Has anyone here just stopped taking their cholesterol meds w/out the dr.'s ok?
Were you taking a statin or ?

My mom currently takes Pravastatin, a half a 20mg. tablet once a day, but it's getting to be where she's miserable w/stiffness & pain in her legs/knees & muscle weakness/pain in her arms, a side effect from statins. She also takes a 325mg aspirin once a day. Before the Pravastatin she was on Lovastatin. She's thinking about just stopping taking it. She likes to be active but it's getting to be hard & painful for her to move around, just getting up from sitting hurts.
I most certainly don't want her to have a heart attack or stroke but I hate seeing her so miserable & am thinking/hoping the aspirin she takes daily, in addition to her bp meds, would help decrease the risk of a heart attack or stroke if she does stop taking the cholesterol med? The last couple times her cholesterol was checked, it was good.

I'd appreciate some input please. Thanks! :)

1|1|She SHOULD talk to her doctor. This is a side effect that should be reported right away. I had this, when I was on one medicine. All it took was a change to another medicine, and the stiffness went right away. But either way, I would always check with a doctor first. Better safe than sorry. I got the very same side effects, was horrible and I couldn't function at all. I can't even tolerate the smallest dose of any statin. I don't worry about cholesterol these days now anyhow, its not the danger sign they make it out to be. Definitely call the doctor, for me the price of taking a statin was not worth a lower cholesterol level. 4|1|Are there better/safer ones than statins?|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|20:08:58|08/12/2011|

She goes in for lab work, to check her cholesterol, etc., on Mon. I usually go w/her in for her appts. but I've told her she has to stress to the dr. how she's feeling, how much she's really hurting & that it's slowing her way down.
She has Tramadol to take for pain but it makes her woozy more than anything so she doesn't like to take it, even a half a tablet. Aleve helps so she'll snitch one of those sometimes even tho the dr. doesn't want her taking that as it's not good for the kidneys.
I just don't understand the point of cholesterol meds which are supposedly to help save someone's life if it's making that person's life a living hell w/so much pain. It's ok to live *supposedly* healthier longer even if it means living out those years so miserably in pain? I don't see the logic in taking a med that causes so much suffering. :(

No matter what the age of a person -- they should ALWAYS contact their doctor if they are having any problems with their medicine's. No one should just go off an drug unless they talk to their doctor first.

I walk 4 miles in the am, 5 days a week and my legs felt heavy and dragging..Could not walk well so I told Doc not to refill..she wanted me to go on Crestor but I objected, at least for now..Not sure how Crestor will do but I might try it the next time around if I don't like my numbers

12|3|I didnt mean it that way, Teresa.....but medications in seniors have quite different effects on many of them than a younger person, thus making her age an additional factor.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|12:05:30|08/13/2011|

I know that older people are at a higher risk when talking about medicine. I was only repeating what was told to me by a friend of mine that is
a doctor.

I have even known YOUNG stroke patients (mid 30's) that would try and get of med's and they were advised not too. Was just trying to send
out an FYI - which was given to me, that's all.

Having taken care of both my parents in their senior years, I know that some meds can affect the elderly differently than those who are, for example, 20-30 yrs. younger. Their bodies change over the years developing a different amount of tolerance & resistance to health issues &/or injuries as well as being more susceptible to the side-effects & potency of some meds than someone of middle age.

ETA a good exmaple: Both my mom & I have to take a daily 325mg. aspirin & the once a week bone pill Alendronate (Fosomax). My mom easily gets bruising spots on her arms & legs from the Aspirin's blood thinning properties while I get none of that. W/the Alendronate, my mom has a queasy stomach & reduced appetite for 2 days afterwards where I have no problem w/it despite my having acid reflux (probably in part cuz of the Oemeprazole I take as well). But it just goes to show that some meds affect the elderly differently than someone 30-40 yrs. younger due to the differences in a body's tolerance.

And Joy, you & I have had many, many conversations over the years so I know you're aware of my mom's age & some of her health issues.

I do so appreciate everyone's input as I feel it's helpful to hear from a number of people to kind of gauge how things affect each one. I know some have no problems w/statins or other meds while others have not-so-good reactions or side-effects. I think things like this are good to discuss w/others as we don't always remember to ask or get ALL the info we should from drs. or pharmacists. Certainly we don't get all the info we should from the pharmaceutical companies or the FDA.

I think the side effects of the medication are just as risky, especially for the elderly.

My elderly neighbor switched herself from statins to a fish oil supplement, and that lowered her cholesterol. Sadly, though, she never did fully recover from the side effects of the statins, and IMO that contributed to her death.

I've never heard of it before but it is an auto-immune disorder.
My mom had lab today & her cholesterol levels are good but the dr. ordered a test for the PMR as her symptoms seem to be pointing in that direction if not from the statins. We'll know the results in a couple days. She didn't take the Pravastatin Sat., yesterday or today & the dr. did actually tell her today NOT to take it til she hears back from the PMR test.
I guess I'm kind of hoping it's only the Pravastatin causing her the problems cuz if her blood tests positive for PMR, she's looking at treatment being a year of steroids which can be risky for someone her age.
Please pray it's just the Pravastatin causing the pain/stiffness & that she'll be feeling better soon. Thanks! :)
