my biggest issue is bunnies. I fence off the things they like the best, but yesterday they got at my marigolds. When my kids were little, I would look outside early in the morning, and if I saw bunnies I would wake them and say bunny run, and pay them a quarter to chase them off. If they lived at home now I would have to pay them much more now to get up at 5 am. lol.

we won't expect to pick until at least early July. We doubled our garden this year. We have lots of tomatoes, lots of peppers (hot and sweet), sugar snap peas, green beans, 3 kinds of eggplant, and lots of squash (yellow and zucchini). In my backyard, I have these that come up on their own: chives (already clipped some since I was out of green onions), mint (used in a recipe for Armenian beef kabobs -- yum kinda' like a flavorful burger on a stick!), and strawberries (these are not ready to pick yet)....

We planted them last year...harvested twice...threw the plant tops in an empty bed that we were going to use for compost and the rooted and produced another batch around Christmas....and guess what is ready for another harvest AGAIN?....this all started from six small plants and we have gotten at least three dozen sweet potatoes so far....I used this as a tithe/offering analogy for the kids..... 8|2|Sweet potatoes sound so good....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|14:40:18|05/24/2011|

Well, got an early start at gardening this year cuz my husband retired so he was able to help me clear my garden plots BUT I got TOO excited and jumped the gun. I planted too early and much of it didn't come up.. Now I am having to go over it all again and re-plant a lot of it. I started a lot from seed and so am very behind in growth:( I'm having a hard time keeping up with it all and now, I am having to gardening with only one hand!:( The dr. calls it a "trigger finger" in that my thumb won't bend and if I try and bend it, the joint locks up and its very painful. I am having surgery to move the ligaments on June 1 and I hope that eventually i'll be able to pull weeds again. I have loads of radishes but they are HOT and so am just leaving them for the bugs rather then the bugs going to my other plants.. I will have squash soon but everything else is still piddly.
QUIETWATERS, if you need to re=plant your Marigolds, I can send you some seeds.. just email me and i'll ROAK them to you.. I collected LOADS of seeds in the summer of 2009. They are still good as I planted some and they are up.

I gardened all thru 6 months of chemo without a hitch...one year I hurt my back and couldn't finish the growing year, one year it was carpel tunnel or tendinitis... but my thumb? Now THAT'S a different story!!! I can't even crack an egg with this thing or change the toilet roll let alone pull up a measly weed.. :( grrrr!

My tomatoes were planted a little early and we had a bunch of rain, so I have two tiny tomato plants hanging on. We'll see how they do, but I suspect I will need to replant. I also planted several types of lettuce, cucumbers, radishes, and sunflowers (all seeds) and they are thriving here. Nothing close to picking yet, but our planting season for most is late April and I held off until early May. This is my first garden and I am so excited to watch them all grow.

In my greenhouse boxes I have some daisy flowers about ready to plant, a bunch of cauliflower that is ready and cantaloupe that is almost ready to go into the ground. And I have a big envelope full of other seeds that I need to start working on. Our backyard is full of all sorts of herbs, many of which I can't even identify (haven't worked all that hard at it yet). I do know i have a lot of dill, parsley and I think mint. Oh and there was another one, not oregano, but an italian spice that Dh knew of. That back yard of ours is the best I have ever had. We lived in Apartments for the last 13 years, so really it's the only one I've had, but it is a pretty amazing space. The previous tenants had serious green thumbs, so we lucked out!

No bunnies here Carol, just deer, deer and a blue jay who thinks he owns the place and neighborhood cats (and our two cats). The jay is so funny-- he waits in the trees and watches for me to come out. If I am digging around he waits for me to back off and then he goes at the dirt collecting any worms/bugs that I have unearthed for him. He isn't scared of much.

I was thinking of you when we pulled most of the blackberries out to make room for sunflowers. LOL. I remember you were trying to grow some and here I was with more than I can handle. Most of our parks and the nature trail between our city and the next town over is full of blackberry bushes so we have all we can pick for free. It is one of the perks of living in Oregon. I wish I had marionberries. They are really delicious. I may look into growing some of those.

I also need to plant carrots. Forgot all about them until now.

I hope your garden makes good. I hated when we lived where I could not garden. Do the deer eat up your yard?

Funny about the black berries. I remember that is how it was at my grandparents house in Arkansas, they were every where. I have never heard of marion berries. I have five blackberry bushes, (my friend brought me from Alabama,) that made it, and one blueberry. I have tons of the raspberries that produce very big berries and strawberries. I love having stuff that just comes back on its own.
