Oatmeal (sprinkle w/cinnamon & a little sugar) is great for helping to lower cholesterol but it's also important to cut way back on the consumption of store or bakery-bought type stuff like sweet rolls, cookies, donuts, etc. That stuff is nasty for cholesterol & fat. Cookies aren't so bad but Angel Food cake (add a scoop of your favorite ice cream or yogurt, or some fresh fruit on top) & fruit is the best for curbing the sweet tooth w/out all the cholesterol in the other bakery type sweets. Also, reducing fat/grease consumption will help quite a bit. Avoid eating the fat/grease on red meat as well as the skin on chicken/turkey. Eating more fish is great as it's heart healthy to boot. Broiled & steamed fish is better than batterfried.
Call me crazy but when I make a hotdish or casserole w/cooked, crumbled hamburger, I run hot water over it when draining to help get as much grease off as possible. LOL I literally cannot stomach a greasy hotdish.

When it comes to cholesterol, you not only want to reduce the bad cholesterol but you also want to increase your good cholesterol.
These are just some things I've had experience with, my own & my mom's, so hth. :)

I had to change my diet due to high cholestral. I only eat cooked turkey-chicken and fish. Been 3 years now, no meds for it. oatmeal for breakfast and a banana. Sometimes I have oatmeal for dinner at evening meal. No perserved food. All original.
