I have a question and where is the best place to ask but on here!! My daughter is 9 yrs old and getting close to the age of starting her period. I need to know what is the best pads and/or tampons to get for her. Is there a special brand or anything that is made specially for teens? I know that someone on here can help so any advice would be great from any teenage moms here.

Thank you in advance,

My oldest daughter prefers Always (thin) and other brands are okay too but thin is the key word there.
You can sign up for free samples for Stayfree (being girl kit) which comes with a nice little package and coupons.

and when I signed her up for Girl Scout camp one of the questions they asked was if I've had this talk with her.......I haven't yet.....I just don't even know where to begin....

I'm hoping and praying I can squeek a few more years out, but it seems as if they are getting it younger and younger....

If you don't mind my asking, when did you begin talking to her about it??? 4|2|Same here.|kids91911|hodgesamy@ymail.com|07:38:51|06/22/2011|

I haven't had the talk with her yet! I am planning on doing it before she goes back to school. She is also a girl scout and is going away to camp after we get back from vacation. I am nervous but I know I can do it. I already had the sex talk with my 2 teenage boys. Wow did they have questions. 5|2|This is the easy part.....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|07:43:37|06/22/2011|

the attitude is the hard part, I think pms start first lol. As far as age, I think the easiest thing is to start giving them hints very young, then keep adding on information as they age, then it is not like you are shocking them with all the info at once.

when my cousin was 10 she started had NO clue about what was going on
she goes running out to my granny's house and she thot she was dying
scared her to tears and granny had the worst time getting her to calm down so she could explain what was going on with her body (granny being a nurse good one to talk to)
but my cuzins mom hadn't bothered to tell her anything

so a good thing to talk about this summer as you never know when it is going to pop in on the girls

I remember when I was young and I started mine at school. I knew what was going on because of school nurse. Our school nurse was very nice and they had the talk with us in 4th grade, but now they wait until 5th grade to talk to the girls. The only thing they do is show them a video and hand out a book then samples. Plus the boys learn about it too and at the same time. I do not like the way that they inform the girls. They act as though it is nothing. I think that their school needs a lesson in how to handle life changing changes. My oldest came home one day when he was in the 5th grade and told me all about it. Then when my second son reached 5th grade I demanded to be there when they had the so called talk. I was a grown adult that knew all about it and I felt embarrassed sitting there with all of the young boys sitting there watching this video. The girls were embarrassed. You could see it on there faces. I definitely want to inform my daughter before she gets into the 5th grade and gets put in that situation. I would like for my daughter to know all that she needs to know and have everything she needs to start. 12|3|That's how I handle it too Carol...|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|13:06:24|06/22/2011|

My girls are 17, 11 and 5. The 11 year old has not had much of a growth spurt and does not seem very close to needing all that much info. I talked to her doctor about it and she agreed that watching for signs of physical maturity is reasonable. In the meantime I have given hints and talked in a general way about what puberty is and that her body will be changing soon.

My older daughter was 11 when we first started talking and she got too much info at once. It scared her a bit, so I won't do that to her sisters. 8|1|See Inside|2goatsandadove|dana@otelco.net|09:23:13|06/22/2011|

My daughter started her period one week after turning 10. We had talked and she was prepared, but it was still a difficult time the first couple of months. We tried all brands of pads and found that Always Infinity seems to be the most absorbent. These are thin and come in three absorbency levels. The pad itself has a different feel to it and doesn't irritate the skin at all. Very expensive! I wrote the company about how pleased I was with their product and they sent me several coupons for free products. She has never had any accidents with this product even through the night sleeping as long as 12 hours. I would try several brands and see what works best for your daughter. I decided cost wasn't an issue as long as my daughter was comfortable and confident. 9|2|TY|kids91911|hodgesamy@ymail.com|09:33:54|06/22/2011|

Thank you for the info. I am really trying to get all the information that I can to get her started. I have found that a lot of girls are going with Always brand because they do not irritate the skin. I had the problem with pads and really do not want her to have to go thru it. Man she is turning 10 in July and I really hope her body gives me time to prepare her. 10|3|I myself use kotex brand pads & ob tampons so when mine reach|pumamomma|pumamomma@yahoo.com|10:01:38|06/22/2011|

that age/stage am sure they will use what I use. I have had mine since age 9 and have TRIED every brand/style. No matter what it is still a pain in the "you know what". Am thinking after 30+ years I should be done with it!!!

Depend on the book, you might want to read it first because it is such a tough subject and you dont want to pre expose them to anything. But we have to talk so they dont be scared. After reading the books answer all the questions. By the way I have 3 daughters and 2 have been through it...

was almost 12 when she started. She took it so well. We were at a resturant and when she got back from the restroom, she just announced rather non-chalant that she started. Very cool and collected. Wow! I was a basketcase when I started so I was quite surprised she was so cool about it.

A few months ago she shocked me that she'd started using the tampons she got with the Being a Girl sample kit. I never used tampons so I was a little surprised she was brave enough. The first few went ok but then she started having trouble getting them positioned right so gave up.

o I don't know if they still offer them, back than she mailed in the form with a money order. They mailed me a boxful of products, tampons(different types & absorbant levels) thin and maxi pads and it came with booklets about how to use the products and hygiene tips. I always use wipes to clean myself after using the bathroom 24/7.

It was a kit with all their different products in them and a little book that talked about what was going to happen. Still love Kotex to this day! I think they still do these!
