Coffee protects against aggressive cancers of the prostate and breast, reports Michael F. Roizen, MD. Recent findings: Women who drank more than five cups of coffee a day had a 57% lower risk for ER-negative breast cancer -- the most aggressive subtype-- than women who drank less than one cup a day. Men who consumed six or more cups of coffee daily had a 60% lower risk for lethal prostate cancer. The coffee in the women's study was caffeinated...in the men's study, both regular and decaf coffee reduced the risk for cancer.

Simple urine test detects kidney disease, says nephrologist William F. Clark, MD. Recent findings: The dipstick urine protein test identified 90.8% of people with rapid kidney-function decline -- whose symptoms often do not appear until later stages, when the condition is less treatable and can lead to kidney failure. The test, which costs less than $1, should be given every year to people who have diabetes, hypertension or a family history of kidney disease.

The maximum dosage for Tylenol has been lowered, reports Lewis S. Nelson, MD. Tylenol's manufacturer has reduced the maximum daily dosage of Extra-Strength Tylenol to six pills, or a total of 3,000 mg, down from eight pills, or 4,000 mg. (Each pill still contains 500 mg of acetaminophen.) Reason: Liver failure and death can occur within days in patients who overuse acetaminophen.

The Pell grant college program has gotten extra funding. The program, which helps low-income students pay for college, got a $17 billion boost amid the government's recent deficit-reduction negotiations. More than nine million students have Pell grants.

Printing of $5 and $10 bills has plunged. Production of $5 bills by the US Treasury was at a 30-year low last year, and for the first time in that period, it did not print any $10 bills. Reasons: The prevalence of credit cards...and paper currency is lasting longer.

Saccharin is no longer considered a cancer cause. The EPA recently announced there is insufficient evidence that saccharin causes cancer. The EPA is following in the FDA's footsteps, which gave the sweetener approval as safe in 2000. Saccharin was linked to cancer in rats in the 1970s.

Hearing loss raises the risk for dementia. A recent study that tracked more than 600 adults for approximately 12 years found that every 10 decibels of hearing that is lost made participants 20% moe likely to develop cognitive problems associated with dementia and Alzheimer's. Rsesearchers are trying to determine whether hearing loss is really a cause of dementia or a symptom.

Dead Sea salts can be toxic. The safety of evaporated seawater depends on what was in the water before it evaporated. Water from the Dead Sea has the hightest concentration of bromide of any large body of water, and bromide can be toxic in large amounts. Recent case: After consuming three to four tablespoons daily of Dead Sea salts that he bought through a Web site, a man sought medical care because he became confused and disoriented and was slurring his speech. He was diagnosed with bromide poisoning.

Hot flashes reduce breast cancer risk. Recent finding: Women who experience intense hot flashes that wake them up at night and other severe symptoms of menopause, such as night sweats, vaginal dryness, bladder problems and depression, have up to 50% lower risk for breast cancer than women who don't have such symptoms. The protective effect increases with the number and severity of menopausal symptoms. Possible reason: The symptoms occur as hormone levels fluctuate and drop. Women who have the intense symptoms may have lower levels of estrogen. High levels of strogen are linked to breast cancer.

Curb your appetite by smelling vanilla before a meal. The aroma is satisfyingly rich and tricks your brain into thinking you are eating more than you actually are, so your body feels content sooner and needs less food.

Tomato juice helps prevent bone loss. Tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene, which reduces harmful oxidative stress that causes the body to resorb bone and damage cells responsible for bone formation. Recent finding: Postmenopausal women who got at least 30 mg dily of lycopene through tomato juice or supplements showed improved bone health.

Amazon.com has announced that it is starting a program to rent electronic versions of college textbooks on its Kindle e-reader platform. The company says that students can save as much as 80% when renting instead of buying. Books can be rented for periods of 30 to 360 days, and Kindle e-reader software is available for PC and Mac computers as well as many mobile devices.

Meditation reduces pain rapidly. Recent finding: After practicing 20 minutes of meditation daily for just four days, study participants found that meditation reduced their perception of pain by up to 57%.

Low-intensity exercise improves Parkinson's patients' ability to walk. Recent finding: Gait and mobility improved more among Parkinson's patients who walked on a treadmill at a comfortable speed for 50 minutes three times a week than among patients who walked at a higher speed for 30 minutes three times per week. 1|1|bump|inthesticks|inthesticks@windstream.net|22:58:44|10/29/2011|
