my doctor has always tested and treated for strep. My mom took one of her girls to the doctor, and he said they are now leaning toward not treating children for strep, but letting it run its's course. Has anyone else heard of this. Has me a bit surprised and puzzled.

My older daughter was found to have some leaky valve issues when she got real sick after her last baby was born, and the first thing that doctor asked is if she ever had ruematic fever from untreated strep as that can cause valve damage. Praying this clears up before she goes back to the doctor in January.

1|1|I've not heard of this being the new thing for strep, but I dont have small/young kids anymore either, nor have any of us had strep in several years.....I know the docs are getting away from prescribing antibiotics for every little cough and sore throat, but that is for viruses (which are not treatable with antibiotics anyway, most docs Rx them just to make the patients feel better, if you KWIM lol) But strep is a bacterial infection (streptococcus), which is treatable with antibiotics, so this is perplexing to me as well.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|20:40:32|11/28/2011|

2|1|My oldest DD( who is an adult) just had strep throat. She got antibiotics. I rue the day when a doctor tells her that she can't have antibiotics for her strep. She gets it so bad that it kicks up her asthma and she almost has to be hospitalized.|Ranalt|ainebailey@gmail.com|21:13:52|11/28/2011|

My DD has gotten strep since age 5. She has been diagnosed with Scarlet Fever at age 5.
I can't even begin to fathom this new information.

It's been about 2 years since the last time (knock wood) and she got antibiotics for it. That's just weird to me too. Here (as of 2 yrs ago anyway) if they have it they can't go to school until they have been on antibiotics and are cleared by the office to go resume their studies. Maybe it has changed around here too and I just don't know it yet... 4|1|I used to get strep once a year...|inthesticks|inthesticks@windstream.net|03:31:25|11/29/2011|

up until about six years ago. Then it all stopped. Just like that (knock on wood). Strep is NOT minor and it IS painful. I cannot imagine any doctor not prescribing antibiotics for strep...omg! As another poster stated, strep is actually in the streptococcus family...the same type of bacteria that causes antibiotic-resistant strep virus (MRSA). Personally, I wouldnt mess around with letting it "run its course". Isn't Strep Throat contagious? 5|2|I believe that Strep is only contagious to those who can get it. I was told over 25 years ago by my DD Pediatrician that only people who have a certain toxin in their body can get Strep Throat. My DD and my DH were the only two in our household of 5 who ever contracted Strep Throat.|Ranalt|ainebailey@gmail.com|11:07:19|11/29/2011|

Even if I am wrong, I cannot fathom no Antibiotics for Strep Throat.

6|3|my youngest dd had strep throat 2 times this year - antibiotics given both times, and she just got her tonsils out a week ago today due to strep so often|tonyas30|tonyas30@hotmail.com|12:00:34|11/29/2011|

The younger docs buy that overuse of antibiotic nonsense that results in a lot of needless suffering. Viruses can't be treated with antibiotics however after a virus, many develop a secondary bacterial infection that does need antibiotics. I went through this nonsense last year, had bronchitis over and over, no antibiotics until it developed into pneumonia and I was hospitalized for 3 days. And I am a high-risk patient with CHF too and still, the young doctors just know it all from reading the current medical literature, ugh. 9|2|This is an older doctor, who my mom has had for a long time.....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|14:44:52|11/29/2011|

I know they are tracking antibiotic use by the doctor and maybe the doctors are getting heat put on them by the gov, I don't know.
