I've been pondering this question for a few wks. now, ever since I ran into one of my former friends. I hadn't seen her in quite awhile but was aware that she dabbled in pot, cocaine, crack & even graduated to meth. :( When I seen her this last time, the complexion of her face was awful! It was blotchy red & full of what looked like a bad case of acne altho she's way beyond the normal teenage acne. I know this is likely due to the meth. :(
Then I find out about 2 kids that are my son's age - 1 is currently in rehab for a heroin addiction & the other just got busted a few wks. ago for having meth & crack labs. He was also charged w/a felon in possession of a firearm. NOT even 20 yrs. old & he's already a convicted felon?
I just don't get it. Is is insecurity, peer pressure, lack of love or ? These people use battery acid, ammonia, drain cleaner & Lord only knows what else to make this crap called methamphetamine (sp?), & people are actually ingesting this stuff that slowly eats away at you, from the inside out. My God, who would want to ingest battery acid or drain cleaner???!!!
But what on earth is so sorely lacking in these people's lives that would make them want to take something so dangerous, things that not only mess w/your brain but eat you alive, just for a few minutes/hours of a high?!

Anything to numb the hurt, I guess. But then you can I see and understand that using just creates more pain, so that is a pretty vicious cycle.

And I think it's the very root of the problem! Drug dealers are actually not the root of the problem like many believe, no more than a car dealer; it's the people using & whatever it is in their lives that they feel is so bad they want to numb it or block it out. A dealer can be hauled off to jail/prison yet a person using will merely find another supplier for whatever it is they need.
Education on the dangers of illegal drugs certainly doesn't seem to be helping much & if anything, is just making people more creative in making even more dangerous crap. For a long time I've felt that the solution is not education or putting more people in jail/prison, but to get to the users & to get down to the nitty gritty of whatever pain & turmoil it is they're going thru. They may get treated for addiction/use but is the underlying cause of that addiction/use being treated? Are they being helped to better deal w/life in general? When they get help to deal with & overcome that pain, they're less likely going to feel the need to "self-medicate". I think that alone would greatly reduce the illegal drug business.

This family member does crack and drinks heavily...for them their addiction is caused from low self esteem, not a strong person and cannot handle life, also suffers from emotional issues and cannot get past it and move forward. For me I don't get it, never had a addiction problem and never dabbled in drugs or drank in access but I feel I am a strong person, I have been down some rocky roads...My entire life(poverty, physical & mental abuse) and I came out okay,I learned to forgive and move on with my life...For some I guess they just cannot handle all life brings.

I have no idea if it is in the genes or what, but like alcoholism, they say it can run in families. I think that there must be something that makes someone more likely to be addicted. I am sure alot of things make people do drugs, but what makes one person become addicted when the other person can stop, I have no idea. Good question though.

I saw someone recently at the place I volunteer at and she looked very similar to what you are describing and she had alot of grey teeth as well and she is 32. I did not know what to say except hello and asked how she was doing. I went thought alot as well but rather just not think about it and do not drink or do drugs to make myself feel better for that moment. It all depends on the choices you make when you know you can become addicted to simple things up to big things. You have to choose to not enter the environment first including the people not just the places. Then you have to be strong enough to not make the choice if you do go in the danger zone to not participate. Whatever the object of desire is you do not know how far you will go if you have this personality. There is no just one this or that. The more you get the more you want. Happy as hell with the high, guilty feeling knowing you shouldn't have so feel bummed and do it some more! It can really suck you in. Some people have an empty thing to feel, others do it for personal sabotage or to hurt someone else. It could be a control thing like an eating disorder. You know everything else is crazy but you need this one thing to control rather than dealing with the real thing. I have an addictive personality and both my parents did. My dad was drinking, smoking and gambling and my mom was gambling, shopping and coupons. I have trouble stopping shopping and coupons, diet pepsi and food (candy/sweets) and a few other minor things. You know you are in trouble. You want to stop but can't. You have your triggers or empty spots or feeling of lack of control whatever the deal may be. Avoiding the triggers, the availability/environment/people is the most important. They say never get too hungry, sad or tired if you have an addiction. Mine is more dangerous when I have too much energy for the shopping part but right on for the food! I have not touched liquor and will not gamble-not even a church ticket because I do not want to get sucked into what is the worst for me. All of thee types of addictions can ruin life, family, etc. This may not compare to drugs but it doesn't have to be drugs if you have an addictive personality. The potential is always lurking. The fear of the big dangers just has to be there to stop you. No fear means destruction. My ex and I had to move away to get rid of his druggie brother that leached onto us because noone else would help him anymore. He stole us dry, wrecked my car and truck, was pure hell to live with. You worry when they are gone just to be in hell when they show back up. what ever the problem it was always some one else's fault. money went for drugs before it went for groceries. i never understood that world. still don't. you can become addicted to anything. i had a friend who was a compulsive fabric hound. she had so much she did not know what she had. was always going to make such pretty quilts but never got anything done.
some people like the "high" they get but when the euphoria goes away and they crash they can't handle life. does it run in families? yes- like many other diseases. can you cure it- no---- but you can learn to control it if you want to.
