I scrubbed it really good with bleach water, than rinsed it let it dry and than we painted the window and window sill with outdoor paint(as that holds up to water)it has worked well and no more mildew

2|2|Linda's right...you can clean it away, but it will come back if the window isnt sealed well in the frame....use some caulk or paint to 'reseal' the wood up to the glass....we had that problem too.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|18:08:42|04/01/2011|

3|3|I did not know we had a little issue til after an appraiser came over he was doing all the houses in the area, and because my waterheater is behind a door in the basement it has a little mildew on it so we keep it open as much as we can and bleach it daily.|sarahjones|beautiful1000000@gmail.com|18:23:01|04/01/2011|

Sarah S. Jones 5|1|Besides what's been suggested here so far, you can also try using a de-humidifier.(m)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|18:44:59|04/01/2011|

The de-humidifier will help reduce the humidity level & thus the moisture. Turning an exhaust fan (like one on a range hood or if one in bathroom) & letting it run for a couple hrs. or so a few times a day will also help, particularly when boiling water, bathing/showering.
Opening windows for a bit on non-humid days also helps for air circulation & reducing moisture levels.
You want your humidity level to be no less than 50-55% in winter & no more than 60% in summer.
HTH. :)

we run it anytime we see the windows fogging up or if you are cooking alot. It has made a big difference with a problem we were having.

8|2|They are expensive, but they are well worth it....we have one in our finished basement, had for at least 10 yrs, and still going strong :) It keeps the basement free from humidity, mold, mildew, odors....so much cheaper than replacing carpet or repairing mold/mildew damage to other surfaces :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|11:23:47|04/02/2011|

9|2|There are table-top ones that aren't as expensive as the ones that set on the floor. (m)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|11:46:18|04/02/2011|

And some can also be heavy (the floor models) so hopefully you will have someone to help you get it set up when you get one.
Maybe you can find a good used one at a garage sale or 2nd hand shop. You could maybe even find one really cheap or free on Craigslist or FreeCycle. Alot of people give them away or sell them cheap if they're heavy. I got my floor model at a garage sale for $10 & it's still been working like a charm for me for about 6 yrs. now - I have mine in my basement sitting right next to the floor drain.
Just make sure to regularly clean the filter on it & it should serve its purpose for you for many years. :)
