Hi all,
Went to a babtism this past weekend. After the ceremony, I was talking about the priest, called him a "preacher" and my 17-year-old niece felt the need to "correct" me saying that he "was a priest, not a preacher."

Don't priests preach?

I am not Catholic, though, so I thought...well, maybe you aren't supposed to call priests "preachers."

It is not a big deal...just wondering what you guys think.

It matters to the particular church you are in but as far as scripture goes, we have One Priest, Christ.

Hebrews 8
1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

We have one minister, one priest, one shepherd and so I don't call any religious person these titles. I know they call themselves by these titles but that doesn't matter to me.

My father-in-law is a pastor and jokes about how he should be called the Most Reverend. I find it offensive when this only applies to Christ.

There is also this:

Matthew 23
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

So I want to go by scripture on this and I won't call mere men these things. I know that doesn't make for any pleasantries at a church but for me, I want to just follow scripture alone.

2|1|I was raised Catholic...simple answer is they are called a priest, not a preacher...and their title Is Reverend or Father. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|10:36:59|11/14/2011|

I am not sure why I am giving it a second thought...my niece correcting me. She was wearing jeans and an "I Love Boobies" bracelet in church, as was her boyfriend. So, I think she was a little bit more 'out of line' than me. lol
