* Olive oil may protect against strokes, reports nutritional epidemiologist Cecilia Samieri, PhD. Recent finding: People who frequently use olive oil in cooking and salad dressings are 41% less likely to experience strokes than people who don't use it at all. Olive oil has disease-fighting antioxidants and healthful monounsaturated fat. It also may be protective because of the "substitution effect" -- it is used instead of harmful fats.

* A dangerous weed can cause blisters and blindness, warns environmental spokesperson Lori Severino. There have been increased sightings of giant hogweed, wich has large clusters of small white flowers that emerge in early summer. Contact with the sap -- which can occur if you brush against bristles on the stem or break the stem or leaves -- can cause severe skin and eye irritation. Information: www.dec.ny.gov (search for "Giant Hogweed").

* A common home-building material may cause cancer, warns Richard J. Shaughnessy, PhD. Formeldehyde typically is found in wood, particleboard and other wood composites, such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) used to make furnishings and in housing construction. It has been officially identified by the National Institutes of Health as a possible cause of cancer. Self-defense: Buy formaldehyde-free products, such as ones made of solid wood, or products labeled ULEF (ultra-low-emitting fomaldehyde). The half-life of formaldehyde emissions is about one year, so if products have been in your home for many years, current off-gassing may be negligible.

* Japan's earthquake shifted Earth's axis by about 6.5 inches and shortened our day by 1.8 microseconds. The change in the distribution of the planet's mass likely caused Earth to spin a bit faster, shortening the time it takes to rotate each day. Researchers say that such changes in Earth's rotation happen frequently as a result of earthquakes and changes in atmospheric winds and ocean currents.

* $1 billion in unwanted dollars coins sits in vaults in Texas nd Maryland. Americans have never liked using dollar coins -- but the coins must contiue to be minted at least through 2016 because Congress passed a law mandating creation of a coin series featuring all the US presidents.

* New dental imaging process increases radiation exposure. New cone-beam CT scanners, which provide 3D images of the teeth, roots and jaw, emit much more radiation than conventional dental X-ray techniques that provide only 2D images. The benefits of the new scanner have not been adequately proven except for a few specific diagnostic tasks, yet many orthodontists and other dental specialists now use them.

* Dishwasher detergents don't clean as well as they used to. New detergent formulas lack phosphates, chemicals that were good for cleaning but bad for the environment. For cleaner dishes: Tablets or packets tend to clean better than gels or powders. Run the hot water tap for a minute before turning on the dishwasher -- the dishwasher will start out with hot water, which will dissolve the detergent at the start of the cycle. To remove the white film left by phosphate-free detergents: Put two cups of vinegar in a bowl on the bottom rack of the dishwasher with the film-covered dishes and let the machine run a cycle without detergent before washing dishes with detergent to get rid of the remaining vinegar.

* Long work hours may harm your heart. Recent study: People who worked more than 11 hours a day had 67% higher risk for heart disease than people who worked seven to eight hours a day. If you work long hours: Decrease your risk for heart disease in other ways, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

* Prunes relieve constipation better than psyllium. Recent findings: Daily consumption of five or six prunes relieved constipation more effectively than daily use of a tablespoon of a psyllium laxative, such as Metamucil. Psyllium is mostly soluble fiber, while prunes contain both soluble and insoluble types of fiber, as well as a sugar alcohol called sorbitol that has a laxative effect. These differences may account for prunes' greater effectiveness. There also is a phychological component -- prunes have been used for so long as a constipation remedy that study participants may have expected them to be effective, making them work better.

* Avoid using airplane restrooms. They are rarely sanitized during flights and often are infected with E. coli and other harmful bacteria. If you have to use the bathroom, use a paper towel to open and close the toilet lid...turn faucets off and on...and open the door. When you get back to your seat, use sanitizer to disinfect your hands.

* Ask to be tested for an abdominal aortic aneurysm if you are 65 or older. An abdominal aortic aneurysm can develop over decades and may cause no symptoms. More than 15,000 Americans die from these aortic aneurysms each year. Ultrasound screening and CT or MRI scans can detect an aneurysm before it ruptures, when it can be surgically repaired. Men are more likely to get them. High blood pressure and smoking raise the risk, as does age and family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

* Chia seeds are good for you. They provide healthful omega-3 fats, fiber, protein, calcium, iron, zinc and other minerals. They may slow the absorption of sugar and help reduce cholesterol. Add the seeds to cereal, oatmeal or yogurt. You can buy them at health-food stores and online.

My grandpa had cancer, all his neighbors had cancer and even his dog had cancer. They lived in a manufactured home community and apparently they have Formeldehyde in the building products used to make old manufactured homes. It seemed like everyone in the neighborhood was affected.
