I know they pay their own bills, but since he is/was a senator he has lifetime health care that is paid for by tax payers in their state. That last little one had severe health issues and I just have to wonder out loud if at some point it wouldn't be gods will for them to consider the health of the mother (who could be leaving 19 kids without a mother) as well as the probable health of this new life?

Okay and we all know what actions make a baby, so isn't it irresponsible to continue those acts knowing that they are taking such risks. There are other ways that married couples can show love to one another that would still prevent pregnancy. Not that I am going to spell that out here, but I am sure you can follow my thinking there...

At what point does this become hoarding children rather than having them (and I love big families, but there is just a point where common sense should kick in)?

I just can't understand the Duggar's motivations. I did some reading on the "Quiverfull" movement and that only left me with more questions! 15|2|Vanessa what is the "Quiverfull" movement ? never heard of that.|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|17:20:57|11/08/2011|

The Duggards used the pill and apparently she miscarried one of her first pregnancies and they asked for Gods forgiveness. Since then they do not use any sort of control and see it as his will.

My dad's mom passed away when my dad was just 2 & 1/2 yrs. old. She was only 36 yrs. old & died in childbirth along w/the baby. The baby was her 12th one. She was 18 when she married my grandpa & started having babies. She left behind 9 little ones (3 that we know of were either stillborn or died in childbirth) who were split up to relatives after she died. My grandpa re-married & had 8 more children, for a total of 17 kids.
I love large families & envy the closeness that siblings from larger families seem to have which each other. But I can't help thinking that maybe it's not so good for a woman's body to have quite that many babies.

I have two children but wanted to have many more. Due to my health, I couldn't have more and when I was born the doctor told my Mom I would never have children. So I am very blessed with the two I do have. If I had good health, I would love to have ten or more. I see it as the very best a woman can do with her life, to raise children and I would have loved to have a large family. 25|1|I think it's just that they take this 'having a large family' idea to the nth degree..|noway|mizzbishop@gmail.com|04:22:42|11/09/2011|

It's hard to get into a conversation about the Duggars without stepping on someone's toes. They're deeply rooted in their religious beliefs and I think we can all respect them for sticking to their personal convictions. Having a large family is an absolute blessing, However there are a few things here that seem to raise eyebrows:

Considering her dangerous pregnancy with Josie, you'd have to take great care in making sure that having another baby is even prudent/safe for Michelle. At what point does having a litter of children become hazardous to the mother? Are humans physically supposed to be having dozens of offspring? I just hope they are taking Michelle's wellbeing into consideration as well as the health of the baby. Michelle seems so kind yet very softspoken and it would be a shame if she's truly putting herself at dangerous risk because she doesn't want to disappoint Jim Bob.

Watching the show it's clear that Jim Bob and Michelle partner a younger child with an older child and that older child delegates the rearing of the younger one. Does each child truly get enough personal one on one time with their mom and dad? Obviously it's nontraditional and that is their own decision and we can't criticize, but it does call to question how much time a child really needs with their parent. Can two parents responsibly continue bringing more and more children into a household, knowing that the brunt of the day to day activity falls on their other children? Is that fair? Husbands and wives back in the day used to have very large families because they had to staff their own farms and have them help with the animals and crops. Many children had short lifespans due to lack of medical advances so they had as many kids as possible to shoot for the largest amount of survivors.

Do you think that maybe that since they've already had so many children, they can't stop now, so why not go full throttle into having as many pregnancies as possible until menopause? Where do you cross the line on that? Just because you could feasibly have one child a year per year of fertile womanhood, does that mean you are obligated to do so? There would be families with like 40 kids running around.

So I guess I'm rambling but I think that's why the Duggars are so fascinating. They really push the envelope with society and bring up all kinds things to ponder and discuss. I saw one episode where Jim Bob and Michelle were talking about what they hoped for their children as they became adults and they said that it would be lovely if they built homes on their family property...I wonder what will happen with these kids and if any will go to college or what path they will take given this nontraditional upbringing. Definitely interesting!

26|2|Something to think about. It is risky for her to have another child and I do hope nothing happens to her as she almost had a stroke with the last baby. I do hope the children aren't left without a mother. |lv2qpon|jcummins1@rochester.rr.com|16:14:51|11/09/2011|

One of my aunts had four children, a nice size family. Her daughter had 9 children, her 3 sons had 8, 6 and 5 children respectively so she ended up with 28 grand children. She is in her 90's and now has over 56 great grand children. I can't imagine having that many grand children and great grand children. So if the Duggers' 20 children have children, they could easily end up with 50 or more grand children. It will be interesting to see how many children their offspring will have coming from such a large family. Her oldest son and wife have two children, but are not that eager yet to have more. It was interesting how he said we have an announcement too, "Anna isn't pregnant." 27|1|how can you have THAT many kids and give EACH one ALL of the attention that they need?|mindylou86|mindylou86@gmail.com|16:28:20|11/09/2011|

I get sick to my stomach when I think about how I saw the Octomom treating her kids (she was on an Oprah episode last year, or the year before). THEN, Suzy Orman told her "to get rid of her extra help" to save $$. Seriously????

I think it is child abuse, really.

spend enough quality time with each child. It also seems to me that they make the older children help to take care of the younger children too much. The children should be children and not have to be parents too.

this used to be the norm. No one thought anything of people having large families.

But now because people only want 2.5 children, so they have plenty for themselves ect ect, it is thought of as being strange to have more. There are lots of kids in those 2.5 children homes that are not getting enough one on one with thier parents, they are coming home from school to an empty house every day. Mom and Dad are working and barely have enough energy left to kiss them goodnight. There are so many kids being raised by the nanny, the sitter, the tv, the computer, their friends, because mom and dad are living the american dream. We don't come down on those parents, because that is now the new norm. We come down on a large loving family who are working together to raise their family.

I have never seen this show, but hear plenty of the details, sounds like they are going out of their way to insure health and safety, ect. Babies are always a reason to celebrate.

He's always LOVED being from a big family and all of us cousins always loved have so many others to play with. Daddy is 83 now, though, and the age differences between all the children (his oldest brother was 23 when he was born) is bothering him because he feels like he's just "sitting here watching all my brothers and sisters die". On the VERY positive side though, like I said he's the BABY at 83 and there are still five of the children alive! Sandy
