33 0|0|what will my daughter need at the hospital - any suggestions?|funder|kathleenrch@aol.com|16:36:12|08/03/2011|

Hi,

Hope I might get some help -- it has been 31 years since I was in maternity and that was back in the day when you "stayed in the hospital for almost a week"

My daughter is due w/ my 1st grandchild (a little boy) on Sept 24th and my Daughter in law is due Nov 11 with my 2nd grandchild-sex unknown lol

My question is Iam making up giftbags for the girls to take to the hospital with all the personal products they will need for there short stay (the usual items TB/Tp shampoo etc ) Is there anything you can think of outside of this that I can get for them - something the hospital doesn't provide but from experience you might suggest.

TIA for your time...I really appreciate it

cathie

o A package of pads, so I didn't have to wear the ugly girdle thing with the hospital pad attached, she also brought me a really nice long pajama gown to wear instead of having to wear a hospital gown. She brought me magazines and books too, and a pair of slippers.

A hairbrush
Healthy Snacks (I got sick of graham crackers!)
Deodorant
Q-Tips (I personally can't imagine life without Q-tips!)

Items for the baby (like little nightgowns with the things that fold over their hands to keep them from scratching themselves) -- it gets cold in the hospital.

Magazines to read

If breastfeeding and new to it.... a book about breastfeeding

Oh... and after delivery... the hospital had pads with ice in them... you bend them which breaks the middle and they get cold... these are the best ever when you are so sore! If they aren't given to her, ask if they have them at the hospital. Especially if she tears and has to be sewn up!

Also, let them know that it's ok to not let everyone in right away! I would have preferred to have pulled myself together a little before they just let everyone run into the room... the room hadn't even been cleaned yet and I was a mess after 30 hours of labor! Some time to brush my hair, have a sip of water and maybe put on a little lipstick would have made me feel so much better before I saw everyone!

I didn't need much... but I didn't get to pack myself either! I went into labor almost 4 weeks early and my sister ran to my house in the middle of the night and grabbed a bunch of stuff for me! I don't even remember what she brought. I think I spend 23 hours in the hospital total! 6|2|Laurie was that your first baby that came 4 weeks early?|funder|kathleenrch@aol.com|18:49:39|08/03/2011|

He was due August 16th and he was born July 18th! It was a difficult pregnancy and I had two miscarriages prior to having him. I was just put on bed rest on a Friday at like 6 pm and within a few days I went into labor and they couldn't stop it. Luckily, the said he appeared to be full term... although he's always had issues since he was little... I think it was because he was early. I know the dates weren't off because of the miscarriages... everything was timed, so there is no way I was off a month! 28|4|Oh Laurie, what a traumatic pregnancy. I am happy for you that even with his issues you brought your baby home and there is no greater miracle. I worry about my daughter (I don't tell her this) she also had two miscarriages before this and she is not having a stellar pregnancy. In her fourth month she started with deep pelvi pain that turned out to be ligaments. As she goes further the pain gets worse--we have 6-7 wks left to go and she has not had a good nights sleep since this pain started. She is still working FT but I can see she is getting frustrated and scared. Doctor says baby is fine and all is good. |funder|kathleenrch@aol.com|14:24:56|08/06/2011|

4|1|Snacks! Change for the snack machine too. If they're going to try to nurse, you could get them a nursing night gown. Hospital gowns aren't great for that... hard to snap/unsnap while trying to hold a baby in the nursing position ;) Also, gum is good, hair brush, hair ties, trial sized shampoos/conditioners/body washes.|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|18:39:12|08/03/2011|

I will chime in with everyone else, and say pads, the overnite kind are a must. The ones the hospital gives you are god awful.

Also snacks. I remember, my mother brought me an 8 pack of keebler peanut butter and crackers, and I thought they were the best things ever.....LOL!! Hubby appreciated them as well.

Shampoo, conditioner, etc is also great.

a mirror, to fix there face from bed. I had a c-section, remember wishing I had one.

o They were wonderful to use! They gave me a huge bag of them when I left the hospital, I didn't use them all and when my friend had her baby her hospital did not carry the cold pads so I gave her a whole bunch of what I had left. Not all hospitals carry those kind of pads.

even think of this yet, my daughter is due in about 5wks they still give you those pads that you have to attach instead of regular ones have to make a note of that. i remember eating a ton of candy but i know i didn't 'stay for a week and my girl is 29. she is also having natural childbirth i'm for pain killers if needed so is her husband's mom this is such a fun time 17|2|now your daughter is trooper 'ole naturel I did it 4 times "only" because no one offered me the wonder drug of today, the epidural!!! I have one due on the 29th. I did the gift bag thing last time, fuzzy soft sox, like the ones with lotion in them, snacks for sure, and something dad would like too, puzzle book, or light read, I got my daughter one about sisters when she was having girl number two, good smelling shower gel, for that first, I can't wait to take a shower moment. One of my daughters favorite things is those swaddle blankets you can buy, I can not think what they are called, but they have velcro on them, looks like they are in a straight jacket, but she loved having it there right away for baby.

Maybe those are more for "going home"? But also, new underwear as it's most likely all of the ones she wore while pg are either stretched out of shape or are maternity so will no longer fit very well when she returns home.
If she will be breast-feeding, keep in mind that everything mom ingests goes into her breast milk & some foods/snacks/beverages & candy will probably not go over too well w/the baby. Especially chocolate (caffeine) or anything that could make the baby gassy/colicky, like acidy juices.
She might also appreciate a "donut". I don't know if hospitals provide these anymore or if it's something you have to pick up yourself, but they're a Godsend for moms who've had a vaginal delivery. Cushions the bum while keeping the pressure off the sensitive areas. If you can find even a round, inflatable pooltoy (about the size of a round toilet seat) w/a hole in the middle is better than nothing. Just inflate it enough to keep pressure off the sensitive areas.
:)

They probably give you this in some sort of a "welcome to the world packet" after the baby is born but when I was pregnant, TWENTY SIX years ago, our nurse told us to bring baby powder. When you're having contractions a little baby powder and a gentle rub on your tummy sure feels good! S
