Look for obviously live bed bugs in the mattress seams and behind picture frames and in the head board. They like cracks and crevices tight spaces. Sometimes you have to pull the dust cover off the box spring and look in there. They are small, rusty red in color, and fairly flat about the size of a dog tick if they are an adult. You will also find cast skins where they shed their skins.
They are extremely hard to get rid of. There are over the counter sprays you can get to try to get rid of them, but we don't know how effective they are. You can use a steam iron to iron your entire mattress and the steam will kill them. One treatment will not typically get rid of them. It can take two to five or more you just have to keep at it until they are gone.
PS adding that DH has been in pest control now for 9 years which is where I got my information. I knew some of it but then called him to see what he's learned recently. They are constantly being taught about these as they are getting so bad in so many areas.
