37 0|0|Oh no, my electric bill is DOUBLE from last month! Yikes!|couponshelmd|couponshel@comcast.net|14:16:20|08/08/2011|

Just opened my electric bill ... thought they didn't credit last month's payment. Going over the bill, they are showing that we used twice as much electricity this month compared to last... our bill is $268.xx which is outrageous! Not sure how I am going to find that money in our budget :( Times are scary, I have been so careful at the grocery store (more coupons for sale items, stockpiling when it makes sense/ceents, switched to store brand on a bunch of stuff, bought my coffee on Amazon with my codes + free shipping), accepting free produce from anyone with a garden and using google to find recipes for stuff I don't normally cook, etc. Gosh, it's hard to catch a break.

we actually would shut our A/C off for periods of time and leave to give the old central air a break... and go away somewhere else that is air conditioned. However, I know that it was running very hard due to all the hot weather.

Was trying to find a day that I can hold a yard sale, thinking that might make up some of the difference in my budget!! Best wishes to you when you get your bill :) 3|1|I'm afraid of what mine is going to be as well. :(|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|14:46:36|08/08/2011|

My meter is right where I can see it everytime I go outside & I've already used more than double the kilowatts from last billing period, & we have another week yet to go before it's read for the new bill. :( Except for maybe 2-3 days, the whole month of July was pretty rough.
This summer's high temps & high humidity is going to take quite a chunk out of all of us. :(

I was just shocked that it was so much higher than the previous month. We have been watching our other electric usage trying to off-set the A/C, such as using the crockpot, toaster oven, and outdoor grill instead of the oven and cooktop; and trying to get the kids to turn off lights, etc when not in use. I guess it was just inevitable. I am going to check for that charge mentioned above, as it may have increased as well and I need to research that part. but I think that was a huge part of the bill.. it has been way too hot to turn the A/C off overnight or you just felt like you could not breath. My husband is an auto tech and his garage is sometimes 110 - 115 degrees during the day, he needs it to be cool enough to get some sleep at night.

If it were just me, I would tough it out overnight lol. I know I am not alone on this topic and appreciate being able to vent my frustration here!!! tnx!

We couldn't even get a break from the warm temps & heavy air at night.
Most nights the temps barely got below 80° w/the humidity & dew pts. still pretty high so it was too unbearable to turn it off even at night. :(
We're FINALLY getting a much needed & oh, so welcome break now thru the rest of the week w/temps in the mid to upper 70's w/very low humidity/dew pts. during the day & temps dropping down into the lower 60's mid to upper 50's at night. Today has been just beautiful out w/a nice breeze to boot!
One word sums it up - Aaaahhh!

During the day, I can put it around 72 as the building has a lot of trees around it. But I am not very active. Outside I like temps between 35 and 65. I love spring, fall and winter. Heat summer and all the bugs too. 22|1|I saw a few people that either turned their a/c off or turned it way up at night or while they are out for the day AND|littlewolf|CCsuterlab@aol.com|23:46:59|08/09/2011|

that is not as much of an energy saving as you might think it would be. When you turn the a/c off or way up, your home "warms" back up which makes the a/c unit work even harder to cool it back off. My a/c repairman has told me to set it at one constant temperature and leave it there. I was in the habit of turning it off and/or way up as well BUT have noticed a HUGE difference since I listened to his advice.

Just a thought :O) 23|2|I agree with littlewolf...|inthesticks|inthesticks@windstream.net|00:05:06|08/10/2011|

the worst thing to do is constantly raise your temperature and then lower it. It makes the unit work extra hard to "cool the house back down" once you've let it get too hot.

Always keep it at a reasonable temperature. 25|4|I dont use AC for that reason|eyecandy007|winelover0907@yahoo.com|08:33:20|08/10/2011|

Plus, what I commented was that lately we were not able to turn it off overnight.

It makes sense to me... if it gets cooler outside than our program, I turn it off. In the morning BEFORE the house heats up past 78 degrees, I click the A/C (on a program) on again. I don't see any reason why this would make our central air worker harder. This is the first huge bill we have ever gotten.

I do appreciate the opportunity to vent, thanks! I guess I am just not as smart as some of you. 29|3|Shel, I understand all too well about the HIGH a/c bill because I am the same boat with you because of the extreme heat.|littlewolf|CCsuterlab@aol.com|11:18:08|08/10/2011|

You commented that you did not see why it would make your a/c work harder if you turn it up or off at night. Here is what was explained to me by my a/c guy: When the a/c is off or turned up, the walls and things in the house heat up so that it takes it longer to cool them back down than it would to maintain them at one temperature.

For example you mentioned that you set it at 82 at night but at 78 during the day, the temperature in the house is "fluctuating" so that the unit has to work harder in the day time to cool it back down. If you keep it at one temperature, the a/c unit will maintain that temperature and not run when not needed.

I did not completely understand what my a/c guy was telling me in the beginning about the fluctuating temperatures BUT listened to his advice and it helped a LOT with cooling the house. I use the same thought process in the winter and leave it set at one temperature.

Hoping for all of our sakes that it starts to cool down SOON!! 30|4|I agree & think this is great advice.....|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|11:39:29|08/10/2011|

Posted on Aug-10-11 at 11:39 AM (Eastern) by 207.190.75.151

I was told the same thing years ago by my heating/cooling guys. It works the same way for using the furnace to heat your house as it does for using the a/c to cool your house.
There are so many "energy saver" news articles tho that claim in winter you should turn your thermostat down while away from home or sleeping, & to do the same, turning your a/c off or up in summer. But it actually uses MORE energy if you keep turning the thermostat up/down than to leave it at the same setting all the time. Whether you're using your furnace to heat or your a/c to cool, it will run more often, using more energy, til it reaches desired temp if you keep turning it up/down. Leaving it at the same setting works much better to maintain the desired temp AND saves more energy.
When a heating/cooling unit is at the desired temp, the thermostat senses this & the unit simply will not need to run as often to get there. That's why thermostats are usually located on walls inside the home that are away from doors or drafty windows & out of direct sunlight.

If I had to live anywhere with high humidity I am pretty sure that my summer cooling bills would be $400! I sweated off 6 lbs in 5 days, LOL! When I left home I thought our 90 degree weather was hot, but today I ran all over the place in 90 degree weather and was comfortable. That gave me a good perspective.

Kristy if you see this, I'm sorry we didn't get to meet up too! I'll send you a message on FB soon, been swamped trying to get everything in order as we leave again for Jason's family reunion and on the heels of that we go to Sacramento for my dad's memorial. I need more hours in the day!
