We've learned some very basic sign language. Because my dd is situationaly non-verbal and has selective mutism, sign language is a great way to get through to her when she can't get the words out or is overwhelmed. She is a very visual child and sign language (especially when she was smaller) was a huge break trough on getting to her. For some reason she wouldn't respond to our words, like "no" or "stop", however if you signed the words she would 'listen'.

I have a good friend at work who is deaf and has a cochlear (sp?) implant. She taught me a ton during out break times and is such a blessing!

Not sure what you info you are looking for, but if you need something I can help you with, let me know.

8|3|Robin, take it back up or get some Baby Einstein sign language. My DD ( she studied to be an ASL interpreter) and I used ASL with both of my grandsons and it was awesome. My grandsons were able to learn ASL and use it before they started to speak.|Ranalt|ainebailey@gmail.com|12:37:36|05/30/2011|

We used it for the first two years of their life and it was such a blessing.

No hearing problems here, but my oldest DD lived in a dorm for the Deaf at RIT in college and like I said previously, my youngest DD studied with a Gallaudet Professer while at RIT to learn ASL interpreting.
I learned some basics from both of them and over the years it has come in handy.

I know a couple of moms who started out teaching their children sign language first, and it actually delayed their speaking skills. I wonder if there have been any studys on how it affects speach.

10|5|My grandsons were both early speakers and they both always had huge vocabularies for their ages. Don't know if it was due to the sign language or all the books we read them or what. |Ranalt|ainebailey@gmail.com|13:13:31|05/30/2011|
