I was just wondering what people do when they incur huge medical bills that are not covered by there insurance? My brother is i th hospital and wnet beyond the stay allowed by his insurance looks like he will have bills totally about $20,000.00 He has a house, retirement money etc so what options do people have in this case? Thanks in advance for your experiences or you can email me at saving4spending@gmail.com

We have OOP expenses stemming for 3 ER visits and a surgery this year. Kaiser (and probably the other hospitals) have what they call Medical Assistance Program. When they mentioned it to us, we thought "Well, we aren't low income" so we almost didn't apply for it. We finally went ahead and looked at the info and were quite surprised at the thresholds. For instance, in CA for a family of 5, you had to make less than $77,000/year. Anyway, we applied and not only did we qualify and have our bills wiped out, but they covered us for the rest of the year-medical ER/clinic co-pays/medicines. We were really surprised.

We do not own a house and I don't recall if they asked the question on the form.

Oh and this is not through collections. It's through hospital billing dept.
