my skin is very soft. I also recently tried organic coconut cream with fresh blueberries and thought it tasted pretty good. I thought it would have a heavy coconut taste but it doesn't! My husband loves the stuff!! Sharon:) 18|14|my husband likes it too for skin irritation|cinda68|lacinda68@gmail.com|22:13:49|12/13/2011|

He installs insulation and gets a lot of skin irritation from working with it and uses coconut oil to clear it up, works wonders! We just keep a small container with some in the medicine cabinet, it is supposed to be good for acne too.

but like Judy said, some brands are better than others. I haven't tried all the ones she listed only Nutiva and Kelapo. ~Judy in MI~ Hey Cinda, have you tried the coconut cream yet? wildernessfamilynaturals.com has it . My sister gave me
