Is there anyway he can do without any deodorant for a few days until this heals up? He could wash and dry the armpit area 2-3 times a day (make sure it is dried really well), and only apply one of the two topical ointments. Since it seems to you to be a reaction to something in the new deodorant, I would go with the cortisone. Apply it each time he washes and dries the areas, just apply it thinly, rub it in pretty good, there shouldnt be a thick layer.
Have him wash and dry the area before bedtime and apply the cortisone again. So, once in the morning, once sometime in the middle of the day, and once again at night before bed.....and no other greasy ointments or lotions during this time.
Also, if you dont see improvement in a couple days, maybe 3 at most, I would recommend you take him to the doc.

HTH!

My son got a real red irritation under his arms when he didnt apply deodorant real good, his arm pits got real red and irritated, I had him put powder on his pits to keep them dry and after it started to clear up, i bought him an anti persperant deodorant and that keeps him dryer then the glide/roll on deodorants do...good luck with this problem I know my son said it was very painful and it looked painful
