people, especially the younger people, who feel they have some sense of "entitlement" to have a good job, and to do better than their parents, etc. Sure, parents WANT their kids to have a better life than they have. Sure, kids who graduate college want to land good jobs and make lots of money. Sure, people today EXPECT things to be handed to them and given to them. But that is not what the real world is about.

These kids who graduate high school and go on to college should KNOW the possible job market they face once they graduate college. It is not as if the economy suddenly turned bad. This current economic crisis has been building for a few years now, and kids should have used a bit of foresight in their college majors...studying for jobs that the country and the world need -- not the jobs that these kids WANT to do. There are still lots of openings needed for certain jobs -- the medical field (like nurses and doctors) and research; computer-related technology jobs; eco/green environmental jobs; oil/gas jobs, the agricultural field, teachers, etc. These jobs are not being filled, as more and more kids choose easy majors like political science, philosophy, business administration, art and music design, etc. What ever happened to the American work ethic?

Kids today who get jobs really don't like them. They must not...since they come to work late (if at all), they spend their worktime yapping on their cell phones or texting their friends, they don't have a sense of responsibility or loyalty to their companies, the people in customer service jobs ignore their customers, or are rude to them, or have overrated expectations, etc.

It's not any one President's fault that the US is in the current economic mess. Fingers can be pointed at Obama, and George W. Bush both. Why not place the blame on Big Business, the US banking industry, Big Oil? Why doesn't the US voter hold politicians accountable? After all, We the People voted them into office to carry out the People's will (religion not included). Until Americans have the backbone to finally stand up and demand change, instead of simply snoopying about it, the US will continue to stagnate and backslide. No good change comes without effort! 2|2|I agree w/ much of what you posted except the part about nurses being in high demand.....there is a glut in that market right now, new grads arent finding jobs in nursing either....blame it on the colleges/community colleges for churning out nurses faster than the market changes or grows....if anyone today would say to me they wanted to be a nurse, I'd point them in the direction of being a physical or speech therapist, or a dietician.....now those are in high demand.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|06:12:04|09/29/2011|

3|2|Oh, and the other thing is that an employee should only be as loyal to the company as the company is to them.....and in today's working world, that sure isnt much.....|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|06:13:20|09/29/2011|

first..there is a shortage of nurses (at least where I am here in Northern IN) in home health. I only have the nurses I have for help because "I" knew them not due to agency finding them. Obviously the agencies dont' pay what the hospitals due but I know for a fact what agencies get in return for even Medicaid pymt and they still make a killing from that but want to pay nurses lower pay than what they need/can do. Nurses have to be in home health for the 'love' of it unfortunately..having a 'one on one' patient versus many in hospital etc etc) It's not just here in my rural area as my friend lives in a larger city in NW Indiana and she can't get help for her daughter either, especially the overnight shift for both of us. (Every agency has admitted it can't find help for us) Most agencies require at least 1 to 2 yrs of a nurse already being out in the field with work experience in hospital etc before they will hire as well so that shoots someone in the foot right away from getting a job in home health right out of college.

As for not wanting to work, yeah..the gov't is a big part of it not letting the parents discipline their kids anymore. There is a BIG difference between child abuse and disipline. Kids have zero discipline these days and everything is given to them on a silver platter so they have never been taught good work ethics. Why take care of something (toys, car, clothes,..whatever..) when Mommy & Daddy will just go out and buy them a new one if they destroy the ones they have. Mom and Dad buy the car (typical cases..there are always exceptions to the rules of course), pay for insurance, gas, tires, upkeep, clothes, food, you name it. My one daughter was on disability (due to health) for a short while..she could still get it if she wanted it but chooses not to. She made up her mind she did NOT want to be on it and found job(s)(she sometimes works more than one)and today she is a manager at McDonald's. Not the best job, but she works steadily and has plans to better herself in the future with better job and education etc so it's a start. She still struggles every day with her health issues but it's all in your attitude and how bad you want to make it happen etc.

I agree..employers are the pits as well these days. In my parents day you knew if you had a job you could count on it for life and were rewarded for being a long time loyal employee. Now employers plot to get rid of you once you are 'middle age' so they dont' have to pay out retirement benefits or disability etc. I was raised with a work hard ethic and where did it get me after a dozen years with that company and giving my 110% everyday to my work? No where. I will get something like $150 a month retirement from them (maybe..if they dont' go belly up before I am able to collect it) ..yippee skippy. That won't even pay my electric bill and that is before taxes!

Just a sad sign of the times these days. I am glad I grew up in a era where it was like that Rascal Flatts song.. "sitting on the front porch, drinking ice cold cherry coke..everything in black & white...... people pass by watching the world go by". We knew our neighbors by name..everyone helped each other and watched out for each others kids etc. Was a good time to grow up in. Now people can live in the same neighbor for years and never know their neighbors and maybe it's your neighbor who ends up harming you or your family..stealing from you etc. Sad, sad world.... 5|4|Kathy, what you are personally experiencing is driven by circumstances or specifics.....your location, smaller area, home care case, etc....but all in all there is no shortage....I direct you to allnurses.com to read the dozens and dozens of posts by graduated nurses in the past year or so who can't find a job, months or even a year after they graduate.....it is a wide spread issue, but you will find 'pockets' of geographical locations or areas of care that might have a little more need....but all in all, nursing is really not the thing to go into right now...the 'nursing shortage' of the 80s' and early 90's is no longer, at least for now.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|07:39:10|09/29/2011|
