You can't see if when it reads DND if it starts W~5 or 9.

As I understand it, the new, extended barcode also contains regional info - so may/will reject your coupon if not used in the original distribution region. Also enough bars in these extended barcodes to enforce all limits on the number of coupons to be used, as well as day of expiration (instead of just month of expiration), etc.
Saw the June transition date mentioned in one of the comments. Actually, that date was supposed to start on Jan 1, 2010, so I'm surprised the older barcodes still work at my stores. 7|2|So far...that is the manufacturer wishlist. They WANT the regions coded. But that would be a legal nightmare for them. As it is now...if you can get the better value you can use it. If they restrict a region from being able to use a "better" value they are discriminating. Why should people in Fla get $1/1 and people in IL get .50/1 and be held by the coding not to use the $1/1 if they can get them. ...saying the mftr's use of different value coupons or restricting locations is discriminating is...exactly correct. The mftr is trying to target a particular consumer who isn't buying enough of its product. But this isn't illegal. If it chooses not to give your area ANY coupon, that's discriminati...errr...marketing 101. Nothing illegal or even unethical - just capitalism.
FWIW, I love the current situation where one can interpret barcodes and trade for great coupons that aren't in my area. So I rue the day that it all comes crashing down.
To close on an optimistic note: as long as there are clueless (or friendly) checkers willing to override, we still have a chance at bargains and reasonable stockpiles.

I like the way things are now at this and other boards: we can trade coupons and amass reasonable stockpiles.
I think that extreme-couponing show is hastening the demise of trading boards like ours by showcasing the worst aspects of couponing.

The Manufacturers should worry more about meeting there sales and profit margins, instead of harassing everybody that uses coupons to save money on their weekly grocery bills. This entire Regional coupons thing is so STUPID. You have a coupon that says, save $1.00 from a newspaper you bought in a different region of this country and when you use this same coupon in your area, they will not accept it. Oh come on, give me a break. Just make ALL the Sunday's Newspapers with the same coupons, NOT with different coupon savings for Regional areas.
