In his case, it was for major depressive disorder. The only side effect that I can recall is potential memory loss.

For my husband, it was a last resort in that nothing else was working for him. From what I remember, ECT can have positive results....but it's probably not used all that much because of the stigma attached and all the choices of pharmaceuticals that can be used these days. He ended up not having it though, so I can't tell you if it works from first hand experience.

Try googling for more information from medical journals or forums. Praying it works for him or he can find an alternative treatment. :)
